Nutrition Diary Thread for Pregnant Ladies

Who needs some accountability?

I do!

I'm going to start posting my food log here to keep myself on track. I might even add pictures if I am feeling extra motivated.

Some of other pregnant Whole30/Paleo could also use accountability and motivation. If you want to join in just post a little intro and start posting once a day with your nutrition intake and anything else you'd like to share.

PS. It's okay to discuss mistakes here. Yesterday I had a gluten free brownie AND some mint chocolate. I really want to get back to treats being berries with coconut milk.

A bit about me: 34, soon to be 35, Canadian living in the UK, second time mom, due in January. I have dabbled in Paleo for a few years now and completed three whole30s (last one was weeks 18-22 of this pregnancy). Since my last Whole30 ended I've been eating okay meals but indulging in sweets at snacks and had a few big nutrition off road days.

So glad I googled Whole 30 and pregnant this morning to find your posts!

I'm 39 and pregnant with my second. Due May 10, 2013 so I am 13 weeks pregnant. I am dairy and gluten intolerant and have done a lot of primal/paleo eating and one Whole 30 prior to pregnancy. We are just finishing our candy infested celebration of Halloween. I need some serious accountability!! And my first trimester was not great to begin with as far as primal or Whole 30. I'm not sure why but I just thought I needed more carbs which was a slippery slope to gluten free brownies and whatever candy I wanted anytime. WHOA!!! I was also doing a lot of trail running and lifting weights when I got pregnant and had a lot of cramping and pain early on so I stopped exercising for the most part. I think the combo of poor food and lack of exercise made me a bit wrong in the head (anxious/depressed) and more tired than usual in the first trimester. SO! Today is a new day!!!

Yoga

1 x tabata (4min) on the nordic trainer

1 clementine

(more to come!)

I had three runny eggs and a bunch of spinach and onions for breakfast. Super yum, after being a vegetarian that didn't like eggs for most of my life I'm realizing what deliciousness I've missed out on for so long. Then I had to head to town for most of the day, and I didn't pack any food for some dumb reason. I did bring my coffee cup with 1/2 cup of coconut milk in it as I had to stop by the local fair trade coffee shop to pick up some coffee beans and they throw in a cup of coffee, so that sustained me through the day. I went to Crossfit at noon and had a good workout, squatted 125 and pressed 75. Shame on me for not bringing a post workout snack, but actually I felt fine and made it til I got home at 5. I chopped up a leftover pork cutlet for supper and put it on a huge pile of baby greens. I'll probably have to eat again, but have nothing cooked and I'm tired now so I'm not sure what... Oh and this is the recipe I used for the pork cutlets, it was quite good :)http://www.paleolith...tlety-schabowe/

I ended up having a 1/2 cup of coconut milk on top of a banana, a handful of blueberries, and a small handful of pecans for a late snack.

My stove/oven died a few days ago, making it very hard to cook what I want. And I keep procrastinating on getting a repair man as I'm afraid it's going to be costly. Thankfully I have an electric griddle, so we've been eating lots of eggs, sausage, and hamburger. If anyone has any good ideas for cooking on a griddle please let me know! I picked up some 1/2 price short dated ground chicken at Aldi's and have been making lots of burgers, I saute up a bunch of onions, garlic, shredded carrots, bell peppers, and mushrooms, put them through a food processor (so the kids won't flip), and mix that with the chicken. It makes for super moist and tasty burgers, especially topped with guacamole, tomatoes, and onions. I'm starting to sabotage myself with dried fruit and nuts again, same thing that happened last time... Ugh, I'm going to try to eat super clean today, but that means finding plenty of good food to eat so I don't get hungry for the sweet stuff. I did borrow my mom's Presto cooker, it works great to heat water for coffee! I'm thinking I could make some soup with it, maybe I'll get on that today. How's everyone else doing?

Oh, and on another note, I got to shoot two raccoons the last two nights that were in trying to get my chickens, I didn't prepare them for eating though, I should have done that, might have been interesting :) But the chickens will eat them, poetic justice :)

I want to join in on this. I've been out of town and then sick for the past week but I'm finally fed up enough that I HAVE to get back on track. I'll be 18 weeks tomorrow due April 12th. Once I get my house fully stocked again and my head on straight, I will definitely come here for accountability.

HI. I´m 28 weeks pregnant and I did a WHOLE30 last year before getting pregnant, my husband was really supportive at that time with me doing a WHOLE30 although he made it clear he would not join me he was always there when I needed the support to keep on track. However when we found out we were pregnant I was really disappointed that my doctor told us that it would NOT BE OK for me to do a whole30 because according to her it was A DIET that was ¨TOO STRICT¨ She said I would really have to intake dairy and lots of whole grains, and she said I was in my apropriate weight so I should just eat what a bit of everything and even give in to cravings, I was very disappointed and tried to convince her but was very unsuccessful.

I never thought not having the WHOLE30 rules to lean on would harm me this much, currently I feel like I have lost control over my body and eating habits I am eating really bad, I hardly get enough veggies in and I have ENORMOUS SUGAR CRAVINGS that I have given in to over and over and find myself eating an incredible amount of sugar infested treats lots of times a day, what is hardest for me is that my doctor has convinced my husband that whole30 eating is bad during pregnancy because accordig to her DAIRY AND GRAINS ARE EXTREMELY NESESARY AND SWEETS ARE OK and I think its REALLY BAD THAT I´M NOT EATING WHOLE30. So now I´m really stressed that I can´t get my husband to support me, but I´m decided to do a WHOLE30 and I´m hoping I can come here for the support I need, I think the bigest problem is the the idea that pregnant women NEED DAIRY AND GRAINS don´t get me wrong I LOVE MILK AND YOGURT but I felt so good a year ago when I was on WHOLE30 and I really want that feeling back, plus I don´t see how lots of veggies and less sugar will do my baby bad. I think that the problem with my obstetrician, my doctor and my nutritionist is the whole cultural idea that its ok to always give in to cravings when you are pregnant, specially since I currently live in Mexico it´s really hard to see people actually grasp to the ideals that WHOLE30 teaches, in a culture where everyone´s diet is mostly grains and dairy. To most of the people around me it seems soo taboo that I want to eat this way, and it´s hard to get any doctor to agree with me here. I think it´s more important that I listen to my body, at this point I have nosebleeds almost daily, huge headaches, a month ago I had a horrible unexplained rash cover my body, something that never happened before and when I did the WHOLE30 last year before being pregnant, my headaches went away so I´m looking forward to trying another WHOLE30 to see if my nosebleeds stop and if my headaches diminish. Plus the only reason I am doing this against my doctor´s orders is that she was not able to give me any real reason why I shouldn´t exept: YOUR PREGNANT TAKE IT EASY ITS NO TIME TO DIET, but to me its not a diet, I´m not doing it to loose weight or anything like that I just need to feel better and I think this is a healthy way to do it, I WILL TRY THIS FOR A WEEK STARTING SUNDAY and see if I see improvements I hope I can come here for support and to talk about my progress or struggles with this, THANKS!

You can do it!!! There's lot of us pregnant ladies doing Whole 30, it's the perfect thing for your body and your baby, I just wish I'd known this in my previous three carb and sugar infested sick pregnancies. I had a week between my first attempt and this one, and I binged on sugar badly and ate plenty of stuff I shouldn't, I felt horrible every single evening, crampy stomach, gas, bowel issues... It's just not worth it, I have no self control when it comes to food, especially when pregnant, and Whole 30 is the perfect way to keep me reined in and focused on putting nutrients into my body, not calories. I don't have a Dr, which helps, all of my babies have been born at home. I'd just not tell your Dr, most of them don't seem to care what you eat, and if she mentions it, just say that you've been eating lots of healthy foods. Since when do Dr's really care about you anyway? It seems most of them just want you in and out as fast as possible and don't even listen 90% of the time. And don't say anything to your husband either, just eat the way that makes you feel the best, and when you feel so much better that you're able to give him special attention in the evenings instead of lying on the couch groaning in pain, maybe he'll figure it out :)

THANK YOU! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO HEAR. AND YOU ARE SO RIGHT I THINK THE BEST WAY IS TO JUST DO IT AND LET MY BODY SPEAK FOR ITSELF, AND THAT´S GREAT CONGRATS ON HAVING YOUR BABIES BORN AT HOME I THINK ITS A GREAT IDEA SINCE THIS IS MY FIRST PREGNANCY I´M STILL A BIT SCARED TO DO THAT BUT MAYBE I WILL NEXT TIME. BY THE WAY WHAT DO YOU DO ABOUT CALCIUM? SINCE I WON´T BE EATING ANY DAIRY IS SHOULD I BUY A CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT?

THANKS!!

BY THE WAY I READ IN YOUR FIRST POST ABOUT YOUR CROSSFIT TRAINING, I HAVE QUESTION...ARE YOU CURRENTLY PREGNANT AND HOW MANY WEEKS ARE YOU? BECAUSE I WAS ALSO TOLD TO STOP TRAINING EXEPT FOR EASY CARDIO AND YOGA AND I WOULD LOVE TO KEEP DOING AT LEAST SOOOMEE WEIGHT TRAINING AND I JUST WANT TO KNOW YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH IT... DO YOU KEEP WEIGHT TRAINING WHILE PREGNANT? HOW DO YOU FEEL HAVE YOU HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT?

THANK YOU

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm 33 weeks pregnant, I've been lifting throughout the pregnancy, pregnancy is not a disease, you don't instantly become weak and helpless the moment you become pregnant :) I did squats around 130#, and deadlifts around 150 no problem. I've slacked off the last few weeks just because I've not been able to get anyone to watch my kids while I go to the gym, and now my hips are starting to loosen up and give me pain, I don't want to overdo it. Don't worry about calcium, I heard on a podcast recently, Paleo Diet and Lifestyle, that "if you say that we have to have dairy to get calcium, that means we're cow parasites and can't live without them" :) Calcium is in abundance in greens and vegetables.

So how's everyone else doing? I took a week off for Thanksgiving, and restarted today. I made EP's Meatloaf, it's sooooo dang good! http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1770108 This morning I went to the grocery store and bought all their marked down, close to outdate meats, so at least I'm stocked up on that. I'm also planning to take my stupid bull to the butcher Sunday, then I'll be loaded with beef, woohoo!!! I made rules for this time, no dried fruit, no nut butters, and no frozen banana treats. I've got to stop the sugar addiction, whenever I'm not eating Whole 30 I binge uncontrollably on sweets. I'm thinking that if I could actually stick out 30 or 45 days, maybe my brain would reset and I wouldn't have this addiction. Oh well, update me on how the rest of you are doing, encourage me :)

THATS GREAT, THAT YOU STILL WORK OUT AND DON´T LET PEOPLE TREAT YOU LIKE YOU´R SICK THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I THINK ALOT OF PERSONS SHOULD STOP DOING!! MOST PEOPLE FIND OUT YOUR PREGNANT AND INSTANTLY TRY TO TREAT YOU LIKE YOU ARE SICK...¨DON´T DO THIS, DON´T DO THAT, EAT LOTS OF THIS EAT LOTS OF THAT¨

JUST FOR THE SAKE OF LETTING OUT MY FRUSTRATION I MUST SHARE SOMETHING HORRIBLE THAT HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY:

I WENT TO THE SOCIAL MEDICAL CLINIC FOR THE CHECK UP (here in Mexico THE SOCIAL MEDICAL CLINIC ALSO KNOWN AS; IMSS its the free healthcare that workers get and I have to attened inorder for my husband to get a few days of from work when the baby is born, but the service is for the most part TERRIBLE, so I have to go even though I have a private obstetrician who works with a midwife whom I see regularly and obviously I had to find her on my own and we do pay for these services) SO I WALK TO THE CLINIC AND THE NURSE HAD TO GIVE US THIS ¨BREASTFEEDING NUTRITION TALK AND PLANNING PARENTHOOD ADVICE¨ AND SHE WAS ALL LIKE: EAT LOTS OATMEAL AND CORN TORTILLAS AND YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY EAT BEANS, AND THEN MY HUSBAND SHOOTS ME THIS LOOK LIKE: SEE AND YOU DON´T WANT TO EAT CORN STUFF OR GRAINS THE NURSE HEARD HIM AND SHE TRIED TO CONVINCE ME TELLING ME...¨IF YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO BREASTFEED WHEN YOUR BABY IS BORN YOU HAVE TO EAT WELL YOU CAN´T AVOID FOOD YOU DON´T LIKE AND THEN SHE ADDED....¨ OR WE CAN JUST GIVE YOU VITAMIN SHOTS AND LOTS OF THEM¨ TREATING ME LIKE A 5 YEAR OLD I WAS SOOO ANGRY I FELT LIKE THROWING THE BOOK ¨IT STARTS WITH FOOD¨ IN HER FACE BUT SHE WOULDN´T HAVE UNDERSTOOD IT SINCE THEY DON´T HAVE A SPANISH VERSION AND I LIVE IN MEXICO( I REALLY THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE A WHOLE30 SITE AND BOOK IN SPANISH, PEOPLE HERE REALLY NEED TO KNOW THIS STUFF).

OOH AND IF THAT WASN´T ENOUGH SHE WAS SOO VULGAR IN THE WAY SHE TALKED I MEAN SHE TREATED US LIKE WE WERE COMPLETELY IGNORANT SINCE THIS IS GOING TO BE OUR FIRST BABY AND SHE PRACTICALLY WANTED TO FORCE ME TO SIGN A FORM THAT SAID THEY WERE ALLOWED TO PUT A IUD THE COPPER THING AFTER MY BABY IS BORN. OBVIOUSLY I DIDN´T TELL HER I DON´T PLAN ON HAVING MY BABY AT THAT HOSPITAL, HELL!! WHY WOULD I WANT SOMETHING LIKE THAT STUCK INSIDE ME, SHE WAS LIKE: OOH YOU ARE SO YOUNG YOU SHOULD REALLY WORRY ABOUT TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF OR YOU MIGHT END UP PREGNANT AGAIN TOO SOON, ¨YOU SHOULD WAIT ATLEAST 5 YEARS BEFORE HAVING ANOTHER CHILD BECAUSE YOU DON´T WANT TO WASTE ALL YOUR YOUTH JUST YET¨ I am just sooo shocked to hear actual medical ¨professionals¨ talk like that, I KNOW that the norm is usually 2 years if you have a natural birth and she was trying to scare me into waiting to have another pregnancy till atleast 5years ...

. SHE DIDN´T EVEN ASK IF WE ALREADY HAD PLANS ON WHO MANY CHILDREN WE WANTED OR WHEN SHE JUST FELT SHE HAD THE GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO BUTT IN AND TELL US WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT JUST BECAUSE IT´S OUR FIRST TIME PREGNANT. ME AND MY HUSBAND DIDN´T EVEN BOTHER EXPLAINING THAT WE PLANNED ALL OF THIS SINCE BEFORE WE GOT MARRIED 2 YEARS AGO AND WE HAVE VERY CONCRETE PLANS FOR OUR FAMILY AND THE FACT THAT I AM 20 YEARS OLD DOES NOT MAKE ME IGNORANT, I HAVE READ PLENTY AND AM VERY INFORMED IN WHAT I WANT AND WHY AND I HATE HOW SHE DISCRIMINATED ME AND TREATED ME LIKE I WAS COMPLETELY IGNORANT, because ¨I WAS SO YOUNG¨ according to her.....I AM SOOO ANGRY AND SPECIALLY BECAUSE THIS IS THE GENERAL MENTALITY IN MEXICO , ANYWAYS I WALKED OUT OF THERE SO MAD I TOLD MY HUSBAND I´M NOT GOING BACK AND HE AGREED THE LADY WAS WAYY OUT OF LINE, BUT HE STILL IS KIND OF AGREEING I SHOULD EAT CORN AND OATMEAL AND I´M NOT EVEN GONNA ARGUE WITH HIM, I´M JUST GOING TO LET THE FOOD TALK FOR ITSELF, VEGGIES AND GOOD FAT AND PROTEIN SHOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD UP A HEALTY ARGUMENT ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT ME NEEDING TO JUSTIFY THEM.

so bottom line..MARIE SHIPP YOU ARE MY HERO I TOTALLY AGREE PREGNANCY IS NOOOOT A DISEASE AND SERIOUSLY I WISH YOU THE BEST ON CUTTING OUT THE BANANA TREATS, DRIED FRUIT AND NUT BUTTERS I THINK I SHOULD DO THE SAME BUT MAYBE I´LL WAIT TILL AFTER I HAVE THE BABY TO ALSO CONSIDER QUITTING DRIED FRUIT SINCE I DO ENJOY IT QUITE A BIT AT THIS POINT BUT I DON´T FEEL I OVER DO IT... ANYWAYS WAY TO GO SPECIALLY ON THE WORKOUT SIDE SINCE I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE DISCOURAGE LIFTING WHILE PREGNANT...I STOPPED GOING TO THE GYM WHEN EVERYONE IN THE GYM JUST STOPPED AND STARED AT ME BECAUSE THEY SAW I WAS PREGNANT AND WORKING OUT AND THEN THEY MADE RUDE COMMENTS LIKE:..¨DOES SHE NOT REALIZE, SHE IS PREGNANT?¨ ...AND I WASN´T EVEN LIFTING JUST DOING A WARM-UP CALM ROUTINE, I DON´T KNOW IF YOU EVER HAD TO DEAL WITH STUFF LIKE THAT BUT I´D LIKE TO KNOW IT BECAUSE I DON´T KNOW IF ITS JUST PEOPLE IN GENERAL OR JUST THE CULTURE HERE, ANYWAYS GOOD LUCK!! HOPE TO HEAR HOW YOU DO DOING YOU ¨STRICTER WHOLE30 OR WHOLE45¨
