Lauren Furia Stanfa
I am doing my first whole 30 and three days into it I started having sore/chapped/swollen lips. At first I thought I was either having my first cold sore or just a really bad case of chapped lips. As it moved into my mouth I still tought cold sores, but then it moved to my skin by the end of week one. At this point i figured I was allergic to something I was eating, so i cut out what i thought were the two possible culprits. However, even after I stopped eating them the mouth did get better but the body rash got worse. WEnt to the doctor yesterday and has to get a steroid injection and i am taking antihitimines for the insanely itchy rash. I am determined to finish out this whole 30, but the doctor said i shouldnt see an allergist for testing till everything subsides or another option is waiting a month an have a food allergy blood panel done. I have listed the foods that are either new to my diet or increase on a regular basis. Anyone have any helpful experience with food allergies? I know some foods have cross sensitivity where if you're allergic to one youre more likely to be allergic to the other. So ironic I try to be healthy and my body reacts badly lol Coconut oil/milk (new to diet stopped eating when lips got swollen) Cashews (increased stopped eating when lips got swollen and replaces with macadamia nuts) Sweet potatoes (increased stopped wating when lips got swollen) Avacado (increased but never took out of diet till yesterday) olive oil i think coconut and avacado are closely related
Keri W.
I can tell you that avocado is a common allergen. It is closely tied to latex and many medical pros that have had prolonged latex exposure, will develop this allergy. There are quite a few other foods that are tied to this and there is a great deal of info to be found on the internet. It sounds like you're doing the right thing by eliminating the foods that are new to your diet. Allergies are such strange things. As a child you may not have had issues but as we get older, things change. On a positive note...it is good to discover these allergies now while they are not in a life threatening stage. You are now aware that you have an issue. Watch out for cosmetics, lotions, etc that may also carry the things you are allergic to. Congrats on your choice to be healthy...and don't feel negatively towards this. It is a blessing in disguise to discover your allergies. I hope you're feeling better soon! Best wishes! Tasha
Cashews are also highly allergenic.
jennycash
i know several people have discovered an allergy to coconut. maybe eliminate all of these items for a week or more until symptoms are gone and then introduce one at a time, giving 2-3 days in between each exposure, until you find the culprit. no fun! as a side note, my son has gotten hives/swelling from an unknown food-related allergy. his allergy specialist said Zyrtec does a better job with the symptoms and makes you less drowsy than Benadryl or other antihistamines. hope you feel better soon. Petra
I have had 3 cold sores during my Whole30, but before that didn't have them for a year or so! Strange...don't know what triggers them
melbournegirl
Cold sores are from a dormant virus. Changing your diet dramatically does place both physical and mental stress on you and requires quite a lot of resetting of complex mechanisms so I would guess its not uncommon to stir up these problems. Sad for you though of course!
Terry K
I am very allergic to cashews - react as if I have poison ivy - it's bad. Developed a peanut allergy about 8 years ago, and other nuts are also stirring things up. Have you ever had food allergies before? Hoping that the steroid shot helps soon!b Allergic reactions are no fun and outside of being uncomfortable, they can be downright dangerous. Smarsh79
I am on day 26of my Whole 30.Everyday I wake up with a flatter stomach but I have a fuzzy head and a headache!!?? I told my sister I always feel hungover in the morning and I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol . She suggested I may be allergic to something I am eating more of on this diet. She thinks it could be the vinegar !!! I had some on my coleslaw yesterday and on my salad last night and I just woke up with a wicked headache! I am going to cut it out today and see if my symptoms improve. Anyone else have a similar experience?
jmcbn
Hey @Smarsh79 & welcome to the forums... Sorry to hear you're suffering from headaches/that 'hangover' feeling. Can you give us a run down of what you have eaten over say the past 3-4 days? That way we'll be better equipped to help you troubleshoot... Hookem07
I know this is an old thread, but the OP is very similar to what I'm experiencing, so I'm hoping it's okay to jump on here instead of starting a new topic. I'm on day 23 of my first Whole30 and I've been having itchy rash patches in front of my armpits and burning/chapped/slightly swollen lips out of nowhere since last week. I've never had food allergies before, or any allergies really, so I'm having a bit of panic at the thought of never being able to eat the mystery offender/s again. All of the foods I'm eating now are foods I've eaten regularly prior to Whole30, but there are definitely some that I've increased quite a bit - including some "usual suspects" for food allergies like eggs and tree nuts. I'm going to try cutting out nuts to see if that helps (*sobs*), but is this a normal thing? I'm almost wishing I'd never started this if it means dealing with allergies the rest of my life now. Hookem07
So just an update for anyone who may be searching for this topic in the future. I cut out tree nuts for several days and my symptoms subsided, so it looks like I guessed correctly. I've been able to successfully add back in almond milk for my coffee without the rash/lip stuff flaring back up, so it looks like whatever allergy I have to nuts is not extreme and I'm attributing the reaction to a significant increase in both amount and frequency of tree nut consumption while on Whole30. I wasn't eating tons of nuts, but I was having almond milk in my coffee, almond butter on apple slices most days (I'm breastfeeding and therefore allowing myself snacks!), the occasional handful of cashews, nut milks and flours in cooking, etc. So, go easy on the nuts folks!
