Karin Cournoyer
So, I went out on Friday night and had about 4 shots of tequila over the course of the night. Of course, it hit me pretty hard b/c it was the first alcohol I had in over 35 days. I think I have a bigger problem, though. A few years ago, I had a lot of stomach issues and after having an endoscopy, I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia and gastritis. Well, after drinking Friday night, my gastritis symptoms are back. My stomach STILL hurts and I am in pain. I really had no clue that alcohol could have this effect on me! I am really a pretty light drinker outside of Whole30. I would say I average 2-3 drinks/month? Not too much. If I go out for the evening (not very often) I will have a few drinks, but never to the point of making myself sick or anything. On Saturday, I couldn't even stand up straight b/c my stomach hurt so badly. Anyone have a similar experience? Was it just too much too soon?? Help! melbournegirl
I can never drink four drinks in one night and not feel sick in the stomach!
eims13
I finished whole 30 yesterday and have a staff dinner today. With free drink. I'm a little scared but think I will have a few glasses of red wine as my first re introduction... I think they will hit me pretty quick-which could be messy in front of bosses!! Is red wine the best to drink on paleo? Or has any1 Any other suggestions?
Lisa K.
I don't think any alcohol is considered the best to drink. I think it's like the Hartwig's sugar=sugar=sugar. Alcohol=alcohol=alcohol. There is no nutritional value to it any way you slice it. I wouldn't overdo it on the wine or any other alcoholic beverage because you don't know how your body is going to react right after and the next day. Best of luck to you! TrayS
After not having any alcohol for four weeks I found the first glass of wine to be a little bit gross, to be honest. It was at a restaurant and I only had the one glass, so I'm not sure if it was the wine or my tastes had changed. When I had more wine later that week it tasted much better. Be forewarned though - even if the buzz is not greater after W30 the after-effects certainly are. After clean periods I have found myself hungover from two glasses of wine. Your body is likely much more sensitive to toxins now that you've cleaned it out. I think Lisa K is right about no particular alcohol being better than any other alcohol, but overall I think it would be best to avoid alcohol choices that are also going to throw a wrench in your reintroduction in other ways, such as beer (gluten), or mixed drinks with sugary mixers, etc. I think wine is the way to go. But for the reason stated above I'd stick with 1-2 glasses at the most.
eims13
Thanks guys.. So I headed out and yes I drank.. Stuck to the red wine although I defo had more than 1/2 glasses.. I feel ok now. Had bit of a hangover this morning but not the worst 1 I've ever had.. So I think red wine will def be staying for me not sure what food group to try nxt.. Maybe diary as some ice cream would be nice but not overly caring about it... Is it ok to experiment with chocolate as a re introduction?

nutshell
When not whole30ing on occasional nights out I stick with either red wine, vodka sodas with fresh lime, or maybe tequila. I definitely try not to mix drinks and take it slow! I read somewhere that while no alcohol is 'good' alcohol, red wine, vodka and agave tequila seem to be the drinks of choice in the paleo world, so I've stuck with these. Robb Wolf's NorCal margarita is a treat I've yet to try too!

Krista Billows Rodriguez
Interesting article, I hope to be able to enjoy a glass of red wine or bourbon from time to time, but I may end up in the **can't toleate it** camp....sigh....
praxisproject
Before I started Whole30 (I was eating mostly Primal at the time) I had a glass of port (high quality) at Xmas. I probably haven't had anything to drink in the six months prior, maybe a little wine in cooking though. I was SO sick the next day, I felt like I'd had 14 margaritas and danced on a table lol I don't think I'll be adding much alcohol back, aside from cooking. Help! @Karin: I've had really bad stomach issues for the past couple of years as well. I've gone to so many doctors, have done scopes, taken prescription meds for gastritis, the whole bit. I started eating Whole30 based on a doctors recommendation. Cutting out diary, sugar, and grains has really helped me learn what my stomach can and cannot handle. From my experience, I know that I absolutely cannot handle alcohol. When I do drink I often feel the effects for a couple of days (usually sharp, sharp stomach pains). My recommendation is that next time you feel inclined to drink, try sticking to one glass/bottle and drink it slowly. See if that triggers any stomach pains. If it does, you might want to stay away. I know that this might not sound "fun" but after a little bit I got used to going out with friends and I enjoy myself more knowing that I can wake up the next morning feeling good. Best of luck. Bethie Annie
So, if I re-introduce wine on my first night off.....I won't be in fat burning mode anymore??
KarenT
Thanks for the warnings about alcohol. I've had hiatal hernia problems in the past and rarely drink, but will stick to sparkling water with a twist of lemon when I finish my Whole30 program on Friday. melody
Don't forget that many alcoholic beverages have gluten in them, so when re-introducing it, having a drink that's gluten free may make it easier to clearly know what's up!
