AmyS
I just checked the label of the balsamic vinegar I used daily throughout my entire first Whole30 and two weeks into this second Whole30. It. has. sulfites. I just couldn't be more delighted. Grrr... I'm not one to say my first Whole30 didn't count, since I achieved SPECTACULAR results, and the two weeks of this one have also been amazing. I know officially I should say I haven't done a Whole30 yet, but I'm gonna be unofficial about it, since I've had such a wonderful experience. Except for reading vinegar labels. It never occurred to me that vinegar would have something other than vinegar in it. Le sigh. Off to the natch to see if they have something that is actually just vinegar!! Next I'll be checking my tap water for sulfites and dextrose. Hmph.
MJam
Such a bummer! I feel like your experience is a great learning tool for others. It seems people are getting tripped up on label reading (or at least the threads I have been reading). For balsamic apparently you have to buy "the good sh*t" that is $400 a bottle to have no creepies in it...I was looking and researching the other day for the husbie who is an ACV hater (seriously, who hates acv??) Now the 65 billion dollar question...are you restarting or just moving forward?...inquiring minds want to know lady (I'm cool with either )
Rachael2288
The mods can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure those are naturally occuring sulfites and are fine during a Whole30...
Susan W
If it says "naturally occuring sulfites" like mine does, it's fine. If it's in the ingredients list, I am not sure. My ingredients say "organic balsamic vinegar and organic grape must".
jennrider
Grapes produce sulfites so if they are naturally occurring they should be fine. The reason they add sulfites to wine is to keep it from turning to vinegar so I don't know why they would add them to vinegar.
Robin Strathdee
Maybe to stop it from getting vinegarier?
AmyS
Robin, Vinegarier is my new band name. Bwahahahahaha!! F#ck Sulfites will be our first hit single. Believe. Mjam, I'm continuing as I am, ending Dec. 24 (um, minus the sulfite-y vinegar). Then I'll re-start an entirely sulfite-free (one sincerely hopes) Whole30 Jan. 2. I understand that there may be naturally occurring sulfites but my vinegar has them on the ingredient list. So I need to shop. Fortunately I have plenty of Braggs ACV in the house to tide me over until next shopping trip. At this point in my journey I appreciate both the freedom and the discipline this way of eating provides. I feel like I'm half my age, and I am delighted with the results. My goal isn't really to end a particular Whole30 and work to reintroduce certain foods. It's more to go more in-depth with this way of eating and make it a lifestyle. I don't know if that makes sense, but I can see that this way of eating is great for me so I'll be continuing it in a structured way, and then at some point as I decide to reintroduce things I'll know to avoid SULFIIIIIITES at least. Ha!
Susan W
I rrally hope that the original spirit of W30 pervails and if you chose to do something else then go do that.
Susan W
I have no blog..I never will. Good luck to you.
AmyS
I rrally hope that the original spirit of W30 pervails and if you chose to do something else then go do that. Beg pardon? Not sure I understand the content of your post. I have no blog..I never will. Good luck to you. Ah - thanks? Again, not sure I understand. So - I'm back to report two things: 1. The ingredients list says (and I'm quoting punctuation and how many lines are in the list of ingredients as well as words) Ingredients: Balsamic vinegar of Modena. Includes sulfites (6%). So I'm not sure if this is a naturally occurring thing as mentioned above, and just noted in the ingredient list, or if it's added in. In any case, I won't be using that particular vinegar again. 2. I had an interesting reaction to this discovery. At first I felt betrayed by Safeway! Heh. Then I thought, well, I've had splendid results and this is really my lifestyle so a realization that I ate something that wasn't good for me is really just information. I know I'm going to continue the Whole30 lifestyle, so - onward! And then I thought, STARBUCKS!!! snort Anyway, I banished that thought, used ACV with my dinner, and watched White Christmas (now streaming on Netflix!). I think White Christmas is definitely Whole30 approved. A most sulfite-free movie. Awesomeness!!
MJam
Haha betrayed by Safeway! Nooooooo.....those dastards! I love all the kiddie Christmas cartoons like the Grinch and Frosty...the Grinch looks like he could use some Whole30 lovin'...too many sulfites for him and his sour (vinegarie?) Grinchy frown teehee
