jamurphy
I just completed my 30 days of Whole30. (second time - last time I did it for months) I was sick of cooking so last night I picked up a Costco chicken for dinner. All day I ate compliant foods and for dinner I had some chicken, string beans and roasted butternut squash. Last night and this morning I have had extreme itchiness from my waist to my knees. I have scratched myself raw. I am positive that the chicken was the only thing I have eaten that was new. There are a few ingredients they baste it with. Has anyone else had this experience and any idea what could be the culprit? Since I only ate a few slices I am amazed at how clear and quick my reaction is. From a website I got these ingredients: "No preservatives, no MSG, gluten-free, no artificial flavorings or colors. Contains chicken, water, seasonings ==> salt, sodium phosphate, modified food starch, potato dextrin, carrageenan, sugar, dextrose, spice extracts." Moderators ShannonM816 Posted February 2, 2018 Moderators Share Posted February 2, 2018 I know some people react badly to carrageenan, so that's a possibility, but modified food starch can contain gluten, so depending on how you react to gluten when you do that reintroduction, that also is a possibility. For now, go back to eating Whole30 until you feel better. You might talk to your doctor about this, especially if you're still itchy -- allergy meds or anti-itch creams might be helpful, but we can't really give you medical advice, so you'd need to talk to a medical professional about it. They might also have better options than you can get over the counter anyway.
laura_juggles
Could be the modified food starch, which is typically made from corn, wheat, potato, or tapioca. Another biggie is the carrageenan. Lots of people react to that.
