Day 15 Constipated with no gallbladder

In need of some help! I have read through several forums already and I have done the things that most are recommending. Here is a little about my situation. We are on day 15 of our second round of whole30, and I have dealt with constipation chronically (on and off). I thought that this would help and the first round it actually didn't seem to be an issue. This time around is a entirely different situation; major constipation, bloating and a lot of gas  (such a fun topic right?!). I had my gallbladder removed a few years ago (biggest regret). So I am unsure if that is the problem - just looking for some advice from anyone who maybe experiencing something similar. I am drinking plenty of water, taking magnesium supplement and a digestive enzyme. My energy level is great - but sleeping is on and off - mainly due to constipation. HELP!

Can you provide us with details of what you've been eating and we can see if anything stands out.

absolutely!

Yesterday-

Breakfast (730) took two digestive enzymes: sauted shaved brussel sprouts with garlic - in olive oil. 2 hard boiled eggs. sauted red skin potatoes and onion in olive oil. 2 reactive magnesium supplement (235mg each)   930: green mint herbal tea - a that's it bar with a small amount of raw nuts (was getting ready to go walking with some friends who are aware of the constipation issue - so we were determined to get it moving! ha ha)

lunch (1130) took two digestive enzymes: "tacos" - leftover ground beef, sauted kale onion and garlic, avocado, salsa wrapped in romaine and drizzled with tessamae's ranch - and a peach

100: mint tea with a scoop of collagen peptides

dinner (530)took two digestive enzymes: naked rotisserie chicken, roasted brussel sprouts and carrots - both tossed in olive oil , and about a 1/4 c of guac

900; Epsom salt bath - 4 dried prunes and a few olives (odd combo yes) - 4 reactive magnesiums supplements

today-

Breakfast (900) digestive enzyme; 2 fried eggs, leftover potatoes (from yesterday morning), sauteed kale and brussel sprouts - in olive oil  Herbal mint tea  2 magnesium supplements

Lunch (200): Danielle Walker's roasted veg and chicken soup - contains: butternut squash, a little sweet potato, onion, garlic, spinach, kale, and chicken - with an apple

300: cup of black coffee with a scoop of collagen peptides

Dinner (630): pulled pork, asparagus sauteed in ghee , cubed sweet potato, sauteed "slaw" - onion, red cabbage, kale, broccoli slaw, garlic, olive oil - 4 dried prunes

845: 4 magnesium supplements

900: epsom salt bath

This clearly is just a snap shot of the last couple of days. Drinking a lot of water. If you need me to go back further I probably could (I had to keep a very detailed log of my diet about a year ago - so it is easy for me to recall now... haha). I do also take a bioidentical 200 mg progesterone orally and IC NP Thyroid (waiting for nature thyroid to come back in stock) for my thyroid.

Let me know if you would like any other info - I am in desperate need of help! Thanks so much!

Nothing looks too bad here... the only things that I can see would be the nuts (which for some people cause loose stools and for other people bind them up), the starches - on your second day you list them at every meal so that could be contributing  - I know for me, too much starchy carbs means bathrooming is less pleasant.

Have you tried a different form of magnesium like Natural Calm which is magnesium citrate?  Sometimes the different formulations work differently for different people so it may be worth a try googling a bit to see what might work best for your situation.

Failing all that, I"d go to the doctor and see what they have to say and see if your progesterone has constipation as a side effect (or any other medication you take).

Oh and one more thing... a 'lot' of water means different things to different people.  I would make sure you're hitting our recommendation of a 1/2oz of water per pound of body weight.

  • 1 month later...

I know it's been a while since the last post but I am wondering if you figured anything out? I too have had my gallbladder removed (also regret) and have chronic constipation since pregnancy/birth. My Whole30s pre-pregnancy I had regular BMs, then it went down hill once I got pregnant. I am currently looking into my constipation possibly being a symptom of a thyroid imbalance. So far I have found that I do not have optimal FT3 & FT4 levels so I may be hypothyroid. I am just starting another Whole30, then after 30 days I will do the autoimmune protocol. I've read a bit about hypothyroid and it seems like I might benefit from it. It seems this is all just trial and error.
