Popcorn

I have a bad medical condition that requires me to have an absurd ammount of salt everyday (10,000mg). I have become very used to having 7000mg or more with homemade popcorn cooked in olive oil. Would it be possible for me to do the Whole30 and also have popcorn. My other option is to take salt pills but I would require me to take 21 of those a day to replace my popcorn. It would cost me a lot of money and would prefer not to do that unless absolutely nessisary.

Unless your doctor has prescribed popcorn, then no, that would not be in keeping with the program.  Can you not salt your meals or find other items that taste really good salty?  Avocado with lots of salt and lime is delish, eggs are great salty, you could put fish sauce (extremely salty) into most of your foods... maybe there's a way that you can increase your salt intake via program approved foods so you only need to supplement with the pills?

Yes, yes it absolutely could harm your results.  Have you read any of the books? The resources on the site? The grain manifesto?

Also, popcorn is not allowed on the whole30 per the rules. If you're eating popcorn, you're not doing a whole 30. Could you see some effects/ improvements from doing a BMachine30? Also yes.

You need to intake 10g of salt each day, or of sodium? Are the salt pills buffered with other ingredients?  And I don't understand how 21 pills each day would cost a lot of money, but the same amount of salt sprinkled on popcorn is less money?

Out of curiosity, I just measured out 10g of kosher salt.  It was about 3 2/3 tsp (a little over a Tablespoon).  A lot, yes, but I can almost assure you that I eat that much a day by heavily salting my Whole30 food (I have low-ish blood pressure).  I liberally salt my food as I cook it, and then I salt it again when I eat it.  I don't eat 1 Tablespoon in one sitting, but spread over 3 large meals, I don't think you'll have a problem.

Avocados, eggs, potatoes, wilted greens, meat, roasted veggies all benefit from generous sprinkles of salt.

You could measure out your 10g each morning, and then make sure you add it to your food throughout the day.  I think you'd find that you don't need as many salt pills as you expect.

- Oops, just reread and realize you need the 10g in sodium only.  Salt is about 2/5 sodium, so that is significantly more salt required.  However, have you ever looked at the sodium content of Whole30 compliant foods?  There is probably lots of sodium in canned fish, some vegetables, seaweed, etc. to supplement.

The 10g of sodium. To intake 7000mg of sodium I need to take 21 Of these pure salt pills. They would end up costing me an extra $50 a week. I know it’s not to much money for some people but it sure is to me.

What about my suggestions to eat as much salt as you can on the program and then supplement with the pills?  Like @berry straw said, there are lots of program approved high sodium foods... olives in brine, fish sauce, canned fish etc... what about trying that suggestion?

I just googled 'foods high in sodium' and got this list (which I've edited to remove non compliant suggestions from).

If what you were really looking for was for someone to say go ahead with the popcorn, no one is going to say that... that's a choice you'll have to make yourself but corn in general is pretty inflammatory, causes digestive upset in people including bloat and loose stools and will completely skew your results if you eat it every day of the program.  Especially because there are options that don't involve popcorn such as heavily salting foods that taste good with lots of salt, finding prepackaged high sodium foods and supplementing with fewer salt pills instead of considering it's either popcorn or $50 of salt pills.

High-Sodium Foods:
  • Smoked, cured, salted or canned meat, fish or poultry including bacon, cold cuts, ham, frankfurters, sausage, sardines, caviar and anchovies.
  • Salted nuts
