the_wendy_house
Well. Day 1 of my first ever W30. I've prepped, weighed in, thought about my goals, and made a note of my health! I'm feeling ready for it - though we haven't had a particularly unhealthy Christmas I am really craving healthy foods at the moment and even my favourite (and rare!) Lindor chocolates have been mostly abandoned between Xmas and NYE. Though I do desperately need to lose a lot of weight, I'm primarily doing this for health reasons in the hope that the weight stuff follows naturally. I am currently suffering from two frozen shoulders (one for about 18mths now and the other is a recent acquisition, joy of joys...) and my health has plummeted over the last year and a half. Ordinarily I love exercise, but all the things I love (swimming, badminton, aerobics, etc.) are SO tough when you can barely lift your arms above shoulder height. Some times I actually have to have my hubby help me to dress it's that bad... My asthma is also rotten at the moment (no doubt not helped from the lack of exercise), my skin is horrible, I was recently diagnosed with IBS (though that's more stress related), and I have several other tedious complaints that I won't bore you with! Basically I am 30-something and feel like I'm falling to pieces, so frankly there is nothing to lose! Remarkably, my husband has agreed to join me on my W30 journey. I am, perhaps unfairly, not entirely convinced he's going to make it (he has his own health issues, though his are more head related!) but I'm really excited that we're doing it together. Since I moved away from my parents I miss having the support of my Mum for stuff like this. She has always been my partner in crime and everything seems harder without that support! So Day 1 and we're doing fine so far. Bakes scrambled egg and spring onions (AKA scallions) in prosciutto cups for breakfast and a big fat salad with all sorts of veggie goodies, plus some chicken and sunflower seeds for lunch. The kombucha I ordered hasn't arrived yet so it's mostly water to drink with a bit of Lady Grey tea thrown in for taste. No idea what we're going to have for dinner but I'm a creative enough cook and there's so much in the fridge that I have no concerns about winging it! Thankfully I'm not back to work til 7th which gives me nearly a week to adjust and get to grips with what we need to make this work. I've already had to pop back to the supermarket for stuff so it's really handy to be at home during the steepest part of the learning curve. Hubby is back tomorrow but only ten minutes down the road so I can always run emergency rations over to him if we completely misjudge his lunch supplies! Hahah! I've decided to start doing my aerobics videos again (albeit sans arms most of the time), am diving (the springboard/platform variety, not the scuba sort) once a week when my shoulders permit, and am trying to organise a weekly walk or something with a friend as well. I may attempt some weights to try and build some shoulder strength but just have to see how mobile I am at the time and take that on a day by day basis. So I'm as ready as I can be. Bring. It. On. Karin
Wow!! Good for the two of you! Keep up the great enthusiasm-you will certainly notice some health improvement soon! Karin
the_wendy_house
Thank you, Karin! I'm really interested to see what improves over the next 30 days. My sleep is poor but that's mostly from the shoulders and being unable to get comfy (I think, anyway) so if this helps my shoulders in any way that would be awesome. I'm going to purposely avoid the anti-inflammatories as much as I can unless they really get too bad to stand - I want to know authentically what's improving and what isn't. kb0426
I had frozen shoulder last year. It took 6 months of physical therapy but it is now resolved. I am just curious if you have had your thyroid checked recently, as my PT had indicated that is some patients there is a connection between frozen shoulder and thyroid issues. Best of luck on your journey!
the_wendy_house
Actually I'm waiting on results from a blood test on all sorts of things because of the shoulders and also various other stuff that implies some sort of deeper problem. So we shall see! Impressed that physio healed yours - I've had loads (about to start another round) with no real success and my GP tells me it's just a waiting game and "generally goes away by itself within two years". Niiiiiiice... Out of interest, was there any exercise you found you could do which didn't overly irritate it?
Derval
Have a great w30 Wendy! Look fwd to our M&S fact finding missions!
kb0426
I had to modify any strength training exercises, and simply focused on doing well what I could do. I went 2x a week for PT; it was expensive but so well worth it. I went from not being able to move my arm up over my head (my elbow would get to about shoulder length before it "froze") to having normal range of motion again. Now, if I could heal a torn ligament in my foot .
the_wendy_house
Maybe I should consider that... SOOOOO much money though. I bought a sill (not really - it's awesome) massage machine thing that you lean against and that's really helping to keep the surrounding muscles relaxed which is helpful at least
the_wendy_house
Day 2 So last night was a big challenge! I couldn't get to sleep for love nor money and, when I finally did, my dearest darling woke me up an hour or so later because he was starving hungry and wanted to know what he could eat. He has VERY funny blood sugar levels so interesting to see how he copes (or not) with this. When I eventually got back to sleep I dreamed about accidentally eating crisps (potato chips) without realising and feeling so guilty! How funny... Anyway, I reckon we didn't have enough starch at dinner perhaps so remedied that tonight with a little sweet potato. Despite the lack of sleep I felt ok this morning but have got gradually grumpier as the day's worn on. This is the third day I have had to go to the supermarket and stock up on more things and the daily shop is a little irritating, not to mention I have spent an absolute fortune on food these last few days! OH determined but not coping too well - he looked like a zombie by the time he got in from work and is struggling to concentrate. Hopefully he can make it through the worst of it but only time will tell! Breakfast was same as yesterday (ham and egg cups), lunch a fig, parma ham and avo salad, and dinner a chicken, bacon & mayo bake thing (didn't work so well with homemade mayo but it'll do!) with steamed veggies and a little sweet potato. I baked a savory pumpkin pie earlier to have for us to have for breakfast tomorrow because we both felt a bit nauseous eating the ham egg cups for brekkie even though they were under 2 days old, so that clearly isn't going to work. I tasted a little of the pie and I'm not sure it's much better than the cups but there you go! I also need to think about some other lunch options cos for some reason salads take me forever to eat and, while that's fine when I'm home, it's not going to work on my London days when I sometimes don't manage to take a proper break. Hoping I'll sleep better tonight. Though I'm still technically on holiday I have shed loads of studying to do and I need to be mentally on form. Summary of the day: Blah. Malfaitrice
I dreamt about slipping up and "accidentally" eating a tub of ice cream last night. Perhaps it's subconscious dragons airing their ugly heads in prime sleep time. Unnerving, but kind of satisfying at the same time, waking up and realizing that no, I did not fall off the wagon and down a whole Ben & Jerry's empowering, yet disturbing. the_wendy_house
I found it quite unnerving too - I have done a similar programme in the past (more strict about carbs but gave you "cheat meals" which did nothing but enforce my sugar binges!) but I've never dreamt about food before! Last night a lot better thankfully. Still had some funky dreams but none food-related!
the_wendy_house
Day 3 Sleep was better last night, thank god. In fact, I got a whopping nine hours and, while it wasn't perfect, it never is with my shoulders so I was pleased as punch Today has been a little easier for both of us. I'm still (more) grumpy (than usual) but not been hungry at all and feeling fairly good. Have a little bit of the detox flu but nothing major. Still cooking a LOT and still concerned about how manageable it'll be when I'm back to work, but this is our experimental time and from next week we'll just have to knuckle down on the whole. My OH's energy levels are back up a little today and he's doing a lot better. He's having his usual apple at lunch (an apple a day, and all that!) but has yet to use the emergency baby food (don't ask...) and a Nakd bar (like a Larabar I think) that he's taking for emergencies, which is pretty impressive considering his sugar addiction! New culinary experiments for me today have been kale chips (lovely, apart from I over salted them by mistake) and courgette (zucchini) "pasta" which, contrary to expectations, we were both really impressed with - we hardly knew the difference really. Breakfast this morning for me was banana and scrambled egg, lunch was some leftover chicken and bacon from last night with a big pile of baby spinach and dressing, and dinner was lamb meatballs with the "pasta" and tomato sauce. We were a little naughty and had some tangerine afterwards. I regret it a little in hindsight - it wasn't necessary other than for the sugar hit, but I don't have too much of a sweet tooth so don't think it will become a problem. Today I think I haven't drunk enough though - I've had a couple pints but I should be having more, I suspect. Need to watch that cos I do dehydrate easily. First workout on W30 tonight - just some light aerobics. Be interesting to see how I go. Summary of the day: Pleasantly surprised.
Derval
Oh those nakd bars, so good but just like candy really. Be careful he doesn't pick one of the ones with oats by mistake. Your days sounds good
the_wendy_house
Thank you! Luckily I do all the shopping (I doubt he even knows where the supermarket is... ) so no risk of the oat mistake. I bought a bunch just to have on hand for emergencies, exercise and so on and was surprised how edible they were (I'm NOT a date fan) but don't find them filling at all. Days perfectly tolerable so far but bricking it about next week! Trying to focus on the fact there's only really three days when I'm away from home that will be difficult! the_wendy_house
Day 4 Well, exercising last night was good. I was a little more energetic than I expected, truth be told! Today has been pretty good - no real cravings (though still in a very "safe" place so no temptation as it stands) and not hungry. Two deliveries arrived - some tea samples and my kombucha. I only had half a glass of kombucha (as directed) topped up with water but good lord did it wreak havoc with me! So for the time being I'm going to use it like cordial with just a small amount in the bottom. It took me ages to drink it even half and half because it tasted so strong. Anyway, two new drinks on the menu for me which is good. I'm hoping to find a tea I like (not much of a hot drink person at all) but happy enough with the range of drinks I have now anyway really so no biggie if I don't. Have noticed a couple of itchy/dry skin patches over the last 24hrs which I presume are W30 related, having never suffered with anything like this before. Conversely, my face has gone incredibly oily - like it's never been before as well! Quite odd. Both hubby and I have also felt particularly stiff in the joints, which is interesting. And hubby also reckons the dizziness from his labyrinthitis is a bit worse at present. Food-wise it was banana and scrambled egg again for breakfast. I can see this being my go-to brekkie out of pure convenience and because cold eggs seem to turn my stomach. Lunch was left over lamb meatball mix from last night, pan fried up with onion and cabbage, which was really nice. Dinner was a bit creative - cod battered with almond flour, served with parsnip chips (fries) which were a revelation, and steamed carrots and cauliflower. I tried to mash the cauli but it didn't work at all so need to look into that. Anyway, dinner was so filling that I left some of my fish. Another revelation! Hahah! The fridge is looking pretty barren now so time to do a big shop tomorrow. Feeling like I better understand what we want/need now which is good as I was really sick of going to the shop every five minutes and need to overcome that barrier. Summary of the day: Proud
Derval
Hey there, Just had to come tell you about the dinner I just had - M&S slow roast lamb with salt & pepper crust - soooo good, you have to try it! the_wendy_house
Oh god that sounds good! I will check it out, thank you! All good here thanks - bit hungry today but I can see I didn't have enough protein at lunch. Have had a little protein & veg snack and now hanging out for dinner. Didn't have time to post an update yesterday but will do one for yest and today later on tonight. How's yours going?

the_wendy_house
Days 4 & 5 No time to update yesterday, sorry. Always seems like whenever I keep a weekend free for something specific life gets in the way! So yesterday was fine. We went into town (we don't go in often) and my OH commented that he found it quite challenging - all those smells and temptations! I found they didn't bother me too much but then we had just had lunch! Got up late and found that disruptive. It kind of threw out my eating times so I had breakfast (bacon and spinach) and then wasn't hungry for lunch but felt I should have something so went for baked aubergine and mandarin (not together!) which seemed to do the trick. Dinner was cajun chicken pieces with a huge pile of brocolli and some sweet potato and carrot chips. Went to bed late as worked until fairly late and then needed a bit of downtime. This is a bad habit I always get into when I'm on holiday and will be broken as of back-to-work tomorrow! Today we have both been hungry. We had bacon, egg, spinach and onion for breakfast and, though tasty, there wasn't so much protein. Same at lunch - we had ham salad and three thin slices of ham each wasn't comparable to a chicken breast or something like that. I ended up snacking on babyfood and cashews a couple hours before dinner. Dinner was roast though which was lovely. Chicken, steamed carrots and some roasted veg (artichokes, sprouts and parsnips), with a little chicken juice as a gravy of sorts just to moisten it up. Lush! Managed to get some exercise in earlier but nothing yesterday. Was quite lethargic today but am still not sleeping well. This itchiness is ridicularse! My chin has now come out in a rash too (as if the back, abdomen and leg patches of itching insanity weren't enough) and it's so hot and itchy. I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do about it really - the chin stuff in particular is really noticeable and distracting Back to work tomorrow. I'm mostly working from home so won't notice it too much, but then three days on campus. Feeling a bit lost with lunches but will try and make sure I have leftovers. Also, diving starts back tomorrow after the Christmas break and I can't wait! Love my diving Summary of the day: Hungry.
Derval
Weird about the rash, have you introduced a new food since starting? Not coconut milk causing it I hope! quelle horreur!!
the_wendy_house
I've actually and very sadly had to make the decision to quit today. My rash went nuclear overnight and I now look hideous- swollen face and neck, angry red rash that itches and burns, a horrible infection kind of thing... It's truly hideous- I have been stared at all day. Got an emergency appointment at the doctors and they're not sure what it is but suggested ditching anything new immediately and taking a course of antihistamines and antibiotics to clear it up. So everything new has gone for the time being and sadly that includes my W30 as it's quite possible it could be a detox rash. Hopefully once it's cleared up I can start reintroducing things bit by bit and try my W30 again. I'm truly gutted! :-(
Derval
Oh no! I've never heard of a detox rash...poor you. I wonder if the mods have come across such a thing before.
the_wendy_house
I started a post about my itchiness and skin issues a few days ago and had not had any replies so I'm guessing not. My other half (who researched detoxing and so on before we started this) said that detox rashes are not uncommon and googling sees a lot of mentions of it on forums and other pages. Not definitive but nonetheless. I'm not personally particularly convinced that's what this is (it's not just a rash, it's a rash and then some, plus there's other things it could be) but it doesn't really matter; this is really bad and I can't afford to be housebound at the moment. I just need it fixed ASAP so I'm willing to try anything and then revisit my W30 in the future when I'm happy that hasn't been the cause.
