Here we go - my first whole 30

I start in the morning. I've been paleo-adjacent in the past, with cream & sugar in my coffee and wine in the evening, but this is my first whole 30. After having a great first half of 2012 physically, financially, we needed to have me back to work (we have two small kids), and with that, exercise went out the window first and bad eating habits crept in over the last few months. It was a productive fall and early winter, but I need to make sure I'm taking care of me.

Here are my goals for the Whole 30:

  • Nutrition - I will set aside time daily to ensure I have good food choices available the next day, even if that means running out to the store after the kids go to bed.
  • Sleep - I will stay up until 9:30 on nights I am not working out in the morning, in order to try to sleep better overnight. (I have a habit of waking up often during the night)
  • Stress Management -
  • Exercise - I will strength train at least 2x/week and run at least one mile at least 3x/week
  • Fun & Play - I will play with my kids without the distraction of devices for at least 10 minutes a day. (I play plenty, but always have my cell by my side for work)
  • Temperance - If I am full for the night, I will brush my teeth to signal that the kitchen is closed.

So far so good with day 1. Leftovers and the slow cooker are my friend.

Morning: The biggest change to my day was the switch to black coffee. It wasn't as horrid as I remember it being, but certainly doesn't do more than deliver caffeine to me. Now, I tend to sleep very poorly at night. I'm a light sleeper and tend to wake up multiple times during the night. I don't drink coffee throughout the day, just with breakfast, so I don't think that's the cause. That being said, without the warm melted coffee ice cream flavor to my coffee, I foresee one of two things happening by the end of my whole 30. I either adapt and like my coffee black, or I ditch the joe. I tried ditching it this fall, and while I didn't have headaches, I wanted to die from exhaustion in the afternoon. With two kids under 4, a full time job, and a house to run, the caffeine is the lesser of the evils for now...

Breakfast is otherwise easy for me. 9 times out of 10, I have an omelet with sauteed veggies, and some sort of meat - like sausage or bacon.

Lunch I had leftover beef tenderloin & broccoli, and dinner was a paleo slowcooker beef stew. I was hungry enough to have seconds, so yay to that. I did want something sweet and there was a half banana left over from the kids, so I had that and was good to go...
