Crystal's Whole 30 #1 - fresh 2013

I'm starting my first Whole 30 today to start the new year off right. I had bought and read It Starts With Food last fall, but never actually did a Whole 30. I've had Whole 30 days, and have eaten pretty Paleo for a while, but I have a few dragons to slay. First is alcohol. I do a lot of socializing that always seems to be centered around a party, happy hour, restaurant drinks, work event, or a bottle of wine with friends. I've recently gotten in the habit of having a couple of glasses of wine in the evenings just because I'm so used to the feeling of going to bed relaxed from the alcohol. I don't want to do this my whole life becuase this could not be healthy long term. This will by far be my biggest challenge. Second, when I mess up, I really mess up. I'll get a sugar craving and top off a bag of granola trail mix with lots of chocolate chips and dried fruit, or want to be overly full and eat a bunch of nuts after dinner. Third, cheese. I love to have cheese as a meal, even though it makes me bloated. So, to say I'm confident going into this would not be true, but my desire to clean up my diet and learn to have fun without the wine will hopefully guide me through this. I also want to get back into working out in the mornings. That makes me feel so good. I'm looking forward to getting into great shape, and it is liberating to know that the plan does not allow for any cheats. It kind of makes the plan a no-brainer- you don't have to struggle to decide if you are going to eat or drink something off the paln or not, or how much you can afford to indulge, you just don't. I'm going to like this.

Right now, I'm probably less than 10 lbs from my ideal body weight, but I want to FEEL better. I'm tired, bloated, and want to feel my best again. I want my energy and alertness back. I want to sleep through the night and wake up refreshed and ready to exercise. I HATE being hung over. I'm really looking forward to this. I've read so many testimonials, so hopefully this will be as life changing as it has been for so many others.

Today I was hung over and full from the New Years Eve parties. I fasted until early afternoon and had two baked drumsticks and sauteed red swiss chard with garlic and onions. I made a big batch of bone broth and made veggie soup for the week and had a couple of bowls of that with some avocado for dinner. Lots of water, and chai tea while I read my book all evening. Very nice start.

I had a great day 2 yesterday:

Morning workout: yoga at the house - APY 60 DVD #3

salad with spinach, avocado, and chicken

hardboiled egg and venison sausage stick

crockpot roast with grassfed beef, sweet potatoes, carrots and onions

broccoli

vegetable chicken broth soup

tea

I'm liking the tea in the evenings - it's a great replacement to wine since it's so cold and it's soothing and warms me up.

I did wake up early and do yoga at the house. What a nice way to start the day.

Day 3:

Up for an early gym workout - 25 min cardio and 10 strength. Was feeling a bit weak, but I didn't push too hard. Kind of tired and out of it today and yesterday.

2 hardboiled eggs & 100 cal nut pack

(oh my, I didn't realize how few nuts 100 calories is; it's like 10 nuts! What an eye opener when you are forced into portion control! I wonder how many nuts worth I would eat when just reaching from the bag all day for random unplanned snacks, or indulging at parties, etc?!)

salad with wild salmon, avocado, and spinach

crockpot roast with grassfed beef, sweet potatoes, carrots and onions

drumstick and sauteed green chard

tea
