Vermont mom
I am starting Whole30 today, at the advice of my doctor. I have unexplained, severe swelling in my lower legs and feet, and perhaps something in my diet is contributing. (And the extra 20 lbs I'm carrying around certainly aren't helping.) So, here we go. I do 95% of the cooking for my family of 4 and suddenly pasta, pizza, breads, ketchup, soy sauce, rice, coffee...out the door for 30 days! Does anyone else have experience continuing to cook satisfying meals for the family while adapting them for a Whole30 compliant diet? Should I just adjust what I eat (eg, burger with no bun), or completely change how I prepare the family's meals? All ideas and tips welcome! Thank you! We have had lots of conversations around doing this as a family - google is the best way to search the site for previous conversations which may give you tips and tricks or ideas... I would start with 'whole30 family' and see what you get and then do variations on the search terms and see what you find
LizaQ
I did/am doing it a few different ways. 1.I made a new recipe - chili without beans was not a hard adjustment for anyone. I ate mine with guacamole. They ate theirs with chips and sour cream. 2. I modified a regular recipe - I made tandoori chicken and just used vinegar, not milk. I was already making it dairy-free as I have a daughter with multiple food allergies so I was using oat milk. It came out fine with just the vinegar. I also served basmati rice with peas but I skipped that and made plain spinach for me. 3. I made 2 separate meals - last night I made rice with pork and pigeon peas. I put some pork aside for myself and made the rice as usual. Then I sauteed the pork and added yellow squash for myself. 4. I used leftovers a lot. Tonight my daughter is having the leftover rice and my husband, son, and I are having steaks. I'll make potatoes with butter for them and a veg with olive oil for everyone. Or other times I would make pasta and I would have leftover sweet potatoes, and everyone would have the chicken, which is not hard to make compliant and tasty. Be creative, plan leftovers well, be prepared to do a little extra work, make sure that they get their favorites sometimes. My son always get a burger after his guitar lessons and pizza before youth group. One a week or so we'll bring sushi home for my daughter. She's in college (living at home) and there's a Whole Foods, Chipotle, etc. right near her school and job, so she can eat anything she wants for lunch. My husband is flexible so there is always something for him to eat. Hope this helped!
