Kristen F
I am on day 49 (as I am taking the reintro slow) and continue to have most days of low energy. I eat a ton and mostly follow the meal template. I supplement my breakfast lunch and dinner with a small piece of protein pre and post workout, plus I eat a 4th meal around 4pm. I do about 90 minutes of intense cardio 6 days per week so I need the extra small meal. I am stuffed after dinner and satisfied after breakfast and lunch. I am continuing to lose weight, a total of 12 lbs. I am 5'9 1/2 " tall and most recently weigh 121 lbs. I am happy to lose some weight but that was not the reason I am doing Whole30. I am still as bloated as when I started ( which is one of the reasons I went on this diet) to try to determine what foods may be causing that as well as other digestive issues. While I have seen improvements in other areas, the bloating and stomach churning continue, and now a loss of energy. Any suggestions? I should also mention I am almost 50. Brewer5
90 minutes of intense cardio 6 days a week makes me lose energy just reading it. Lol. What about walks? It's no wonder you are tired. Stress will exacerbate digestive issues and you are stressing your body with those workouts. I know it's not what you want to hear, but maybe try to slow down a bit and see how things improve. Kristen F
Thank you for your reply! While I would agree with your logic, I should share that I have done this same workout for several years and I have never experienced the low energy before. The only thing that has changed is my diet. I am not sure why other than my body is still missing the carbs, or, I am processing the food more efficiently and as much as I am eating, my body needs more of something. Also, I really don't understand the new symptom of a churning stomach as this is also new with the diet. I repeated the reintroduction of gluten free grains and both times the churning stomach improved. It's all very confusing to me. One major improvement I have experienced is my knees no longer hurt. I have had 3 knee surgeries post accident and have suffered with knee pain for years, until now.
Brewer5
I understand what you are saying. What I am saying is that you are asking a lot of your body. I think a lot of people underestimate what a transition it really is to switch your body over from burning fast-acting grains & sugar to running on more fat & protein, as well as slower-burning carbohydrates. It is a big deal -- and our bodies are perfectly capable of doing it -- but there is a transition. You may have to ask yourself if that amount of cardio is truly necessary for your health and well-being, and whether that is where you really want all of your energy to go. Or would you like to have it for other things in life? As far as the digestive concerns go, I am no stranger to that. I have found many of the Whole 30 foods do not work for me. #1 to examine is whether you are eating a lot of nuts, seeds, and butters of these. #2 is are you eating a lot of raw vegetables and/or cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, etc). #3 is are you eating a lot of high-FODMAP foods. I'll attach my favorite list here. All of the things I have mentioned are common digestive culprits on a Whole 30.
Kristen F
I thought I would post an update in case it benefits anyone. As I mentioned, I was experiencing a combination of low energy and swollen ankles. Even though I was drinking the recommended amount of water, I felt like I was overdoing the salt. So I thought perhaps as result of I was dehydrated. I tried increasing water and reducing added salt to meals. Within 24 hours my energy came back and within 2 days my ankles were no longer swollen. I am guessing this is not a coincidence and am very happy to have figured this out. I am sharing in case this helps anyone in the future. Bottom line, listen to your body!
