Homemade Tomato Sauce

Recommended Posts

I tend to make my own sauce anyway, but it always comes out very acidic.  Without adding dates or anything, is there a way to balance the acid from the tomatoes?

It would be okay to add some dates if you want -- they are compliant, and while we wouldn't recommend eating tons of them on their own, a few in a recipe to balance flavors is definitely fine. You could also try blending in some cooked carrots or sweet potato to see if that would help. You might also look through other people's recipes on blogs and see how they address it -- just Google Whole30 tomato sauce recipes and see what comes up.

When I make tomato sauce I often roast a pan of finely chopped carrots, red peppers and onions (with some olive oil) and then blend the cooked veggies into the sauce. I do this simply to get more vegetables into my children, but it also adds some sweetness that helps mellow out the sauce.
