Getting a cold sore: can I use my over the counter lip ointment?

So I'm getting a cold sore and I would like to use my over the counter lip ointment to cure it instead of taking my prescribed pills/lip ointment from my doctor. I always have the meds handy for emergency, but I always try to heal it with coconut oil and this lysine ointment first. The meds are just all chemicals.

However, I'm not sure if the Lysine is allowed. It has lots of ingredients that all appear to be herbal stuff like golden seal, and also some random oils that I've never heard of like Melaleuca alternifolia oil. The most suspicious looking thing on it is the gum benzoin tincture and the above mentioned oil. Everything else I recognize as something like a herb or bees wax.

So I know that medicine trumps the program's rules, but since this is an over the counter option I thought I should ask. It's either this or the chemical laden meds and I'm against taking those meds unless I have to. I feel that they are more harmful for me than the cream. It's got less junk in it than chapstick and no mention of soy or anything like that.

So what do you think?

By the way: coconut oil works a miracle for cold sores! But I use the lysine when I feel like it's still coming even with all the coconut oil efforts. That's where I'm at now.

Lysine is a miracle worker on cold sores. Is it a supplement you're doing? I'd imagine it would be okay to use.

Good to note on the coconut oil though! I get "seasonal cold sores" when the weather shifts. I take Lysine whenever I can remember around that time to prevent cold sores. It's a protein your body can't make on its own but must absorb from your foods... I think it should be fine. That's me though.

Good luck with it!

You can get Lysine tablets too, I think it's about 1000mg a day, use as well as the ointment and it'll be gone really fast. Lysine is an essential amino acid and the Melaleuca is a natural oily tree (aka Tea Tree), the oil from it is antiseptic and often used in medicine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melaleuca_alternifolia try not to swallow any tea tree oil, it's toxic in high volumes (but safely used in shampoos, skin care and lip balms, so don't panic).

Thank you! I hope it's ok because I've started using it. Feeling really icky and worn out from the cold sore now.

I swear that coconut oil rubbed on the sore or the area when it starts tingling really helps. I had a really bad one recently but no other meds and it got really bad. So I researched paleo cold sore cures and saw that some people recommended coconut oil. Now I eat like a spoonful each day and use it on my lips regularly to keep them at bay. So far I get as far as I am today (no sore yet but super gross feeling) and it goes away! That's a win for me. I get them far too often.

Last time I felt a cold sore coming on I made a salve with licorice root and lemon balm, both are antivirals. It was before Whole30, so I used Crisco at the time, but you could probably make it with coconut oil. It's not pretty when worn, but works like a charm!
