Daniel Patrick â’¶
I made my first couple of posts in the intro section and started a blog with my "Before" pictures. I'll continue updating this thread as I go as well as the blog. I'm a 30 year old Air Force veteran, divorced father, and current university Senior majoring in Political Science. Intro - http://forum.whole9l...sabled-veteran/ Blog - http://danswhole30.blogspot.com/ Day 1 - I've had a persistent headache all day. My sleep schedule has been crazy since I've been on break. I typically sleep from around 5-6AM until afternoon. This is actually kind of "normal" for me and where I like operating. But classes start next week and I'll be adjusting my schedule back to "day-walker" hours. Today I ate: A Totally Tuna lettuce wrap from Jimmy John's A handful of almonds A handful of cashews 3 eggs, 4 strips of bacon, diced onion, 3 slices of tomato, and 4 chopped mushrooms 2 cups green tea
Moderators Tom Denham Posted January 3, 2013 Moderators Share Posted January 3, 2013 The amount of food looks like enough for maybe 2 meals. And maybe you just didn't mention the water you drank, but if not, you really need to add about 10 big glasses of water. More food and water could make a headache go away. Daniel Patrick â’¶
Yes, I didn't mention the water which I drank throughout the day. I'm not sure exactly how many glasses but there were several. I still have a headache today. I don't really think it's water or food related as I haven't had an issue before and this is more persistent that usual. I'll see how it goes throughout today. difwiz
Did they put mayo in the tuna at your Jimmy John's? I remember when I went to the one near me that the tuna was mixed with mayo, which probably contains oils that are not allowed on the Whole30. Also, did your bacon contain sugar? I have been having a VERY difficult time finding bacon that doesn't have added sugar in one form or another.
Daniel Patrick â’¶
Yeah, it was tuna salad which had mayo. Not something I would normally do but I hadn't gone to the grocery store yet. The bacon doesn't have sugar but it does have nitrates. I'm certainly going to do my best but I'm not going to drive all over town or pay exorbitant prices to make sure every little thing is perfect. I'm not going to "cut corners" and have any sugar, grains, etc but I'm also not going to get all organic, grassfed, pasteured, etc.
Daniel Patrick â’¶
The headache from yesterday persisted through sleeping and I awoke with it today. I drank more water and took a Goody's powder to function but it stuck with me for several hours. Finally subsided. I also had quite a bit of stomach upset today which makes me think that my headache and stomach ache may have been related and I was perhaps fighting off illness. There has been a stomach virus and flu going around this area. Today I made Coconut Curry Chicken in the crockpot. It was great and I ate quite a bit of it. I made a slight mistake by eating some Sriracha before I noticed that it has sugar and other things in it. I'd say I had less than a tablespoon and now I know to avoid it in the future. Today I ate: A banana A handful of almonds 3 bowls of coconut curry chicken and about 1/2 a cup of sauteed zucchini and yellow squash. 3 cups of green tea 10+ glasses of water I may still be eating less than I should but as I mentioned I had stomach upset today. For more including the recipes I'm using check out today's blog post: http://danswhole30.blogspot.com/2013/01/day-2.html

kshacklett
Dan, are you drinking more water than usual? From past experience of trying to aim for that "8 glasses a day" thing, I know too much water gives me a headache, so I just drink water with meals and when I'm actually feeling thirsty. Daniel Patrick â’¶
No, I normally drink lots of water and it's my typical headache remedy.
Daniel Patrick â’¶
Today I got to try out a new recipe: Shredded pork loin with caramelized plantains. The plantains were great whole, but I didn't like how they turned out in my blender combined with coconut milk as the recipe recommended. For that recipe and more details about how it went you can check out my blog post http://danswhole30.blogspot.com/2013/01/day-3.html Tomorrow I'm attending a Vipassana meditation session at the local Unitarian Fellowship. This kind of meditation is also referred to as "mindfulness meditation." I've only done a workshop before and meditated on my own a few times. I'm looking forward to meeting other meditators. If you'd like to know more about mindfulness I highly recommend Bhante Gunaratana's excellent book "Mindfulness in Plain English. It's available on Amazon, but can also be found for free at Urban Dharma in PDF format, ePub reader as well as HTML: http://www.urbandharma.org/udharma4/mpe.html Tonight my girlfriend and I went out for a dance night at a loca l bar. While things like that just aren't the same stone sober, I had a good time and drank a lot of water. Today I ate: 4 eggs, 4 slices of bacon and 3/4 an avocado shredded pork tenderloin and caramelized plantains fried in coconut oil with a bit of cinnamon and a whole sweet potato 4-5 cups of green tea 10+ glasses of water I don't feel particularly hungry right now but I might have some cherries or more avocado before bed. Daniel Patrick â’¶
Yesterday I ate quite a lot. 1/2 a smoked chicken, 5-6 smoked BBQ ribs (no sauce of course) Maybe 1/2 a cup of leftover shredded pork tenderloin and 1/4 cup of sweet potato Maybe 1/2 a cup each of red grapes and cherries 1 banana 4 eggs, 2 bacon slices, 1 avocado 1 cup of green tea
Daniel Patrick â’¶
Today I've been quite emotional over an argument with my girlfriend and haven't eaten anything except 1/2 a pan sauteed chicken breast. Let's call it fasting. EDIT: Later my girlfriend cooked chicken wings with Texas Pete buffalo sauce. I ate about 12 of those. They were delicious. Daniel Patrick â’¶
Today I ate: 2.5-3 tilapia fillets maybe 1/2 a cup of zuccini and yellow squash 2 black angus hamburger patties with sauteed onions and mushrooms and 1 fried egg over easy I drank water
kshacklett
I made that pork and plantains recipe too! And I had the same problem you did - my plantains came out kind of crumbly (I ended up adding a whole lot of coconut milk, but didn't help all that much). I'm thinking maybe the important part is where she said "brown" plantains - I wonder if this means they need to sit on your counter for a while, and then they would get more of a mushy consistency? I still have two left that I'm leaving out for a while to see - the pork was so good, I really want to figure out how to make this one work! I was happy with them sliced long-ways and fried with just a little salt and cinnamon. When i do it again I'll just keep them like that. Let me know if you find a method for making the mash that works.
Daniel Patrick â’¶
I've made it a whole week on my Whole30! With the exception the Sriracha mistake I think I've stuck to it 99.9%. Not a single piece off bread, pasta, grain, legume, or sugar! There have been some moments of intense cravings, but I've tried to react to these "mindfully" by just acknowledging the craving and feeling how those cravings arise and dissipate. Tomorrow I start my Spring semester of classes. I have a mandatory $300 meal plan at my university, so I'll be trying to look for things on campus that fit into my Whole30. Challenge accepted. This kind of meditation is also referred to as "mindfulness meditation." I've only done a workshop before and meditated on my own a few times. Sounds wonderful. I have been a daily meditator for 6 months after several years of less-regular practice. I've benefitted greatly and hope that others have and will benefit from my practice too. Daniel Patrick â’¶
I've been slacking on updating the past couple of days. Things have been going well. I did, however, eat some hashbrowns and ketchup yesterday. It was a moment of weakness. I felt really crappy afterward too. Lesson learned. Today I ate: 1 banana 1/2 a lettuce wrap with ham, roast beef, and spicy mustard A 6oz filet, 8 shrimp, 5 scallops and a sweet potato
