Keeping carb intake under 100g--question about ketosis

Recommended Posts

I haven't read ISWF yet (it should arrive today), so I'm curious what carb recommendations are for folks with whacked hormones.

I mentioned in my intro post that I am almost insulin resistant (HbA1c 5.6%). I would like to avoid diabetes II, and I certainly want to avoid glucose-lowering pharmaceuticals in the interim, so I'll monitor carb intake on this plan using a glucometer pre and 2-hours postprandial, mostly because I prefer empirical evidence over guesswork.

From what I understand, 100g and below is the generally-recognized carb level to induce ketosis. That's fine; I've been there before and I'll know I am back as soon as I observe a metallic taste in my mouth, the cloyingly-fruity smell in my sweat, and the oily swirls in my pee.

I have a question those of you who have stayed on a ketogenic for an appreciable length of time: Does that evil cheese-foot-smelling reek phase pass?

One reason I've abandoned previous carb-restricted plans is from embarrassment. It's not neighborly to walk around the world with breath like a flamethrower, and ketosis smells like a rancid cocktail of acetone and rotting pineapple juice. Upping my water intake dilutes the pee swirls but it never did anything to ameliorate breath you can practically see in a plume.

So I am hoping the stink phase is fleeting. Do those of you who have people you kiss on a daily basis get told you have stinky breath?

the Whole30 is not a carb restricted plan. We eat lots of winter squash, parsnips, onions, sweet potatoes, etc. If you need to restrict carbs due to health issues, that's fine, but I think even with type 2 diabetes, a level of carb intake above Ketosis is recommended.

I'm so excited for you to read the book! SO much is explained in there :)

100g of carbs a day is a pretty good sweet spot for fat loss, but is NOT low enough to enduce ketosis. Atkins induction phase is <20g/day, for that very reason.

We do NOT encourage you to consciously restrict carbs (this would generally require you to start counting/measuring, which is a no no), nor do we recommend prolonged amts of ketosis for most people.

If this is your first Whole30, I'd just stick to the meal planning guidelines and see where it gets you. There ARE some people out there that have broken their metabolism enough that just do better with fewer carbs, but even if you fall under that category, it's still HARD to get over 100-150g/carbs a day by following M&D's guidelines. Personally, I have to _try_ to get there every day. Try it as outlined for the 30 days, then experiment with tweaking some other stuff...but don't mess with the program before you try it first!

sorry to jump in here, but i'm wondering how many carbs is around 100 g/day? i follow the whole30 guidelines and eat still i'm content. i also throw in about 1/2 a sweet potato a day because otherwise i feel like a B*%#H! :) but i ask because i am interested in the fat loss part of it all.

Jenny, honestly? Just stick to the meal planning templates. M&D have taken standard folks' goals into consideration when constructing them, and they have this stuff built into the program. Don't overthink it :)

That being said,

1 medium sized sweet potato is 25g of carbs. I couldn't eat 4 in a day if you paid me. (okay, MAYBE if you paid me...but it would still be a struggle.)

The oh so demonized banana is 25g. I COULD eat 4 of these, but I would never want to.

An entire head of cabbage is only 70g.

When you aren't eating processed foods and calorie dense grains, it is HARD to get up to that number.

Just follow the guidelines, it will be okay!

Old hot dog water!!

About 2 pounds of veggies plus other carb. For example, when I was tracking input on Fitday, 100g (gross) of carbs on a typical day came from these foods:

8 ounces full fat, plan yogurt (measured out and then strained)

1 once raw oat bran

8 ounces berries (I mixed blue, black, and rasp into the yog with the oat bran)

8 ounces salad (like 10 ingredients), 2x a day

8 ounces steamed veggies, 2x a day

At 75 net carbs (the above has ~25g of fiber), I never felt it was too low carb, and I didn't experience cortisol issues.

I've done Atkins/Protein Power. I felt fantastic, nay euphoric, on <50g of carbs, but anything under 50g gives me stinky breath.

Book arrived at 4:00, and I was able to get a little reading in, but I need to get back to it now.

Once you've been following the program for a few weeks and find you are eating well, AND healing your wacked hormones AND losing some fat you will probably find (like many of us have) you no longer care about ketosis and carb level and even the fat loss so much but more about how great you are feeling! Best of luck.
