Nicole
For the first few days of my first Whole 30; besides the rash that has developed all over my torso and the cold sore I got on day 2, and the nightmares I had last night about accidentally eating cupcakes and jelly beans (things I don't even like to eat when not paleo); other than those things it's been great. So, I've been paleo for 1 1/2 years and it's not like this is the first 4 days that I've gone without wine, chocolate, and cheese (things that I didn't quite gave up completely as a paleo girl); but the rash says otherwise. Although, I have also come off of birth control this month, so maybe it's partially related to that? You are supposed to have some weird reactions as your body adjusts to your own hormones again. I'm having family over for dinner tomorrow night, which is because it's their last night in town. I think they wanted to go out to dinner, which we just can't do. I feel a bit bad about not "just going with it" but this Whole 30 is important to me. I am normally very happy to go out to dinner as a paleo girl as a challenge to eat as paleo as I can, but I know that I can't do that on the Whole 30. Here's what I've been eating the last few days... Day 1 Coffee Scrambled eggs, zucchini, coconut oil Fried eggs, olive oil, rocket salad Cabbage, mango, cucumber, apple cider vinegar coleslaw Bell peppers, onions, duck fat Steak with chimichurri sauce (made from herbs from my garden) Watermelon (very few bites) Day 2 Breakfast Coffee Scrambled eggs, zucchini, coconut oil Lunch Leftovers from dinner last night Dinner Pulled pork Broccoli with olive oil Green beans, mushrooms, duck fat Day 3 Breakfast Scrambled eggs, zucchini, coconut oil Lunch Leftovers from dinner last night Dinner Pork meat balls with shallots, cilantro, and parsley on a rocket salad Multicolored cherry tomatoes with olive oil and basil Purple carrots Mocktail: muddled blueberries, lime juice, sparkling water (just a little fruit, not much) Day 4 Breakfast Coffee Scrambled eggs, spinach, coconut oil Lunch Leftovers from every night this week (leftover clean up) Watermelon whites (my acupuncturist tells me to eat them to get rid of cold sores) Dinner Asian soup: bok choi, snow peas, ginger, home made chicken stock, Thai basil, cilantro, chicken, coconut milk (no bad stuff added!) Mocktail: green and mint iced tea with cucumber slices and topped with sparkling water (it's summer in New Zealand)

Nicole
Your mocktails sound so good. I got every single idea from something I read via Whole 30. I think it was a random blog post about what else you can drink.
Nicole
How exciting! I have been upgraded from "newbie" to "member"!! I must be posting a lot! So last night I got: NO SLEEP!! I only know that I got a tiny bit because I had a few dreams, but I'm pretty sure it was more tossing and turning than it was actually sleeping. When I went to bed at my self prescribed bedtime: no later than 10 pm, I ended up reading until 11pm because I was wired!!! I felt like getting out of bed and dancing or doing yoga or something. It was odd! But instead I just forced my eyes closed and nothing! I did sleep like 10 or 11 hours the night before... Also, I continue to have more strange dreams about food. I think that this time I was actually turning down the bad food, or something like that. It's funny because I have been paleo for so long and I never dream about food. I have always been totally content with my dietary choices, and no complaints for lack of cupcakes or anything! I don't even really make paleo style junk food (I hate coconut flour). I still have hives, and I woke up with THE cold sore. It appears to be staying this time. I call this the "wandering cold sore" where my body seems to be fighting it off, but the little bugger is persistent and tries to appear in every location I have ever had a cold sore in the past. I have about 4 spots on my lip and 5 in my mouth where I've had them before... Joy... And it pops up here, disappears, then pops up there, and repeat. This time it settled on the original location. Nothing big yet, and I'm still hopeful that I can fight it off, but it's at that level that it might not go away. Grrr... I even went so far as to put apple cider on the tingly part of my lip... My grandma says her cowgirl mother used to do this, and that it was the "pioneer way." I hadn't tried it before today and can't say that it has worked, but I gave it a shot. There was no sore there yet so it didn't sting. I wouldn't do it on the sore. I drink 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water everyday because I was brought up on it and believe it is healthy... I feel like it should help with fighting off the cold sore virus, and maybe it is. But I also eat a spoonful of coconut oil every day to help keep it away. I've read that coconut oil actually breaks down the virus's membrane so that your body can fight it off easier. I just love it anyway, so that's enough reason for me to eat a spoonful! I also rub it all over my lips when I feel one coming on. One time when I did this it completely went away in like 2 days! Not so lucky at the moment. I still have my hives and I think they are getting worse. They aren't so bad though... I just keep getting itchy spots. I don't itch them though. I almost feel like taking photos of my stomach so that I can watch their progression as like a science experiment. I've been taking a photo of my face every day or so just to watch the changes. Also, I have been so hungry lately that I've almost been nauseous! Is that normal? I'm not fasting... I'm eating 3 meals a day, with enough fat and protein and all that goodness. No sugar either (obviously). I've had a few bites of fruit, but definitely well within the recommended daily amount. I guess I just need this to pass. Tonight we have family coming over so I will be making a Whole30 meal of tacos with some tortillas for them and lettuce wraps for us. They might not appreciate another carb-free meal... I've been feeding them this week And plus tonight we have a vegetarian coming, so I will be making a veggie medley to act as a meat substitute.
