Starting Over Criteria?

Recommended Posts

I was only on Day 2, but I'm starting over tomorrow because today I ate leftover chili from earlier in the week that had beans in it - I tried to eat around them, but I'm pretty sure I didn't completely. Then, I popped a piece of sugarless gum in my mouth after eating said chili, because we were leaving to run errands and didn't want chili breath. So much mindlessness! :).

My question is - is it ALWAYS the best decision to start over or are some things more "start over if you feel its necessary"? I think I read on here somewhere that gluten is especially troublesome so it's best to start over even after accidentally ingesting even a small amount. But what about the other "forbidden"s? I may be opening a big can of worms with this question, and I know for me I'll start over regardless just because I mentally put myself in that camp, but I'm curious if there are "less bad" off-limit foods.

I'm sure the mods will have a more clear-cut answer, but I think it has a lot to do with intention. My gut says start over, and plan better. get the gum out of your bag, get your fridge stocked and have the mindset that you are 100%.

For me, there is no such thing as "accidentally" eating something non-compliant. I don't have anything in my part of the fridge that I can't eat. Now Mr. Goddess' stuff is a whole other story...LOL!! But, that's not my food, I don't eat that right now.

I think the re-start is tricky...if you knowingly blow it and eat something you KNOW you shouldn't, then by all means, start over. If you "accidentally" eat something, look long and hard at how that could happen, and decide accordingly. The beauty of the Whole30 is that it gives us back our power to eat our way to good health.

For my Whole100 my stance is to trust no one!! If I don't buy it and prepare it, then it is suspect.

Hope this helps!!

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat. Today is the end of day 5 for me, and I've been 100%. I just got home from a long day of snowboarding, and my wife asks me to taste some food she made for a dinner with friends. Not thinking, I just take a spoonful of quinoa and black beans. It needs some salt and garlic. So I go to take another taste and pause as I realize I can't eat this anymore. So, it was a small spoonful, but was it enough to start over? I think it was a small enough accident. After 33 years of eating whatever I want whenever I want, sometimes I can be caught off guard.

From everything I have read I would say start over.

My basic understanding of the rules....if you eat something that is non-compliant it is best to restart as any amount may interfere with your results and healing process. Or, like yesterday's facebook crepe fiasco, if you eat something that is made entirely of compliant food but is technically not compliant, it is more of a lesson learned, continue from where you are as you didn't eat anything off plan just remember for next time.

Hope that helps.

That was quite the crepe fiasco. People seem to get very heated on FB.

I would personally not start over, but add some days if you do want to get the maximum benefit. It's a good wake up call though. So easy to eat mindlessly.
