Janette
Welcome to my journal! Thanks for stopping by. I love it when people say hi! A bit about FODMAPs The experts can explain it better than me, but if you don't feel like clicking through, the short explanation is that FODMAPs are certain types of short chain carbs that the body doesn't digest so well. Bacteria in the small intestine ferment these undigested carbs and cause digestive woes. Here is a chart of relative levels of FODMAPs in common foods. A bit about me I just finished my first Whole30 on January 1, 2013. I started it in mid-October, and I felt so good that I just kept going! January 1 made 100 days! That was exciting. However, I was getting a little too obsessed with the numbers, and a little complacent. I was also getting very good at violating the spirit but not the letter of the law. So, I took a few days off this week and had the treats I'd been missing, including some wonderful wine and champagne, and ate at restaurants without asking about all the ingredients. It was great! And now I'm back for the next round. Goals for this Whole30 1. Identify the specific foods that make me gassy, FODMAPs or otherwise. 2. Limit coconut manna to once a day. 3. Use eggs only for glue (sweet potato fritters, fried chicken) or condiments (mayo). 4. Limit nuts to an occasional food. 5. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Janette
Day 1: Back on the Wagon, this time with Family I'm particularly excited today because my husband has joined me for this Whole30. This is a minor miracle, given that he's a vegetarian who grew up in France (can't live without bread or wine!) and who believes that food has little effect on health beyond getting the right amount of calories. But he saw the amazing change in me, so he's decided to see what it can do for him. I started working out with kettlebells this morning. I may have overdone it because it was so fun. I haven't worked out for months, because I haven't slept since June! (I have a baby who wakes up quite a lot.) I'm really tired now. I'll be logging in extra detail for the next 5 days because I'm working with a Paleo nutritionist to get to the bottom of my digestive troubles. Food & supplements 7:30 - 1 tsp l-glutamine 8:00 - 2 cups of hash (ground beef, chard, spinach, sweet potato, gelatin, coconut aminos, chinese five spice), sweet potato fritters (sweet potato, egg, coconut flour, cinnamon fried in coconut oil), chai roiibos gelatin 10:30 - 1.5 tsp fermented cod liver oil/butter oil 12:00 - 2 oregano peppermint oil pills 12:30 - terriyaki salmon (fresh squeezed orange, coconut aminos), salad (mixed greens, cucumber, tomato, shredded carrot, vinagrette) 1:00 - 2 tbsp coconut manna, cinnamon, 2 tbsp frozen blueberries 3:00 - headache. This is unusual for me. Can't tell if I'm overtired or just dehydrated. 3:30 - gassy. 5:00 - vanilla roibos chai, biltong. 6:00 - 1 cup spanish cauliflower rice with tomato paste and cumin. 1.5 cups green beans with coconut oil and rock salt. 1 serving duck confit, small slice of hubby's steak (with garlic powder, smoke, coconut aminos) 7:30 - fell asleep with the baby until 10:30. 11:00 - ayurvedic dreamwell tea. Digestion notes Slightly burpy after lunch but before coconut manna
1Maryann
Hmmm. I have little trouble with almost anything on the "Avoid" list, but cucumbers, which are on the "Safe" list always repeat on me. I wonder if they could be an issue for you, too?
Janette
Maryann, I think you may be right! I'll have to try one on its own soon.
Janette
Day 2: Why Do I Feel This Crappy? I expected to feel a little lower energy at the beginning, but I feel downright awful! I am so headache-y and nauseated, like I'm hungover or something. My first thought would be die-off, but surely I couldn't have thrown off my intestinal balance that much in 3 days? Drank an entire bottle of coconut water in case it was dehydration. Didn't really help. Been terrible about logging my food since I've felt so sluggish all day. Did manage to buy a big jar and a scoby to start some kombucha. I can't believe I'm old enough that it's been 15 years since I made some! Also bought some brackets to anchor the furniture to the wall after reading this heartbreaking story about a 3 year old that managed to pull over a very low dresser onto herself and die. In a stupid bit of irony, the baby managed to burn himself on the closed oven this evening instead. I may be heading back for an oven-guard! Food Meal 1: Hash (Ground turkey, mixed leafy greens, gelatin, coconut aminos, smoke), Sweet potato fritters, chai gelatin Meal 2: Duck confit, carrot, pork smokies, salad (mixed greens, tomatoes, carrots, avocado, cashews), coconut manna, blueberries Meal 3: smoked cod, roasted eggplant, zucchini, bell pepper, tomatoes, pear tea gelatin Digestion Not gassy at all today, but fairly nauseated. Activity None. Still sore from the kettlebell workout. Mood Like a slug on a shaggy rug. Gratitude I'm grateful that my brother-in-law is such a great guy and likes my kids. I'm grateful that my husband is such an involved father. Wonderful things My husband told me he's fallen in love with me all over again and he doesn't know why. The baby has learned to wave. Scored some Magformers on sale on Zulily.

Janette
Day 3: More Company! I am well and truly shocked and pleased to report that both my parents-in-law AND my very own mother are hopping on the Whole30 train! I really never dreamed such a thing would happen, and I am as pleased as punch! And they all have the book! So even if they don't get very far with their first Whole30s, at least their thinking will have shifted a bit in the right direction. Today was our first day back to our routine; the kid was back to preschool and the husband was back to work. Kind of a relief to have quiet mornings again. It was also a day of abundance. I bought a bit too much in the green grocer and came home to a meat delivery that I could barely cram into my freezer. Now we just need a blizzard and I will feel SO clever and prepared! As Derval would say, it's Meatmas! Tried making my own tooth powder today. Felt all homesteaderish. Totally crap about logging my food again. Maybe I need to resort to plain old pencil and paper. They still make those, right? Food Meal 1: Hash (Ground turkey, mixed leafy greens, gelatin, coconut aminos, smoke, coconut milk), Sweet potato fritters Meal 2: Mustard glazed chicken thighs, mixed greens Snack: Frozen bananas, cashew butter, smoked salmon Meal 3: Satay shredded pork, spaghetti squash, cilantro in a lettuce wrap (old picture; my proper camera isn't working right now) Digestion Not gassy at all, except right after dinner. I think it was the sparkling water. Maybe the lime in it? Activity Lots of stairs for laundry day. Mood Improving. Savoring the quiet. Pleased about my mom and in-laws. Sleep TERRIBLE! Woke at least 6 times from discomfort, on top of baby wakings. The neighbors turned the heat off after bedtime so we froze, then turned it way up later so we baked. And then a leg cramp started that woke me hourly from 3. Gratitude I'm grateful for the food abundance in my life. I'm grateful for preschool and the community around it. Wonderful things I've never seen my baby so excited as when the babysitter came back after 2 weeks. It was so cute! My 4 year old was thoughtful enough to remember about my leg cramp tonight at bedtime, and wish me a quick recovery. So sweet. My brother-in-law practically forced me into playing and singing Snow Patrol's "Run" on the guitar and for the first time in my life, I wasn't self-conscious. I think I've finally grown up enough to not care if I suck at something!
melbournegirl
Hi Janette, I am also fodmap sensitive and checking out my reactions a bit more carefully this time. On my first whole35 I wasnt as careful as I had so many other new eating patterns to learn. I am doing a whole100 now to really see if I can get a healthy digestive system happening. I had my gall bladder removed (long time ago) so I struggle a bit with the fat and perhaps protein level. Its been a number of years since I have been stable digestion wise but the whole9 eating has cured my skin problems so I want to keep going and see if I can stabilise/heal on a permanent no dairy/legume/grain diet... Janette
Juzbo, I'd love to hear what you find out about your sensitivities. I know it's different for everyone, but I reckon there's always insight to be gained from watching others! Congrats on curing your skin. I haven't managed to yet. In fact, it's gotten a bit worse in my past few months of the Whole30. Ugh!
melbournegirl
Thanks janette, did you get the fodmap list from the sock-doc.com site? He has lots of useful info re natural anti inflammatories. I attribute my skin improvements to the increase in saturated fat, eggs and ghee in particular provide key building blocks for natural anti inflammatories. I am not sure but fish, acidic fruits and caffeine and cocoa seem to make it worse. I have been 2 steps forward one backwards but after following this diet since October pretty much I have finally reached a good patch that has lasted more than a week. I also think keeping my heart rate under 160 when exercising reduces inflammation too.
Janette
Juzbo, no, it's the list you sent me from http://www.drgangemi.com! Do all kinds of fish make yours worse, or just shellfish?
Janette
Day 4: Cranky After the 5th time the baby woke me up last night I thought, "well, at least the night is nearly over." Then I looked at the clock and it was...11:30! Phew, what a long night. So me and baby were very tired in the morning, and I could barely roll over when he squawked at 6am, so he ended up waking his brother up too early, so he was cranky, and then we all drove my husband crazy! Oh, what a special stage of life! Me and baby managed a nap, though, and by the afternoon we were having a fun and playful exercise session complete with kettlebells. And we made crafts. And stuck a glow stick in a balloon to make a wacky toy for the baby. I started watching the movie, "Happy" while making dinner. It's all stuff I've read before, but I'm enjoying the film and it's making me more mindful of cultivating habits that lead to happiness. Also perfected my tooth powder. I've been getting grossed out by how sweet toothpaste is, even the natural ones, so it's nice to be able to control the sweetness of the powder. And it's way yummier than any of the tom's of maine toothpastes I've tried. I used this recipe, without the baking soda. I'm also kind of amazed that I can walk down the street and buy myrrh powder. It's way overpriced, but sometimes I feel like I can get anything in this neighborhood! Food Meal 1: Hash (Ground turkey, mixed leafy greens, gelatin, coconut aminos, smoke, coconut milk), Sweet potato fritters Meal 2: Farmer's sausage, cauliflower rice Meal 3: Mustard-crusted pork, roast carrots and parsnips Dessert: Coconut manna, blueberries Activity 50 Kettlebell swings, 6 push ups, 60 dead bugs, 3km brisk walk Mood Started cranky; much better after nap. Sleep 9:30 - 6, 8 wake ups. Nap 12 - 12:30 Gratitude I'm grateful that my husband went to pick up the kid. I'm grateful that my children have no real health issues and that this sleeplessness isn't caused by serious pain. I'm grateful that I don't have any serious health issues. Wonderful things My kid picked out a red and pick ruffly umbrella for himself and couldn't wait to show it off to his friends at school. I love his innocence and his total lack of gender-typing. Had so much fun playing exercise class with my kid today. My brother in law told me how much he enjoyed discovering the cauliflower rice and spaghetti squash. He's now on his way to hot yoga with my mat and towels. He's come so far for a Frenchie!
Janette
Day 5: Wrecked Feeling wrecked today, but can't really blame the Whole30 for it. Was up all night with the babe, and then somehow wasn't able to eat my lunch until 4 (I usually eat at either around 11:15 or 12:45). That really kills me when I go without food for so long. Been feeling weak and shaky since about 2pm. I did have jerky and cashews in my purse, but my purse wasn't with me, sadly. It was all for a good cause, though. I stayed with my kid through a really amazing art and literature class that he loved. But sometimes he needs me around to get through his fear of new experiences so that he can enjoy all that life has to offer him. I don't think I'll need to stay so long in the future. The poor baby had to miss his early afternoon nap, too. (I hadn't planned on staying the whole 2 hours.) It seemed to really screw him up. I wonder what tonight will be like. The woman who ran the program was really lovely. And I realized that what I find attractive appearance-wise these days isn't slimness or dressing fashionably. It's kind eyes and seeming comfortable in one's skin. I need to remember that when I'm judging my own attractiveness. Was feeling utterly uninspired in the kitchen, and then saw this paleo ebook bundle sale. I jumped on it for the Well Fed Cookbook and the 30 Day Intro to Paleo book (for my mom) and the books about acne. 33 books - should keep me occupied for a bit. Food Meal 1: Bison porridge (bison, spinach, boullion, gelatin, coconut aminos, smoke, coconut milk), sweet potato fritters Snack: bananas, cashew butter Snack: the rest of my kid's lunch: smoked salmon, red bell pepper Meal 2: mustard glazed chicken thighs, spaghetti squash Meal 3: basa with truffle butter, roast broccoli, acorn squash Dessert: coconut manna, tangerine Activity None Mood Feeling a bit sorry for myself for not being able to sleep or eat. Sleep 10:30 - 9. 7 wake ups. Gratitude I'm so grateful my brother in law bolted the bookcase and dressers to the wall. I'm grateful my husband let me sleep in. I'm grateful to have found such a wonderful kids program nearby. Wonderful Things There is such abundance in my life right now, and I'm trying to embrace it as such. My husband and brother in law took all of the books off the bookshelf when they were bolting it to the wall, so we went through and organized them before putting them back on the shelf. Such amazing books we have! And we're so lucky to have Amazon and other sites to point us to the best books in each category. Also, 33 e-books! So many ideas! So much effort that was put into those! Only $39! Amazing. And I got 2 kettlebell workout videos from the library today. Man, I love my library. My freezer is stocked with healthy foods, my computer is now brimming with cooking and exercise ideas, and my kettlebells are waiting to do their magic. Lucky me! melbournegirl
I was trying to remember if you were the same Janette LOL. sock-doc is his other website... sorry.... to confuse you. I dont/cant eat any shellfish. Its the rich fish like salmon I am thinking.... Today though I have a really strong headache like I get when I stop coffee and a few more aches than usual so I am thinking more and more it might be the cocoa causing inflammation. I will soon find out as I had salmon today so if my skin gets better rather than worse its not the salmon. Of course it may end up just being a combination of things.. or an overload.... such a pain Hope your sleeping improves....

Janette
Hard day. Baby's sick. melbournegirl
Hey Janette, my skin got worse overnight (2-3 sore bumps when I woke up) but its stable or getting better now (its 4pm here) so it might well be the fish. At least I can rule out fruit now as I have had fruit on and off for the last 10 days... and coffee occasionally too. So its either some sort of cyclical inflammation or the fish! When its better I will have cocoa and see what happens. On the positive side, my IBS has improved dramatically the last few days maybe because of less nuts and extra sweet potatoes? Or more attention to fodmap friendly fruits and vegies. Will soon find out that too I guess depending on what the next trigger is. How do you go with avocado? I have tried to reintroduce it a few times but with no success (it is high in polyols).
Janette
That's really interesting about the salmon. Was it wild? Pacific or Atlantic? I eat a TON of salmon because I thought it was supposed to be very good for you. (And because I love it and it's abundant here in the Pacific Northwest.) Do you have the same problem with fish oil supplements? I got somewhat gassy from the avocado. Bummer.
Janette
Day 7: Run Down But Pleased For Hubby Baby had me up all night, so I'm feeling pretty beat. But I'm also very pleased that hubby made it to day 7 so easily. Granted, he has an awesome personal chef, but still the choices were all his. His brother has also been nearly compliant even though he hadn't planned on doing a Whole30, except for a bowl of cereal. I'm so pleased for them! Brother-in-law went to our local butcher that I usually avoid because he's so expensive, and asked for his finest steaks. He had 40 day aged steaks available, so he bought them all! They were delicious, if ridiculously overpriced. Food 4:30 am snack: Roast chicken (I'd been up for an hour and a half at that point, so I was hungry) Meal 1: Bison porridge (bison, spinach, boullion, gelatin, coconut aminos, smoke, coconut milk), sweet potato fritters Meal 2: Italian sausage, spinach, cherry tomatoes Snack: coconut manna, berries Meal 3: Steak, roasted zucchini, bell pepper, eggplant, and tomato Dessert: coconut manna, berries Activity None. I am wiped out and the baby doesn't want to be put down. Mood Wiped out. Did I mention that? Sleep 10:30 - 3, 5 - 5:30, nap 7:30 - 9 Gratitude I'm grateful that this illness will pass and there's nothing seriously wrong with my baby. I'm grateful that my older kid is suddenly interested in germs and immunity and helping his 'good guys beat the bad guys.' I'm grateful for my babysitter. I'm grateful that my brother-in-law is doing so much DIY for us while he's here.
melbournegirl
I think perhaps I have always had a problem with fish. I didnt eat it (except under sufferance as a kid ie when I was made to) until I was thirty. The recent salmon was tinned pink..... I more often have fresh from our major city market... since I am down under it probably wouldnt be atlantic unless it is farm fished, I must ask... I think I only once was brave enough to try fish oil supplements... didnt really like taking them. reminds me too much of when I was a kid and tried my dads garlic tablets.... was in agony for a few days after.... that was about30 years before I had heard of fodmaps LOL. On a positive note my skin is getting better still not worse despite me not being able to avoid having a coffee these last few days so it cant be caffeine... oh and silly me but I couldnt avoid (aka willpower issue) having some dutch processed cocoa last night that I brought with me to make chocolate custard with for the kids so I could use up a packet of rice milk I no longer want to have...... so thats promising re cocoa... wont know for sure till I test my regular one though. I love reading the meats you have..... bison..... I half contemplated buying some kangaroo meat... but I am not that brave. The kids and hubby have had it before but I am a woos when it comes to non standard meats. I bought a tin of sardines a week ago and havent been brave enough to try them either.... might be just as well for that one though.
Janette
Ooooo, I love me some bison! Does kangaroo taste a bit like venison? I can't imagine what it would be like. Glad you're having luck with your skin. I think I'm going to try to go a whole week without nuts (sounds so hard, though!) and see if that helps. Janette
Day 8: I suck at low FODMAPs! Baby's fever broke, so I'm hopeful about tonight's sleep. I did some inadvertent sleep training again - I was just too tired to wake up properly, so for about 90 minutes he just threw himself all over me sometimes for kicks, sometimes for fussing. I'm having second thoughts about using kettlebells right now. I've been feeling extra tired since I started them. Maybe I should stick to brisk walks until I can get some quality sleep to recover. I realized today that hubby's occasionally biting remarks may be due to his phase of the Whole30. So I'll just take them with a grain of salt and look forward to when he's feeling blissful in week 3. I am COMPLETELY failing to keep to low FODMAPs food. I feel under pressure to keep the veggies interesting for hubby and brother-in-law, at least until they hit their stride. My safe veg list is just far too restrictive right now. I've stayed in the "be careful" column of this list, but I know that broccoli and cauliflower make me gassy. At least I'm much improved from staying out of the 'avoid' column. Food Meal 1: Hash (Turkey, sweet potatoes, kale, broth, gelatin, chinese five spice) Snack: Coconut milk, chia, cinnamon Meal 2: Sausage, salad green, tomatoes, tiny bit of avocado Meal 3: Terriyaki salmon, roast broccoli, grilled eggplant Activity 3 km walk along the beach, in the wonderful sunshine Mood Improving Sleep 10:30 - 7:30, 7 wake ups Gratitude I'm grateful for the sun. I'm grateful the guys made lunch and cleaned up after dinner. I'm grateful my 4 year old has been so lovely. I'm grateful my husband and kid are so into museums. I'm grateful this tummy bug is nearly gone!
melbournegirl
I need a week without nuts and fruit I think - major wind at the moment....... Until whole9 I hadnt realised how much nuts affect my stomach... they are mod fodmaps though so I should expect that I guess. According to hubby, kangaroo tastes like bloody cow.... I guess they eat the same (grass). I havent had venison but again hubby says thats quite different. Maybe roo is more similar to bison?
Janette
Yeah, I would have never suspected I could have a problem with nuts. I thought, either you get anaphylatic shock, or nuts aren't a problem.
Janette
Day 10: Cranky Was very cranky this morning. Told the baby I hate my life. Mentally smacked my inner cheerleader for reminding me my life is awesome. It was not pretty! Had a decent nap and felt much better. Helped out a friend and felt better still. Good therapy, that. Hubby is annoyed that he's already lost 6 pounds (he's been trying to not be skinny his whole life). I'm trying to be sympathetic but it's just such a foreign concept to me. (He's looking all cut and gorgeous to me!) He says he'll give it one more week and if he's still losing weight, he'll quit. I've been telling him all week he's not eating enough, and that he should rarely be hungry. He's finally listening! Food Meal 1: Hash (Turkey, sweet potatoes, kale, broth, gelatin, chinese five spice), Green smoothie (coconut milk, kale, cinnamon, little bit of chia) Snack: Salmon, bell peppers Lunch: pate, cucumber (really regretted that!), coconut manna, berries Dinner: Chicken fajitas with guacamole, rolled in butter lettuce Activity Brisk 3km walk Mood Terrible giving way to good Sleep 10 - 5:30, 5 wake ups. Nap 2 - 3. Gratitude I'm grateful my hubby holds down the fort while I go do favors for people. I really couldn't without his help. I'm grateful my baby doesn't yet understand what I'm saying! I'm grateful my family puts up with me even when I'm grumpy. I'm grateful that the is a finite number of teeth my baby will get.
