No reaction to reintroduced food...so...

Recommended Posts

Finished Whole 30 on Friday and am into the reintro phase.  Ate legumes yesterday, (chili with lentils and beans)  with no bad side effects at all.. as a matter of fact I feel amazing!  I'm back on Whole 30 today and tomorrow with Non Gluten Grains slated for Tuesday followed by Dairy on Friday and finally Gluten Monday week.  My question is this. Now that I'm certain that Legumes are not inflammatory for me can I keep them in my diet throughout the rest of the reintroduction? (that leftover chili is calling to me) and if NG Grains and Dairy prove equally symptomless can they remain on the menu as well?

Thanks Whole Food Hive!

No, you only reintroduce one thing at a time, even if you don't feel you've had any reaction to the things you've already reintroduced.

This is because, even if legumes in your meals today didn't bother you, it's possible that if you continued eating them, you could hit a point where they do -- sometimes small amounts of something are okay, but something in them builds up in your system if you continue to have them every day, and you start to notice issues. If you continue eating your chili, and you do your other reintros, you won't know for sure if a reaction is to, say, non-gluten grains, or if it's because you've had enough legumes that you are starting to see a reaction to them.

Chili usually freezes pretty well, set it aside and wait until you're done with your reintroductions.

So, have one item, but for the next two days do NOT eat that item, only W30, correct?

Right. Have the thing you're reintroducing at each meal that day, then back to whole30 for at least two days (longer if you still have noticeable symptoms). And then don't have the reintroduced group again until you're completely done with reintroductions.

Thanks much. I messed up. I reintroduced gluten  free Ezechiel bread and oatmeal, but had one or the other each day. Today I had a slice of the bread with a sprinkle of honey at breakfast. What do you recommend for me to do? This would be my Day 4 in the reintroduction phase.

If it’s possible for a food to bother you if you continue eating it then why is reintroduction of a food group only one day? Wouldn’t it be more effective to see the true result of that food if you ate it over 2 or 3 days?

The reintroduction as whole30 describes it is good for learning about major, immediate reactions. It's also quick and easy to follow. It's basically a good basic reintro for most people. You are absolutely welcome to do more in-depth reintroductions, many people do, but since what each individual is looking for is different, it could be hard to describe a plan that would cover everything everyone might want to test.
