July 17 Day 1 and I miss chewing gum!

Today is my first day. I’m OK with the food—it’s not too far removed from my usual. I’m reading labels trying to find bacon that is not trimmed in gold, considering the cost and I must say I’m missing gum. I play Pickleball and my mouth sure gets dry. Gum was my go to after I quit smoking 30 years ago and my mouth moisture for years and years of exercise. And it keeps gums healthy because the tissue doesn’t dry out. Guess I’ll become a water addict unless someone knows of an allowable gum.

One option is to make your own gum at home, skipping any added sweetener. These generally start with a base of natural beeswax and work up from there, but it might take a bit of trial and error to come up with something that works well for you since basically every recipe I've found for homemade gum includes some kind of sweetener.

This could maybe be an option, if you need something ready-to-chew... it's the sap of a tree, though, so while it's Paleo-friendly I can't say for certain that it's Whole30-compliant. You'd need an official word on that one. Here's a little more info about it:

I would encourage you to try upping your water intake rather than finding a gum substitute, although I suppose if you find one or make one that has no sweeteners or other non-compliant ingredients, it's okay to have.

The thing is, chewing is the start of the digestive process, so when you chew, you send signals to the rest of the digestive tract to get ready for incoming food to deal with. So the stomach starts producing acid to deal with food, but then there's nothing for that acid to do, so it's just there, and doing this over and over can, over time, lead to indigestion and heartburn. In general, it's best to avoid this.

If you are taking medications that lead to dry mouth and despite drinking lots of water you need something more, I know there are mouthwashes that say they help with that. Since you don't swallow mouthwash, whole30 doesn't apply, just like with toothpaste.

As for water, aim for 1/2 oz per pound of body weight, so a 120 lb person needs at least 60 oz, and then if you're sweating a lot, you'll probably need extra. If you're currently not getting this much, you may need to increase gradually.
