lindyj
I completely went off plan yesterday, because I was dealing with a serious emotional upset the evening of day 4 into day 5. When I get upset like that, I usually completely lose my appetite. At that point, I decided it was more important to just something into my stomach rather than stay whole 30 compliant. However, I'm going to continue my whole 30 and get back on track today. Maybe I'll add an extra few days on at the end to get the full benefits. On the other hand, I barely ate anything yesterday, even if it was all off plan. I had a thai iced tea that I'm pretty sure contains dairy, 5 pieces of sushi with soy sauce, and something like 10 crackers. Hang in there jessicalynn! Shake it off and applaud yourself for getting back on track!! Emotional eating is one of the hardest things for me too! My current fix is yoga. Lots of yoga, and maybe a cup of hot tea. Good luck!!! pattycake
Day 7 - yay, the first week is complete! We have been 98% compliant with Whole 30 and I'm feeling great. Yesterday was one of the most difficult days. I was grumpy all evening and short with kids and hubby and then I had dreams about feeling guilty because I ate foods that weren't part of the plan (although I can't remember what they were - just the guilt part). Today's higlights were having energy all day even though I had to go into work early for a couple hours and didn't get my usual weekend nap... and the dinner I made: pulled pork and coleslaw (leftovers for lunch tomorrow - yay). Healthy and delicious. My kids don't like coleslaw (and probably especially my Whole 30 version), so they had the pulled pork with cucumber and carrots. We all ate the dinner I made last night too. I feel good when I can make the food yummy enough for the kids to eat and I don't have to cook a separate meal. Happy Day 8 to everyone p.s., also watched "Hungry for Change" tonight - very motivating to help stay on course
penotti
Started on the 7th, struggled a bit in the beginning (even though i've been paleo already for a year) But going strong on day 7! Stepford WASP
Premade Paleo saved the day last night. The Caldo Verde and Turkey Chili (which is really like curry) were to die for.
katyroq
Two words: Roasted Cauliflower!!!! It just changed my life! I hated cooked cauliflower (however my grandma made it), raw is okay, but roasted is AMAZING! Super nutty and delicious. It's definitely my new favorite food, and totally complaint! if you haven't tried it yet, do. it. now. happy Day 7 to you all!
jessicalynn
Ugh, I ate something off plan again yesterday too. As I said, I"m going through a really tough time right now and emotional eating is hard to stop. At least the slip up was only 2 small reese's peanut butter cups and I went back to eating on plan right afterward instead of just saying, screw it. However, I'm not sure if I want to continue with my whole 30, because I've already gone off plan twice in the last few days. I don't know if now is really the right time for me to be doing this, what with the other things I"m dealing with.
kluv
Day 8 went just great. Getting ready for bed two hours after my last meal of the day on schedule. No cheats and feeling really good. Made Moroccan meatballs on Sunday and I can't get enough of them. So good. Chicken soup (totally legit) is simmering now and will be ready for tomorrow's lunch. I've been reading "It starts with food" and tons of things make more sense now. This will be a great journey. Good luck on your second week everyone!!! Melelina
Day 9 here! Yesterday went well. My appetite seems to have stabilized. My energy level has risen a bit every day. Yesterday I felt pretty good all day. My workout felt good. Still having trouble getting to sleep so I am going to see if I can find some Natural Calm that was recommended. I had one (and my first) angry moment yesterday just before supper so I am wondering if it was food-related - if I had gotten too hungry. My digestve system still seems to be wonky - taking it in but not getting rid of it the way I used to. My biggest concern right now is eating this way - you know - am I eating too much fat; too many carbs; too much food...
katyroq
Happy day 9! This week is going well. I am starting to be more comfortable with the food I'm eating, and actually enjoy it (as opposed to focusing on what I can't eat.) I also am enjoying more stable energy levels- no sugar highs or crashes. Yesterday, my workout went well, even though the temperature was only 20 degrees! Difficult things: I really don't know how much to eat. I used to eat a lot between meals and was always hungry, so I tend toward eating less at mealtime, and then just eating again if I get hungry. So at mealtimes now, I don't know if I should force myself to eat more so that I don't get hungry and need a snack later, or do I assume that when my stomach feels full, it really is? what I'm trying to say is, my stomach always feels really full, and I can't tell if it's just getting used to the type of food, or it's genuinely full. Sleep. I'm still having trouble getting to sleep at night, even though I'm tired. And I keep waking up progressively earlier. Last night I tried to go to bed around 10, but couldn't fall asleep until after midnight. Then I woke up at 6:15am this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. I slept well and feel rested, so I guess it's okay. I am just used to sleeping 8-9 hours, and 6 really doesn't seem like enough!
kwg
Help! I can't stop the negative self talk. Haven't gone off plan and am very happy with my eating, cooking and feeling full. However, I can't stop looking at how bad my body looks. It's almost like when I paid no attention to what I ate, and no attention to how I looked, I was happy. (sort of). But now that I've made a decision to focus on me and my eating, and exercising I can't stand looking at myself and how I look. I am mean in my self talk, and am so disgusted. I would never share those thoughts with husband and more importantly daughters, but I know that what I am doing is destructive. How do I change? Any advice fellow Jan 7 starters? kwg
I know the BEST thing is how good I feel and how I am treating my body with the respect it deserves after a long time neglecting it. Melelina
What about replacing every negative comment with a positive one - and saying it out loud to yourself? (I find saying it out loud has more impact than just saying it in your head.) The comment should be one that you would say to a friend - 'cause your body should be your friend. I have heard the quote "You and your body are on this road together. Why not hold hands?" Help! I can't stop the negative self talk. melliemoo
Hey there! I've been AWOL just due to a busy weekend with two small kids, and feeling under the weather. But I'm on day 8 today and starting to feel much better. My sleep has been better although I am still feeling really fatigued, but that could be due to my cold. Headaches are greatly improved. Overall my stomach is doing much better, although I've still had a couple bouts of diarrhea, I'm guessing from raisins? That was the one thing I had in common with both meals that upset my stomach. Not to be TMI but I am normally very gassy, and I have had litte to no gas since starting. Hang in there everyone - it's supposed to get better from here, right? kwg
DAY 10 and I would pay at least $100 cash for a Mellow Mushroom house pizza. OK. Think a couple of things: 1. a moment on the lips; forever on the hips 2. How would you feel after you ate it? Guilty? Bloated? Worth it? Probably not. 3. You would have to start your Whole 30 all over again....ugh 3. Make all of your favorite toppings that go on it; and put it on a bed of lettuce (minus the cheese). Does that help? Hang in there. melliemoo
I hear you. I made pizza for my boys last night and kept eying it, but didn't have any. I just ordered a Sodastream. If you have any tips for flavoring, let me know! Day 9 (and a half) for me today. Still feeling really run down, but I have been sick with sinus/headache crap. I swear that my stomach doesn't look so bloated though!
kluv
Day 10 is going great so far. Brought my lunch to work (like I do now every day) but a last minute lunch invite with co-workers has me not eating what I brought. Nonetheless, I already looked up the menu where we are going and have a plan in mind for my meal. And it will be delicious without raising many questions. Also, going out to dinner with friends tonight. We were originally going to a tapas place (booked before starting Whole30) so I asked the group if they wouldn't mind changing the venue to one I selected (same general location so still convenient for everyone and much more Whole30 friendly). Everyone was fine with it and I also have a plan for that. Another plus? Going out to lunch today means I don't have to pack a lunch for tomorrow Keep it up Jan 7 starters!!! tellytelly
Here it is: http://www.theclothe...ccan-meatballs/ If you haven't bookemaked this blog, you absolutely have to. Or better yet, buy her book "Well Fed". It's a HUGE favourite of mine. She gives some really great instructions for how to prepare your meals ahead of time (running your kitchen like a restaurant as she says). I've been totally enjoying my food & not really missing too much. With two little one's huddled at my feet the minute I get home from work, I need to think quick & be prepared. "Well Fed" has helped me whip up healthy, quick & super yummy dinners on crazy week nights. P.S. My kids eat healthy but I'm not prepared to commit them to the Whole30 at this age (1 & 2 1/2) so I usually make some brown rice pasta or quinoa on the side for them. I know lots of people get the whole family on board for a Whole30 but I still can't get past not giving them grains (and neither can their naturopath). How are those of you with young kids dealing with this?
melliemoo
Telly, my boys are 2 and 6. The 2-year old is an incredibly picky eater with a very limited diet, so I'm not going to mess with him. My older son is a great eater, so I have been feeding him whatever I eat for dinner, but for lunch and breakfast he can have what he wants. He's a very healthy eater overall so I'm not too concerned about him. And yes, "Well Fed" is awesome. The grilled chicken breasts are amazing! I want to try the meatballs, but I will use beef instead of lamb. Not a big lamb fan. I really don't like the taste of grass-fed beef, it seems to gamey for me. What is everyone else eating for beef? Also, I found a CSA that delivers, and you have some capability to customize what you get. I signed up for a small basket every two weeks, for $25 per basket. micheritch
Hi all! New to the thread, but my husband and I started our first Whole30 on January 7th with you all! So far the first week+ has gone as well as can be expected. Strangely I thought I would have amuch harder time with the program (specifically the dairy and sugar) than my husband who has never been a sweets person, eats generally well all the time and is in great physical shape. I, on the other hand, LOVE sweets, workout frequently but still have 25-30 pouinds I would love to get rid of. He has been a complete bear since we started this. He is typically very mild mannered and sweet. Needless to say, the "Kill All the Things" stage hit him full force last week. Hopefully he is coming out of that. I think I am in the sleepy stage right now, I yawned the whole drive to work today.
Melelina
Is anyone seeing any difference at all in their body composition or in how their clothes are fitting? I am not. And now, after reading one of Tom's posts about fat, I am thinking I have been eating way too much fat. I have been making it a priority in my meals but now I am just more confused.
