I keep thinking I should just give up...

Recommended Posts

Sorry to hear you're feeling so pants.

It could be part of the healing process I guess? Like a healing crisis or something like that. It affects some people differently to others.

Because of the ED issues, I am a bit concerned you might be attached to the juicing because it's very low calorie.....do correct me if I'm wrong and I do realise that I don't know you and am only looking on an internet forum, but I do have problems with disordered eating/binge eating myself so I'm just going on my own experience here....is it a way to limit calorie intake, because I see that despite being advised to try and give the juices a rest, you seem resistant to that. I get that you aren't drinking commercial juices and the fibre is retained etc, but I wondered why the big resistance to changing/mixing it up a bit?

Might just be food for thought....only you know, I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but I am struggling to let go myself of the worrying about calories/gaining weight etc when not logging food, counting calories etc and I wonder if you've kind of stumbled on another "control mechanism" with the juice.

I do hope you feel better soon.

On tapatalk right now so I can't "like" above post, but I actually want to "love" it. :)

I used to be a raw foodist so made a lot of green vegetable juices and green vegetable smoothies in the Vitamix. There is, however, a school of thought that reckons that green smoothies are quite hard for the body to deal with. As you say the fibre is not removed, it's all there and your body has to process it but it arrived in liquid form not solid food so your body is totally unprepared for it. When we chew and eat veg, the saliva in the mouth starts the digestive process and warns our stomach what's coming. when we drink liguids, this doesn't happen. So the stomach suddenly realises it doesn't just have liquid it has fibre in it and, apparantly, it's more difficult for the stomach to process this.

Now, I'm not a scientist, so I can't vouch if this is true or not but I felt it made sense when I read it and I was really surprised that I actually felt better when I gave up the smoothies and started eating all my food. Why not just give it a try and see how you get on without them. If after the W30 you decide you really prefer having them then go ahead, you'll have a clearer picture of how you feel with them and without. Is there any reason you really can't do this?

I seem to remember the Hartwigs talking about SMOOTHIES being bad in a different section of ISWF. I would think the vitamix juices you're making would fall under that category and not necessarily the "jucing" category. I couldn't find that section quickly in my book but I thought someone might remember where it was or be able to search for it if they had the book on Kindle. It might be helpful in explaining why even juicing with a vitamix would be causing a problem.

Pandagirl and Emily - thank you for your kind words

I'm only holding onto the juice because I FINALLY found a way that I can get veggies in - otherwise I wouldn't eat very manyl ... I'm open to tyring anything but I literally can't force myself to eat things I dispise - my gag reflex is super sensitive.

Also, my mom has cancer and our natropath and my nutritionist along with all of the cancer books that I've read strongly recommend juice for cancer prevention and to decrease symptom and chances of reoccurrance ...

Hello Chelle,

Guessing you are frustrated and so wanting to feel vitality and hope. With being so disaplined and successful at adhering to the whole 30, you must also be dissapointed and disheartened. I hear alot of interesting advice and lot's of lovely empathy for you dear one. One thing that sprung out for me was when you said that you did not have regular bm's. This could be really important, perhpas your body is really struggling with a new way of eating. I know that when the content of the bowel stays inside for too long, you begin to reabsorb the amines and other toxins that would be better off out of you! Would you consider using a laxative? Under normal conditions I would recommend Lactulose. This could be a problem as these are sugars..and although your body does not absorb these,so no effect on insulin..it may be too much for the taste buds and could trigger binging/craving. So alternatively an appropriately high dose of magnesium and high dose vitamin C could be really useful. The magnesium could be really useful for muscle pain and also mood regulation and vitmain C ..well it's ubiquitous. The vitamins are more harsh, whereas lactulose is gentle and helps the body to reequilibrate. Also the sugars anr preferred by the bacteria that breakdown cellulose in the bowel and thus can help to increase the bacterial flora that you need to start breaking down all that veggie matter. Hoe this is somehow helpful,

Sarah :-)

Sarah has a good point there. I agree about the lactulose, it does taste quite sweet, but also at the same time quite gross, so for me it tends to put me off eating rather than the other way round! I have Miralax every day, because I have a colon stricture, which tastes pretty grim, and I do also use the magnesium and high dose vitamin c as Sarah suggested. You may only need the magnesium and c if you don't have an underlying condition that might cause the sluggish bowel, so definitely a good idea to give it a whirl. If it persists, I'd see if you can get some Miralax from the doctor.

Oh and probiotics may "help things along" too.

Yes Pandagirl..its sickly sweet, I agree..not something to get excited about..!! Good idea about the probiotics too..just check ingredients are whole 30 aproved..many have lactose in them. However I realise that lactose is one of the main ingredients in lactulose. The good thing about the lactulose is it is a pre-biotic..it feeds the "good" bacteria in the gut and slowly over time will help to regulate your bm... but will be no good if you are lactose intolerant and from this perspective I imagine it is not whole 30 approved. Chelle..if you are going to use vitamin C with the intention of bowel cleansing, you will need to titrate up to a dose that is effective for you... it can take up to 1500-3000mg to reach bowel tolerance and we are all different in how much our bowels will tolerate. I don't recommend that you use this more than a few times..only once a week if things are really blocked up and you are feeling toxic as it will cause diarrhea and that can unbalance things and you will loose water and minerals. The same with magnesium, use one or the other not both..and for magnesium use a product that is approved for this purpose, I worry that if you just start popping extra vitamins at any time as you may unbalance your minerals and you want to get them all balanced for optimal physiological functioning ..ideally you want to get your diet to a point that your bowels love!! This will take time and it is important that you ensure plenty of fibre and water..you may like to try a spoonfull of psyllium..in a large glass of water too, before bed and first thing in the morning..this will gently massgae the inside of your IT and help to cleanse on the way down. Look at all this from a long term perspective..I do like the suggestion of really experimenting with many different veggies too..different greens, zuccini, fennel, snow peas, cucumber, avocado, tomato, mushrooms, and also yummy marinades to make the meats succulent and delicious and herbs for dressings and scattered in the salads. I love the http://nomnompaleo.com/ blog, the pictures are fabulous and mouth watering and the recipies are winners..just leave out ingredients that are not whole30 approved. And some fruit will help your bowel..apples have pectin which is great for the bowel. Also ginger is lovely grated into any tea you like or on it's own in hot water and aloe vera is lovely for the gut..glutamine too is a gut healer. I would suggest that you see a naturopath as making such big changes can be a shock to the system and it is lovely to have someone to guide you. Look at it from the perspective that you are wanting your body and mind to flourish and you want to nurture and nourish yourself through a sense of self love, not to change yourself becuase you're not good enough. If you want a buddy..I am happy to be there too:-)x

oh dear, ladies. Laxatives are not the answer, and certainly not for someone with a history of eating disorders!

If you are having trouble digesting and eliminating, drink more water, eat more vegetable matter (not juice, actual veggies), take digestive enzymes before meals, maybe a magnesium supplement could be helpful...but we are working on letting the body settle to a healthy self-sufficient place. Laxatives don't do that, they artificially stimulate the bowel and can create an awful cycle of dependency. Please don't do it. I know this is tough, but I still feel pretty strongly that just embracing the plan (not second-guessing it) and giving yourself time and compassion will get you where you want to be. You have gotten so far already, you're doing an amazing job, I just know you can keep on doing it.

Hi Chelle,

I just wanted to add a big hug for you and a thought or two (not related to juicing!). You mentioned that you had struggled with depression and also that your mom has cancer. I'm so sorry that you are going through this! This kind of stress can definitely cause the symptoms that you have mentioned as well. I think it's really good that you are doing a Whole30 --it is a healthy choice no matter what-- but sometimes even healthy eating can't make up for major life stresses. I hope you can be gentle with yourself and be kind to yourself and just do the best that you can with this Whole30. Bingeing definitely won't make you feel better in the long run, it's true, but sometimes such a dramatic change in eating during a very stressful time can just be too much. Stressing about what you're eating is just more stress. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself -- body and mind. It is awesome that you've made it so far!

More hugs to you!!

Tami

The fact that the juicing is so hard to let go of may be a sign that it's the thing you need to let go of the most. I'm that way with chocolate. I tell myself plenty of things when I'm not on a W30 about how just this one piece is fine, it's not that much sugar, it has ingredients that are good for me! And in no time, I'm eating a whole bar a day because I'm stressed at work.

Who wants to need something to that extent? If you stop juicing for 15 days and eat vegetables instead, is that going to give you cancer? I'm fairly sure you don't believe that's true.

Branching out in veggie choices is one of the unexpected side benefits of doing this.

Other than kale, spinach, and onions, what have you tried or do you like? Maybe we can recommend recipes.

I also had huge hormonal problems on my first W30. I have hormone-related vertigo. Most of the time, I would get vertigo around my period. It would last a day or two and was mostly manageable. Three days after I started W30, I had THE WORST vertigo I have ever had in my life. Literally knocked me on my ass. I couldn't stand up, I stumbled like a drunk if I tried to walk, I was nauseous. If I moved AT ALL the world spun so fast that I couldn't actually see anything. It was a few days before I could really walk anywhere, and the vertigo didn't go away on its own. New crystals had formed in my ears and I had to see a specialist to position them so they'd stop giving me spells.

And I spotted. And my period showed up early.

And I was already a low-carb eater.

So the fact that you're having hormone shifts is evidence that W30 IS having an effect on you, even though it feels like complete crap at the moment.

Oh, I totally agree with this! I'm sure for some they are fine. But if you have a sensitive GI tract, as I do, green smoothies are not a good option. I would drink them and be so bloated I looked pregnant. They also had the very negative side effect of, erm..stopping me up. Cooked veggies are much easier to pass. At least for me.
