EileenRBe
This Saturday I'm planning to help make food for a good friend's wedding reception and also of course attend the reception. I'm highly motivated, but am concerned about slipping up and tasting, being asked to taste, and being tempted. It wouldn't seem like such a difficult prospect if we were just attending because it's hors d'oeuvres only, I'm pretty sure there'll be veggies, and we can eat beforehand. I'd be grateful for any tips to stay on track.
Michaela Elmore Cogswell
Definitely more challenging but you can do it. I would contact whoever is going to be in charge and let them know in advance that you won't be able to taste anything that is off your meal plan but can still help in every other way. Beyond that eating in advance and then throw some snacks in your purse in case you get hungry at the event.
Kirsteen
Definitely a challenge but the fact that you're thinking and planning ahead is over half the battle. when you're preparing food there's nothing wrong with saying to someone else, 'Can you taste this, is the seasoning right etc?' People'll just presume you want a second opinion. Yep, eat before you go, take snacks with you and have something delicious and easy to heat up ready at home. It's easier to resist temptation when you know there's something good waiting for you. good luck.
EileenRBe
Thanks for the ideas and encouragement. Also. I'm thinking about volunteering to do dishes. That could keep me out of trouble!
EileenRBe
So follow-up: Before going over for wedding reception prep I was determined to do battle against temptation and mindlessness, so I put on my army-green cargo pants just as a reminder. I ended up not being around the food much at all. But one time when walking through the kitchen I saw a bowl that had had chocolate mousse in it. My first impulse was to run my finger through it and taste, but I did not. I was given the job of ironing tablecloths. Perfect! During prep I checked ingredients. Most of the items were completely off limits but I thought I might be able to eat a strawberry if the chocolate came off cleanly and a shrimp if I could knock off the cocktail sauce. At the reception I took one of each and found that the chocolate was on the strawberry for keeps and the shrimp, while not submerged was marinating in the sauce. In the trash they went. I sipped decaf coffee, which was fine--I love coffee. I had eaten really well all day so there was no hunger to tempt me to nibble. I had a good time without the food. Thanks again Kirsteen and Michaela. Hooray. Day 8 is in the bag.
