MamaDrew
Can anyone tell me exactly what nightshades are and why they are to be avoided? I know eggplant is one but I don't know all the others. Do they cause inflammation?

MamaDrew
Well that is depressing! lol. I love peppers, tomatos and eggplant, they are supposed to be healthy!
Stepford WASP
Not for those of us with systemic inflammation. ): I could easily give them all up, but peppers breaks my heart. I can feel it in my hips at night if I ate nightshades.

praxisproject
If you can't have nightshades, there are some great lists of spices and things to replace chili. Zucchini is a pretty good replacement for eggplant in many dishes.
Michelle Berriedale-Johnson
The full list is bell peppers, chillis, tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines (eggplant) - plus tobacco, belladonna, henbane and mandrake! Not that you are likely to meet the last three in your average food supermarket!! We have a number of articles in the 'nightshade' section of our FoodsMatter site (http://www.foodsmatter.com/allergy_intolerance/nightshade/index_nightshade.html) which you might find helpful - and it is quite scary to see what devastation a sensitivity to potato can wreak!! Arthritis, asthma, depression, anxiety, migraine..... However, do not despair - there are lots of alternatives. As praxiproject says, zucchini is a good replacement for eggplant while many of the other root vegetables (sweet potato, celeriac, parsnips etc) do a great job as potato substitutes. The trickier one is tomatoes as they do crop up in so many dishes. However, puréed carrots and beets with a touch of sugar and a hint of vinegar or lemon jucie do quite a good job as substitutes. If you are looking for some recipes ideas, we have a big 'freefrom', allergen-free recipe site on which we have lots of nightshade-free recipes - all of which are marked up with what they are 'freefrom'. See http://www.freefromrecipesmatter.com/ Good luck with your diet!
