Crabbers
I'm 21 days into my first whole30 and when I started I looked through the inactive ingredients in my fish oil/Zyrtec/prenatal vitamin etc. and replaced with compliant versions where necessary. I could not find an allergy medicine without lactose so I just stopped taking it. This has not been a problem until a few days ago when, due to our mild winter, all the pine trees started releasing pollen and all my allergy symptoms returned (bags under eyes, postnasal drip, sniffles). Will resuming the Zyrtec mess up my whole30? I think I might have some lactose problems because when I was in college I stopped eating meat and developed classic lactose intolerance symptoms, which resolved themselves (as much as I could tell on a SAD) once I started eating meat again. Also, I have chronically mild asthma so I'm worried that if my allergies keep acting up I will have more trouble than usual breathing during exercise (which I have not noticed an improvement with yet anyway). I know I do have a pine allergy due to allergy testing (I received weekly shots for a few years but weaned off of them in 2011). Thanks!
Moderators Tom Denham Posted January 18, 2013 Moderators Share Posted January 18, 2013 We don't generally object to ingredients in medications. I don't think the volumes involved in these drugs would be enough to worry about. I'm not absolutely certain, but unless you don't have a good experience with your Whole30, I would not worry about it.

micheritch
Thanks for posting this! I never would have even thought of looking at my Zyrtec for non-compliant ingredients. I am also glad to see that I dont have to get rid of my pets to stay with my Whole30.
LibLady
I checked all my stuff before starting, ditched what I decided I could do without for 30 days, found replacements for some, and kept taking what I had to have like thyroid medication. Also, anything your doctor prescribes trumps Whole30.

megalinity!
Thanks for this. I realized that my Allegra has cellulose, and given the harsh winter we've had in Iowa, I decided not to take it even though my allergies have always included winter. I figured I'd just give it one day to see how I felt. Welp, I still have allergies! I'm sniffy, and sneezy today. Back to Allegra then!
HedyF
Great news! I first was concerned because I hadn't thought to check my allergy medicine and was afraid I had to stop taking it during this high allergy season!
