How do we start?

My husband and I are thinking about starting the Whole30 plan, but we're not sure how to start. I'm 50 and have high cholesterol, and I really, REALLY don't want to take statins. He's 54, and has colon issues that require high fiber intake. In addition, we live in a very, very small town with no Whole Foods or other markets readily available. Essentially, we have Walmart and that's about it.

Any advice for how we get started?

Thank you in advance!

Linda

Here's our first question, LOL...we live in southeast Missouri, and wild hogs are everywhere. We have property where we can readily shoot them, and the state encourages it! I read that pork is off-limits, but does that include wild pork?

We also eat a lot of venison since my husband bags at least one buck during deer season. That sounds like its okay and in fact desirable.

What about wild turkey?

Pork is not off limits if it's from a good source and not highly processed/cured/ full of junk...I'm thinking your wild hogs & wild turkey are gonna be a clean source of meat...especially if you are killing it yourself...that's awesome! :D

Linda,

I'm in Southwest Missouri, so if you get a hog or two, you can send one my way ;0)

Pork is definitely not off limits, but we advise people to consume it cautiously as commercially farmed pigs are kept in some of the worst conditions, and are among the least healthy animals, in the factory farming system. Wild pigs, on the other hand, are right on the money. So are wild turkeys. Really, anything wild (except maybe wild cupcakes...)

Next question: because of our ages, and because I already have high cholesterol, we ate concerned about the impact of red meats on our cholesterol. I see the testimonials about the positive impact in cholesterol, but wondered if there is a specific plan/modification just to address that issue.

Oh and what about caffeine? He's a coffee drinker but I can't stand the stuff - I'm addicted to dirt mountain dew!

My husband did the Caveman Diet years ago and really liked it, so I'm intrigued and excited to give this a go.

Linda,

Caffeine is not off limits. However, mountain dew certainly is. :)

I'll let some of the more science-minded folks answer your cholesterol questions, but I can tell you that my hubby lowered his cholesterol following the plan. Mine is a little more stubborn, but my ratios are good and I have no other markers for heart trouble so I'm not too concerned.

Best of luck! If you haven't spent time on the Whole9 blog, I highly recommend it. Many, many of your questions will be answered there.

Can't wait to hear those science folks chime in on the cholesterol issue.

I want to talk to my doctor, but I'm afraid she's not going to like the fact that I refuse to take any more statins. I took them for two months and I gained so much weight I couldn't stand it. Besides, I went on line and found so many horror stories about them...I'd rather do something...just about ANYTHING...to avoid going on a bunch of medications.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice. We've started some shopping and this weekend I plan to go through my cabinets and get rid of the unhealthy things.

A way around it with your doctor, is to tell them you want to try a nutritional approach and ask if they will monitor you through it. That way they feel involved and you have the comfort of knowing your doctor is tracking things.
