ShellPT
I am very excited to have started the Whole30! I was very surprised to have headaches the first couple of days but as of today, day 3, they don't seem as bad. I have noticed that I have cravings to eat but realize, I am not actually hungry. Just the thought of food sounds good. While at farmer's market yesterday, I talked with a local chef of a small, take-out restaurant and she said she could customize meals that would fit into the Whole30 program for me. Good to know when I am too tired to cook at night! Anyone else with the same start date?

dawner
Yes! I started 1/30, I also agree about the headaches, woke up with one yday, today very slight but went away early. I'm starting to get used to it with the food which is making me excited but I have a feeling "this too shall pass". I'm committed! Hope we can share some stories as we go along! It is nice to know that I am not alone with the headaches! Today has been much better in terms of headaches. The past couple of nights I have had dreams about sweets! I was eating frosting off a cupcake and panicked because I forgot I was doing the Whole30. I usually don't like frosting either! I looked forward to sharing stories with you, along our journey! dawner
Holy cow, I had a dream last night that I ate a bagel w cream cheese and almost had milk then remembered I was doing the Whole30, in my dream I was SO mad I had to start over!! So....that means its just a reminder for me that I do NOT want to start over!! Makes the commitment easier I think. I do have a little cold now and it was nice to read that this normal within the first week. I shopped at a place near me that sells only grass fed meats, I'm so excited about this! I've been chopping and cooking all weekend to prepare for the busy week ahead. Keep up the good work, let's stay in touch! My breakfast was an amazing butternut squash, grass fed pork sausage w apples, onions & spinach, YUM!

The dreams have stopped for me, so that is good. Sorry to hear about your cold! Have you tried making the bone broth? I've done chicken and beef so far and they came out good. Your breakfast sounds amazing! I'm trying to find some grass fed pork sausage locally, but no luck yet. Hope you are feeling better!
dawner
I did make the bone broth, it was a little watery because I didn't use enough bones, but it was soothing. It turned out to be a sinus infection and start of an ear infection. On the mend w an antibiotic. In day 7 and the cravings are finally starting to subside. I like the food thus far, of course the things I like to try are time consuming, but when I stay focused on reading about it and trying new recipes and changing it up then I seem to be more interested in staying on it. Mashed sweet potatoes with coconut milk, ghee, cinnamon & nutmeg are SO yummy! Also a recipe I found for pumpkin oatmeal is delicious! Both things taste like there is sugar in them. Let me know if u want the oatmeal I will figure out how to post it. Or maybe you can search the forum. Let me know! Hang in there!!
ShellPT
Woo hoo! We made it a week! Cravings are less and I don't feel that I need to eat as often. Preparing meals has been time consuming but I love cooking so it is nice. I am currently off work for another 1 1/2 weeks so it has been okay but I will really have to prepare when I am back at work full time. I love trying all the new recipes as well. The deconstructed pizza from it ISWF is super yummy. I tried making the no-fuss salmon cakes (didn't have all the ingredients and had to improvise) and they didn't turn out well. I am going to try again this week. Pumpkin oatmeal sounds amazing! I will try and search for it but if you are able to post it, let me know! Hope all is going well with you!!! dawner
I know one week is huge! It is Day 9 and my cravings are definitely subsiding and yes I'm full without hunger between meals, yippee! I feel over the hump. I have to try the deconstructed pizza sounds good! The pumpkin oatmeal is Paleo approved maybe Whole 30 without the dates. I've lost 8 pounds in 10 days the only reason I got on a scale was cause I had to go to the doctor, otherwise I'm ok with not wanting to know. My jeans are getting less snug I'm having a dinner party Saturday and keeping on track making some Whole30 versions for myself. It's easy w spaghetti, sausage & peppers just by making my own marinara and using spaghetti squash and salad oh and grass fed Italian sausage. I am making a dessert ill have to pass on but I feel confident I can do it now. Glad you're hanging in there, it's nice to share the journey! ShellPT
I found the pumpkin oatmeal recipe. I will have to try making it sometime! I have noticed that my clothes are starting to fit better. I don't have a scale at home so there is no chance of me trying to see where I am weight wise. How was your dinner party? I have gone into stores and walked by all the ice cream and desserts and only slightly crave them. I am glad the cravings are becoming less! Sounds like we are both doing well so far! I am a little stuck on what meals I want to make for the week and need to really search through some cookbooks so I am not eating the same thing week after week. I need to venture out and experiment! ShellPT
Glad to hear the dinner party went well (sorry it has been awhile since I've been on the computer)! So exciting to be headed into day 20! I am definitely feeling better and not sure that I want to stop eating this way. Although I have seen some paleo goodies that look good but I like sticking with this lifestyle change! Hope things are going well for you.
dawner
Hi! I totally meant to finish my last post and never did, I've been thinking about you, except all at inopportune times to check in! I am LOVING this too! I just started looking up things yesterday also so I don't go back to bad habits after this, I really want to keep it up for a lifestyle change as well. Don't get me wrong I do still miss sugar and some things like cheese but I do need and want to maintain the energy this is giving me and sleeping through the nights is very nice! Day 22 today, the half-way good thing is I have to have knee surgery the day after my 30 days so I won't be binging too quickly if at all! I'm thinking of going Primal after this (is that the same as Paleo?) I'll have to look at the differences. I was directed to Mark's Daily Apple which is a good site to check out. I want to be able to incorporate dark chocolate, agave nectar and some small doses of cheese sometimes, I don't miss the bread really. I do miss crackers or something that "crunches" when you eat it (besides carrots ) Although I have found an amazing tool that I got thru hearing about it on the Whole30 emails, the vegetable julienne tool, it was like $16...but I used it to julienne sweet potatoes, like it seriously strips them until very thin strings and you toss them in melted coconut oil, spread them on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with chili powder and garlic salt and bake them about 20 minutes (toss around every 5 mins) and they come out crispy and tasting amazing!!! You squeeze fresh lime juice on them, OMG it's better than popcorn for movie night!!! Try it! I also made this recipe called "Comfort Noodles" using the same tool with zucchini and eggs, sounds kind of gross but trust me, it saved me from cheating one day!!! If you can't find it let me know and I will send it to you! Keep in touch, only 8 more days!! OH also, I cater on the side and had to cater a baby shower that had a frigging candy table, beautiful yummy cupcakes, homemade donuts and chocolate covered pretzels....if I made it thru that eating raw veggies and fruit, I can make it thru anything!! (Although I did freeze a cupcake so I can eat it after my surgery LOL! ) Keep up the good work!!! Dawn
ShellPT
I miss cheese, too!!! But I can do without the bread and stuff. That is funny you mentioned the crackers or something that crunches. I was craving something crunchy the other night and remembered I had crackers hidden in the cupboard. I stared at them and had to walk away. I had hip surgery 2 weeks before starting the Whole30 and just started back to work this week. I am so glad I meal prepped on Sunday because this week has been tough! If I was going to cheat, this would have been the week. I know the 30 days ends next week but I still have recipes that are still Whole30 compliant I will stick with. Everyone asks what will be the first thing I eat and I really can't say I want sweets. I've been looking at paleo goodies but that might be the only thing sweet I try. There are a few sites that I follow: Urban Poser, Civilized Caveman Cooking Creations, Nom Nom Paleo, Clothes that Make the Girl (also have her cookbook, Well Fed) and PaleOMG. There are non Whole30 recipes that I drool over but all paleo. I must look at the vegetable julienne tool! Was that it one of the Whole30 emails? I will have to go back and look. I've made the sweet potatoes but not with chili powder and garlic...sounds yummy! I will trust you on the zucchini and eggs. Did you add seasoning to it? Good for you staying away from the candy table! Less than a week to go! Yay for us
dawner
Kuhn Rikon Julienne Peeler $19.95 - Kerekes Bakery & Restaurant Equipment Kuhn RikonJuliennePeel... $19.95 Kuhn Rikon Julienne Peeler $19.95 - Kerekes Bakery & Restaurant Equipment This is the one I got, I believe it was on the Whole30 emails. Yes the "Comfort Noodles" you saute garlic in coconut oil and then add the zucchini with s/p, after the cook a bit you move them aside and add the beaten eggs and after it sets just a little you mix the noodles into the egg, you also saute a little bit of almond meal in coconut oil to brown it and top the noodles with this, it gives it a nutty flavor. I also add a little coconut aminos which is another thing that is so delicious for stir frys and something like this. It does really doesn't sound appealing but it is delicious! SO glad to hear you got through your tough time, it feels so good to know we can get past those times without folding. I actually put cream in my coffee today (cause I totally miss it) and had one sip (ok two) and poured it out and re-filled with black coffee. I don't have any more coconut milk at work but I was so mad at myself with 2 days left so I dumped it....glad I did Yes I agree with not really wanted sweets now, this has changed for me in the last 4-5 days. I'm glad they have us do this for 30 days because you may need the full 30 to reap the benefits and see how sugar and crap really affect us. I too have printed may Paleo type recipes and sweets that I will try after this is over. I can totally see this as a lifestyle now and not just a "diet". I'm anxious to get on the scale Friday morning I have to say! Glad you're recovering from your hip surgery! Will you have to have rehab? Good luck to you!! I'll check out those websites too, there is SO much out there, I love it. 2 MORE DAYS WOOHOO!! First thing I'm having is coffee with real cream and 1 t organic sugar cane, can't wait! ShellPT
It is the last day!!! I think the comfort noodles are from the Melissa Joulwan (Well Fed). I think I saw it on her blog. I am definitely going to order the peeler and make the recipe! I've made a few of her recipes and I highly recommend her cookbook. I stopped coffee when I started the Whole30 and I miss it. That might be the first thing I have but I am afraid it will not sit well with me. I am actually thinking of extending the Whole30 for another 2 weeks. Yes, I did have to rehab my hip but I am a PT so I did my own rehab! Made things a little easier but being on the other side was difficult. I have more empathy for my patients now than I did before. I hope that your knee surgery goes well! Yay for us making it to the last day!!!
dawner
YIPPEE!! ALL done, congrats to both of us! BUT.....it did NOT go well with me eating crap the last 3 days so I too went back on it today! I am keeping the cream in my coffee but sticking to one cup a day just because I like it, not because I "need" it. Every time I ate something non-compliant to the Whole30 I felt awful. Not worth it. I am going to go back on it for a week or two and then bring back smaller doses of things little a time. And the sweets, FORGET it! Major stomach ache! I think I found what works for me and this is it! I'm staying primal for now and will continue to see what works. I think the advil every 4 hours after the knee surgery made my stomach "not ok" too so once I can slow down on that it may help a bit. Keep in touch, I'd love to still talk about what works for us, looks like we found a match for our eating habits! Good luck with your healing, my surgery was way easier so I am doing just fine Talk soon!
ShellPT
Yes, congrats!!! Things did not go well over the weekend with the reintroduction phase. I didn't feel well either and had trouble sleeping. I am amazed at how it really affects you. The second day of having dairy (and a little sugar), I felt miserable. Sunday was worse and I had some gluten. I think if I have them every once in a while, I might be okay. I have gone back to staying Whole30 compliant for the week and will maybe start with smaller doses as well. I was surprised how crappy I felt after having a little bit of sugar. Made me wonder how I did it for so long before the Whole30! Sounds like your knee surgery went well? That is great to hear! Yes, lets definitely keep in touch! dawner
Hi Michelle! Ok - so my reintroduction "phase" what a joke....I started with sugar like I said, not terrible but enough that I too felt awful, but as I start other foods, I too felt like I had cement in my stomach. I started to get Whole30 compliant again with some intentional slips to pay dearly later. It's crazy how my body is rejecting the bad stuff, I agree with you, I don't know how I did it, I used to eat SO much crap!! So....the last week or so I've been slowly going back to sugar again....I woke up that "Sugar Dragon" and it is NOT good....that being said, I have not had any of the following: Bread, pasta, dairy (except heavy cream in my coffee), cheese once, no rice, no french fries or white potatoes and I haven't even thought about this stuff, I just haven't had a taste for it I guess! CRAZY..... So I see now I have a "sugar" problem, seriously I'm addicted to it....it makes perfect sense, I am a recovered alcoholic so I believe sugar just took it's place, so I must decide if I can ever go back to sugar in small doses or have to stay away forever It's bad enough that I wake up with a headache because I eat chocolate or cookies before I go to bed - I can't stop myself! UGH! I am starting another round of Whole30 on April 1st. Some friends are joining me. Let me know if you want to join us and we can create a forum group to help each other out. Let me know how you're doing and if you would like to join us!! Where do you live?! Just curious! Have a great day Michelle! Dawn
ShellPT
Thank you!!! I am not alone! I have woken up the sugar dragon as well. I thought I could control it but nope, I can't! The reintroduction phase was bad. I went on a girls weekend trip and thought I would be okay but I had no decision in my food choices because I didn't bring food with me. It has been a mess ever since. I noticed if I have too much dairy, I get congested. I noticed that anything with soy makes me bloat and gluten makes me feel yucky. I've been bad with snacking on fruit to try and replace the sugar cravings and I don't want to depend on that. I have been thinking about starting the Whole30 again! I would love to join your group on April 1st!!! All of my family, friends and co-workers have been supportive but I definitely need support from people actually doing the Whole30. Now that I am almost cleared to do my regular exercise (running), I hope that will make some changes when I start the next round. How is your knee, by the way? I am in California. What about you? Maybe we should both start to slowly tame the sugar dragon so it is not so tough come April! Have a good one! Michelle
dawner
Oop sorry, haven't been on much, but am definitely starting April 1st! I have been TERRIBLE with the sugar...I am now back to eating sugar before bed, not sleeping well and waking up with headaches that sometimes last through the day so I guess my answer is I MUST stop the sugar Makes me sad, but the way I feel is way more important, I can't wait to sleep thru the night again. I almost talked myself out of starting because I'm going thru a lot of crummy changes in my life, but I decided that is the BEST time to do it so at least I "feel" ok thru it all. I haven't really gone back to dairy, I only had cheese maybe 3-5 times and no milk which is crazy, I loved skim milk! I do put heavy whipping cream in my coffee....but I'm surprised at my cheese intake. Grains, bread & pasta not too bad although it's starting to creep in slowly. My knee is good but I haven't started exercising at all yet and that is NOT helping me....hard to fit it in but I must try....glad this is making me accountable, thank you.... This is the forum that somebody started that are all starting April 1st. See if you can get plugged into it and hopefully we will have a little group of peeps to bounce things off of and support each other. Let me know if this works and see if you can add yourself to it. http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/8503-starting-41-whos-in/page__gopid__84367#entry84367 I will keep checking this one between the two of us too just in case. I'm ready to get rid of the roaring dragon again!! I am in Chicago, spring is coming and I am VERY excited about cycling this summer and maybe a "little" running Doc says I will def need knee replacements but if I run or don't run won't change that, only push it up a year or so if I do run. But I'm only 43 so I'm not ready to give it up completely but will be mindful of it Have a great day, look forward to hearing from you before we start! ShellPT
I will check out the forum and add myself to it. I am ready to start again. I have been trying to stay away from sugar but it has been difficult. I think if I have the support of others (through the forum), it will keep me accountable. Hopefully it will help you to get through the crummy stuff you are experiencing (sorry to hear about that ). I was just in Chicago a couple weeks ago!!! First time there and it was fun, for the limited amount of time I was there. Knee replacements don't sound fun! You are too young for that!!! So glad that we are both starting again and will have others to get ideas from! Talk with you soon! Michelle
dawner
Hey! Glad you had fun in Chicago, great place for that I'm having slight headaches so far but really trying to power through the sugar cravings. I am finding this easier this time around, are you? I think I know what to expect and what to eat but I definitely am not leaving enough time for meals and prep so been grabbing things on the run and probably not eating enough. Breakfast is always my best meal. I definitely don't find the slumps like I did the first week the first time, feel pretty good except for the minor headaches. Look forward to keeping this going also. My birthday is May 4th and I'm splurging a little but may go right back after for another Whole30, I truly like the lifestyle I need to make my comfort noodles again, I have a taste for them right NOW Time to get breakfast, talk to you soon!
