Joshua Woodland
Day 2 of my post Easter whole30. This will be my 3rd attempt (3rd times a charm, I hope). My first two whole30's where less than 100%successful (I refuse to say failure, because I learned something each time). The recent http://whole9life.com/2012/03/change-your-habits-part-1-the-cue/ post was very helpful in helping identify some cues for my eating habits. Most of my #$*&*^ eating habits are out of boredom and perhaps a little bit of lazyness. Another problem is my body is numb to the fullness cue. I could stuff myself during a meal and an hour later be eating again. I need to re-tune my body's awareness and perhaps slow down when I eat. So the plan while I am trying to relearn how to listen to my body is plan in advance. I am planning out at least a week ahead of time for meals, fixing plenty of food so that I have left overs to graze on. I know that that is a coping mechanism for what I said above. The plan is have plenty of whole30 food on hand so if I do find my self mindlessly grazing I make better choices, while at the same time try to recognize the "why" of when I am eating; why am I eating, am I hungry, etc. My first two attempts I felt overwhelmed. I still feel overwhelmed but I staring it down this time, hopefully with a better attack plan I will have better success.
Renee Lee
If it doesn't add to your feeling overwhelmed, you may want to try front-loading your calories (specifically your protein). Personally, I've always found it easier to stay sated through the day by doing this, and breakfast is generally the easiest meal to do every day AND add to in order to make it larger. Right now I'm doing 3 eggs and 3 homemade mini breakfast sausage patties at 7am. It works out to about 42g/protein, and that holds me until noon. Good luck! Joshua Woodland
rrawr, really craving my afternoon pepsi, usually grab a 20 oz pepsi for my afternoon pick up. I sub'd in 8oz black coffee, I'll probably need to drink some green tea w/ lemon to get me through the rest of the afternoon though. Other than that so far so good: B: 4 scrambled eggs, pan seared zucchini with homemade habenero sauce for flava, cup-o-coffee S: green apple L; locally made organic/free range brat from the meat locker up the road with kraut and stone crushed mustard S: mixed veggies with EVOO and vinegar, cup of fresh pineapple Dinner will be baked chicken and brussel sprouts
Joshua Woodland
Good God, I am really realizing that I may be a food addict. I find myself mindlessly reaching for "food" that is near by. I cheated yesterday and wasn't really until after it was in my mouth that I realized what I had done. I'm taking this out to a Whole45 and may extend further. I really have some demons to conquer. Not sure if I have the right support system around me right now. This forum is helpful, I am able to see other peoples struggles and successes. However, my family is not on board, and my co-workers always have crap to nibble on. I will need to come up with some methods to make sure I'm not putting myself into situations that lead to unconscious nibbling. The positive so far is that I am planning meals that are truly whole30 compliant/paleo. I have noticed a huge difference on how I feel after I eat. I don't feel tired and bloated, I just feel full. Though the full feeling does go away rather quickly as I've said earlier I don't have a good "off switch" when it comes to food fullness. I've also noticed I've reacted stronger to crap food when I did cheat, I was crampy and had major GI distress overnight. This is only a week into it. So I have realized to power of the Whole30. Nothing that is meant to be food should make a person react like that. I may have cheated, but I am ok with it because I am making better choices and will just need to extend this out and learn from my mistakes. danago
I appreciate your blog. The differences in how I feel w30 compliant and "cheating" are really amazing. It really is good to read other people's struggles.
Jeanye Mercer
Joshua - Sounds like you're definitely moving in the right direction. Remember the goal of a whole30 - or 45 or 7 - is to heighten awareness. The fact that you are now mindful of previous mindless eating is HUGE! Your appetite will begin to regulate itself over time. Good work!
