gattling
Hi, all, I'm on Day 7 of the W30, and so far things are going great. With respect to bacon, though, I'm really confused. I read some earlier posts, and the "manifestos", and I'm still confused. I thought I read somewhere that this brand of bacon - Applegate Naturals uncured turkey bacon - was acceptable, but now I'm not so sure. Can anyone help out? Many, many thanks, Greg
johnsona
There is maple sugar in this, so my guess is that it is out.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted February 10, 2013 Moderators Share Posted February 10, 2013 I found compliant bacon of several varieties in several local stores about 2 years ago and then, all of a sudden, every pack of bacon I checked had some form of sugar. I don't know if the manufacturers changed or the stores changed or if maybe I became a more careful label reader, but I don't even look for bacon locally anymore. gattling
/sigh In that case, I may give US Wellness a try, although having bacon isn't all *that* critical for me. Anybody know if retailers like Whole Foods or Wegman's carry sugar-free bacon?
kellyp
I haven't been able to find it at Whole Foods. The only place that I have found it is US Wellness.
Nikki Hirigoyen
crap. ive been eating trader joes peppered turkey bacon and didnt think to check for sugar. 11 days in and i'll be starting from day 1 tomorrow. bummer.
annnewjerz
Anybody know if retailers like Whole Foods or Wegman's carry sugar-free bacon? I haven't found any bacon at Wegmans or Whole Foods that's compliant. Closest at Whole Foods would be their sliced pork belly that you can fry up so it's bacon-like. Closest at Wegmans is...well...nothing. I'm on Day 29 and purchased a pack of Organic Uncured Applewood Smoked bacon that does have organic brown sugar in it. If I get the strong desire to have bacon after my Whole30 is up, that's what I'll have.
missnikka28
I asked if anyone had sugar-free bacon at the St Lawrence market in Toronto (named the world's best food market by National Geographic in April 2012), thinking that they of all places might have it, and I got laughed away like I was totally bonkers. Apparently the sugar is needed during the curing process to counteract the salt, or something to that effect.
Ann
My sister lives in Vegas, and her Whole Foods has a jalapeño bacon that is compliant (in the meat window). I'm in Portland, and haven't found any at my Whole Foods here.
Ann
Oh, and Costco has a low sodium bacon that doesn't have sugar (but it doesn't taste good enough to be worth it).
laurelpardee
I've read several recipes that tell you how to cure your own pork belly to make bacon. Anyone know how you make bacon from a turkey? Or do I have to go to Hogwarts for that?
Sherri Cole
There is no approved bacon around here. It stinks! I wish we could just get some bacon without added sugar!
Susan W
Hmm..yes there is. I make my own bacon from pork belly. U.S. Wellness has compliant bacon.
faymao
I know it's not the same, but hubby and I enjoy prosciutto and have had no problems finding compliant brands. You can fry it up or wrap it around stuff and it works the same.
Sharon Simpson Thumann
I asked if anyone had sugar-free bacon at the St Lawrence market in Toronto (named the world's best food market by National Geographic in April 2012), thinking that they of all places might have it, and I got laughed away like I was totally bonkers. I cure my own all the time without sugar.
SonyaT
To the folks who make their own: could you share your recipe? I haven't really been missing bacon but the hubby and I have been talking about making our own and think it sounds like fun!
Susan W
Sonya, it is fun. Do a bacon search and you will see a ton of recipes.
LydiaL
The closest Whole Foods to my place used to have bacon without sugar added (Beretta Farms). Now it seems that they no longer carry it and instead have the same brand but with added sugar. So annoying.
Nicole1775
Damn it, I am on day 5 and I just saw this post. I had Applegate Sunday bacon yesterday. Didn't realize it had sugar, now what? Do I start over from the beginning?
Kirsteen
Hi Nicole, if that's the only noncompliant food you've eaten, I wouldn't start over, I'd just chalk it up to a learning experience of just how careful we need to be reading labels. Don't have the noncompliant bacon again and just carry on. I doubt very much you'll have had enough to really make a difference. If, at the end of your 30 days you don't feel you've had all the results you want you can always add on a few days but I'm sure you'll be fine. good luck
