missmary
revalation this morning: I need to eat more. I need to eat more. I need to eat more. My workouts have been suffering in the morning lately (noticably so; my yoga teacher has mentioned that I seem stronger during Saturday mid-day class than Wednesday am, and I know it is because I'm just having an egg beforehand). I am notoriously bad at doing a proper post-wo meal as well. Last night, I had a "mini-meal" (lamb patty and giant slice of roasted sweet potato) around 5pm before running off to a massage appointment. When I got home I ate a fourth full meal (applegate hotdogs, sweet potato cubes, power greens, cherry tomatoes, grapes). Slept better last night. Better yoga this morning. I've been hungry in the afternoons and having bananas a lot lately, but I'm going to try doing a mini-meal mid-to-late afternoon instead, at least on days when I have a workout in the evening (Capoeira class tonight, for example). Not the official whole30 recommendation, but this is what riding your own bike is all about people. Trying to figure out what works for me: eating more. and getting massages more often, I'm thinking. Moderators LadyM Posted May 21, 2014 Moderators Share Posted May 21, 2014 Long before I found W30 I noticed that my best lifting always happened in the afternoon and figured out that of course it had everything to do with fuel and having had two meals under my belt. You're wonderful at self discovery and adjusting accordingly. Bravo!
Nadia B
Mary, you are fearless. Truly. So inspiring. Also - Capoeira? Is it an inspired class or a real deal thing with obligation to play music and stuff?
missmary
Also - Capoeira? Is it an inspired class or a real deal thing with obligation to play music and stuff? It is a real deal thing. I'm still hunting for white pants, and hoping the mestre doesn't get back from his travels and see me in class without them (not pantless, mind you, but this place frowns on black yoga pants for some reason ). I am a prodigy at the music part , but struggling mightily at the tumbling/fighting.
missmary
hi. MIA lately with two big deadlines at work tomorrow. Still eating fine (packing breakfast, lunch and dinner for work every day). Still getting in the workouts. except today, where I went into the office at 5am instead. ugh. 16 hours at work today but too wired to just go to bed already now that I am home. I will get through it. Tomorrow is my birthday. Two deadlines on my birthday and I think the guys working for me on these deadlines feel worse about it than i do. I guess my birthday doesn't really mean that much to me anymore? not a big deal. A co-worker is making something for me.-some sort of treat to substitute for the cupcakes they usually do. I'm quite curious. I'm guessing it will be a tasty paleofied sweet treat of some sort-she has done the whole30, so she knows my restrictions, but she also knows I'm not doing an official whole30 at the moment. It will be SWYPO, I'm sure, but I will eat it. Wish me luck tomorrow. There is one part of one of the deliverables that could be submitted on Monday morning...the sort of thing where if I don't pull the trigger on it I will be working all weekend perfecting it...please let me just finish and have a weekend off. Moderators LadyM Posted May 30, 2014 Moderators Share Posted May 30, 2014 Cheers to a happy birthday and a blissful weekend off (fingers crossed)! Can't wait to hear about what your co-worker brings--how lovely! Enjoy!
pjena
Happy birthday! Enjoy your paleofied treat and a lovely weekend. Let's hope the storms hold off so that this weekend is as lovely as last! I saw a blog post somewhere yesterday about making cupcakes out of watermelon. They used a biscuit cutter to cut slices of watermelon into rounds, put them in cupcake wrappers and topped them with whipped cream and sprinkles. I am totally doing that for my son's birthay treat for school next week! I can use coconut cream for the topping. It's so simple, it's genious. I hope your treat is as good! missmary
I guess I mis-understood that one: the treat is a purchased gluten-free apple tart thing from whole foods. It looks pretty. Not quite half-way through my list for today. Completing is still within reach.
missmary
nope. didn't finish. I didn't factor in how much of my afternoon would be taken up directing the work of other people/parts of these things. The one part that could get put off until Monday, did. Regardless, pushed send on what I could and spent the whole evening (up until midnight, a very rare occurrence for me) not at work and mostly not worried about work. Grilled fish, lovely salad with sorrel from the garden, a couple gin and tonics and some sea salt dark chocolate that may or may not have had soy lecithin (did not see the package. did not hunt for the package). Watched my good friend's sister's boy take his first steps, got very sincerely complemented on my outfit by a five year old (his sister). all in all a really sweet night. Maybe I can wrap things up this morning before yoga at noon?
missmary
ha. life. Concluded the deadlines with a big presentation yesterday, which went great. Boss decided to present everything (normally I would do a piece of it) but that is fine with me. It went smoothly. happy boss. happy client. Ended up in tears in Capoeira last night, just terrible. I think the combination of this stressful work period finally being over and some dating issues the night before/early morning yesterday just made it impossible. I kept getting turned around (kicking the wrong leg, etc.) and the teacher was correcting me and so persistant about working with me to get it right. I just got overwhelmed. embarassing. The other two people in class were much more experienced and very sympathetic but yuck. I need a break. It's my weekend off volunterring so I think I'm going to take a mini road trip for some hiking this weekend. I may or may not stop off at the outlet malls for some cute discount workout gear on the way.
pjena
I hope you are able to recharge this weekend. Sometimes life just overwhelms us and we break at the oddest time. That straw. Fingers crossed that the weather cooperates (for both of us!).
Moderators LadyM Posted June 5, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 5, 2014 Nature is the best balm for times of overwhelm. Seconded only by retail therapy. Great plan, MM! (And remember these breaking points are really opportunities for growth and strength. Sorry for the platitude, but I really mean it. I envision you coming back from your weekend fully refreshed and recharged with new insights and vivaciousness. Hooray for giving yourself exactly what you need!) missmary
wow, I haven't posted in my own log for ages. Here's the scoop: went on the backpacking weekend. Bought two pair of boys track pants at the adidas outlet (the ladies ones were a strange cut. the little boy's ones were perfect, not white, but ok red and black each with white stripes). Wore the pants to class and looked like a 10-year-old boy, which I don't mind. Fast forward a couple weeks. Went on a road trip west with my parents for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary party. Saw many relatives, almost all of whom have mobility issues and weight issues. Was judged by my obese aunt for choosing not to have a bun with my burger and selecting water as my drink. Felt bad for same aunt and others who were winded on a short hike and had to sit out a longer/steeper one. Only one comment on my weight loss (Uncle: you've lost some weight. you look good. I didn't mind that one), I'm 50 lbs lighter than last time they saw me. I in turn did not comment on weight gain and mobility loss, although it really does worry me. My parents are doing well in comparison to some others in the family. I guess I should be grateful. Then we went on a side trip to Glacier park with just my mom and dad. A little more hiking (just me and dad...and it was a little much for him while barely scratching the surface for me). I guess I need to go back with a different group if I want that. All in all dad was a trouper and did ok with a lot of up and down, etc. I'm glad I did the trip. I'm glad I'm home a day earlier than planned and can prep food and do a real workout and have a little time to breathe before going back to work on Monday. AND I have a whole new appreciation for the food options I have in my normal life. We took a cooler for the drive out to Montana but for much of the trip I was at the mercy of roadside restaurants. No way to do a whole30, that's for sure. Lots of bunless burgers with sad lettuce/tomato/pickle and more potatoes (every way possible: baked, fries, mashed, etc.) than I've eaten for a year. Most hotels had hard boiled eggs and bananas for breakfast, so with that and the carton of cherry tomatoes I carried with me, breakfast was ok, but honestly. I am blessed that I don't have a severe reaction to bad oils or tiny amounts of soy, because I don't think I could have eaten much at all otherwise. I stopped ordering salads because they would be iceberg mix (some shreds of carrot or cabbage and a mealy tomato wedge if you got lucky), and the iceberg often had a chemical aftertaste. I came home yesterday afternoon and piled my grocery cart with organic cabbage, fennel, carrots, bell peppers, radishes, red onion. Made a gigantic slaw with these and coconut oil mayo (rich with four egg yolks--both eggs were double yolked. lucky?) and a lamb burger and went back for another lamb burger and some roasted sweet potato. I'm home
Moderators LadyM Posted June 27, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 27, 2014 Double-yolked mayo is your welcome home gift from the w30 gods! It's amazing, isn't it, how badly people eat without even knowing or thinking about it? And the effects are everywhere and in our faces, but so few are willing or able to make the connections. There's little consolation in living well when those we love are suffering. It's tough. But for me it does strengthen the resolve to do what I know is right for my body. You too, it sounds like. Thanks for the inspiration. Today I'm making a big batch of slaw!
Physibeth
Sounds like you had a fabulous trip despite the challenges. I really want to get out to Glacier at some point. I've heard it is stunning! I found two eggs with double yolks in a single day this week too. Definitely lucky!
GoJo09
I don't want to sound all stalker, but I had insomnia last night and ended up reading your log from the very first post. Do you have any idea how amazing it is to read it all back to back? The 1.5 years that you were writing in here, logging your weight losses, your pants getting too big, your growth in exercise, your struggles and triumphs and how you got to a place where your fall back position was great food and health? I literally saw you shrink before my eyes! As I was reading I was thinking "Man, she got results so fast. She lost all that weight, she was able to do a chinup, there was no effort at all." And then I reminded myself that just because it only took me an hour to read, it actually took 18 months to do! Sometimes we are so focussed on the immediate result that we don't bother seeing what we could achieve if we devoted 12 weeks, 6 months, a year to health and receive the other benefits as a bonus. (Um, that is pretty stalker, sorry!)
