Helloooo! Day 1 Feb. 25th!

Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I read It Starts With Food last Sunday in one 3 hr sitting. I immediately stopped eating cheese (my addiction) and Truvia. I spent the weekend planning, shopping, and cooking.

I just finished my first meal - frittata, green tea, avocado (a 1st) and blueberries. I'm stuffed!! I'm not used to eating so soon after getting out if bed so I set a timer to ring in 45 min. When it rang, I started to prepare my breakfast.

I'm soooo ready to do this and see results. Nothing I've done in the past 4 yrs has worked. I truly believe this is the key.

Let's go!

Today is my first day too. I am a sugar addict and love bread, pasta, pretzels, sweets and CHEESE! I live in Wisconsin so cheese is pretty much a staple on everything. I'm worried I am taking on too big of a challenge, avoiding both carbs and dairy in one shot but I'm hoping to just take it day by day. I'll need lots of self-encouragement and mantras I am sure. Good luck to everyone else!

Hope everyone had a good day! I did :) I'm eating my post workout meal now but am confused on how many carbs to consume. Off I go to the message boards in search of an answer!

Jenn - Welcome to your health! and to the forum. My favorite part of this entire eating philosophy is no counting! Follow the meal planning template. Be sure you're avoiding all the avoids. Eat when you're hungry. Forget the counting! Enjoy the freedom. :)

Today is my first day as well. I've tried once before and failed 12 days in. I'm committed to making this work this time. I know that after 12 days I felt amazing! I have 2 auto-immune dieseases that I deal with and this is going to be a much better way of feeling! I started my day with a veggie omelet, lunch was homemade chicken/veggie soup and 1/2 sweet potato, a banana with almond butter in the afternoon and then salmon and broccoli and cauliflower for dinner. The hardest part of the day was not having any caffeine, but that is a trigger for me and I know once the headaches subside, I will feel great! I drank water all day, some with sliced lime and a cup of hot sleepytime tea this evening.

Hi all! Day six here (I'm a little before the 25th starters here), but glad I found people. How is everyone doing? I also see there was another thread that was started for those who started on the 25th, but it looks like a different group of people. I wonder if there is any way to merge the two threads so we can all keep track of each other with ease?

Anyhow, I'm doing realitvly well over here in CT ..... although I'm finding that my muscles are eailsly fatigued (like when running up the stairs) which is unusual for me. I heard this was because the body is getting used to finding other energy sources other than sugar. The only other issue I'm finding is that I feel "bored," because most of my socialization surrounds happy hours with friends, or dinners out with wine (or heavenly margarita). I've been using a bottle of San Pellegrino at dinners to fill my wine glass which make it feel more formal, and having a ton of herbal teas for "treats," but I do miss my cocktails. Booo. I also keep saying to myself, "at least you won't feel like crap in the morning," lol.

I wonder if any of you know if we can use condiments? I'm missing mustard, hot sauce, etc. I have the book and I don't see these items addressed at all. So far I have not used ANYTHING- I'm an all or nothing gal, so I don't cheat. And my other Q, I saw that someone posted about "missing their caffine?" I thought we were allowed to have a cup of black coffee in the morning?

Well, I hope everyone is well, I can't wait to hear how you all are doing!

Talk soon,

J

Day 5 wrap up. I am still challenged with hunger in the afternoon, sweet cravings in the evening and low grade headaches. Tonight a simple spoonful of sweet potatoes, I baked for the morning seemed heavenly. I'm thankful the weekend is here for me to try and catch up on some rest and relaxation. Oh, and get cooking for the week. I was able to purchase some local grass fed beef!!

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone!

Hi everyone,

I also started on February 25 and this has been my hardest day. Lot of work stress, then missing my Friday night glass of wine. I've noticed a couple of things. I really am sleeping better at night and waking up a little earlier than usual. Also, with not drinking milk with my coffee, I am satisfied with less coffee, and I am feeling the caffeine more. I think the key to success for me is going to be all about planning and preparing my food. I didn't have my usual huge salad at lunch and ended up getting REALLY hungry and eating more nuts than I should have, but at least I didn't go off plan.

Does anyone feel like sharing what motivated them to try the whole30 and whole9 in general?

For myself- I am concerned about dietary sources of inflammation after watching my mother sink into the twilight of dementia and her mother before her. I also feel like the nightly glass of wine and sitting in front of the tv or with the ipad too much of a mindless habit - junk living. I felt that I needed a "hard reset" so to speak. I read It Starts With Food over a weekend and it made so much sense to me, so I decided to just go for it. I am also reading another book by Pema Chodron called Start Where You Are, so that's what I'm trying to do.

Hi Melissa and Jasperina-- I too am totally missing my weekend cocktail (nevermind the week nights after a long workday and I'm in grad school full time, some days are 6 AM to 11 PM)! In addition to missing my cocktails, I'm having a bit of difficulty with timing of meals- as I said, the days are so long, and it's rather difficult to "pack" lunch/dinner because I have dinner plans or lunch plans for business where I must eat out. And that is tragic. I've found trying to get a piece of "real" chicken breast - unmarinated, without ANYTHING on it, to be a project in and of itself. Amazing how much food is processes and many people don't know it. Helpful hint to those eating out, I tell the server I have food allergies and that I'm on a special diet-- I need to make sure my meat or veggies etc. are without anything other than sauteed or grilled with a little OLIVE oil and nothing else, and this seems to work.

Does anyone know if its a big deal to shift meal times? In other words, while I may be up at 7 AM, I will sometimes put off breakfast until 10 so I can space my meals according to the day I have in front of me. For instance, breakfast 10, lunch 2:30, and diner 9ish. I don't have much choice a couple days a week because of my schedule.

Lastly. I've been really tired, when I hit the bed at 11 PM -I'm OUT! I don't know how I'd be up before until 2 AM (with alcohol) and still pop up and go to the gym at 6:30 am ??? Today Is the first morning (and its late on a Sunday) that I'm going to attempt the gym.... this should be fun, after giving my tired body a rest for all these days!

DAY 9 AND COUNTING!!!

Take care all- hope to hear feedback and to hear if anyone else is sharing similar struggles.

J

I'm under the impression that reasonable amounts of condiments are allowed provided they follow the W30 guidelines in the ingredients. Like soy sauce is OUT because soy is out. I've used dijon mustard several times, and I could not live without my garlic powder and dried herbs. You must be VERY careful with, say. ketchup. Most commercial brands are heavily sweetened.

And you've seen the recipes for homemade mayo, right? There's at least one floating around here somewhere, or I have one I can post for you.

@ Marihana - thank you! I figured that mustard was fine, but I've been so strict with myself I didn't want to take the chance! I believe I've seen the recipe for the mayo- but truth be told... I'll wait untl after my whole 30 is up and have the real stuff, lol. Literally, I eat pretty good to begin with-- so the only things I truly miss that I will reintroduce after my whole 30 are as follows: French fries and Mayo (on occassion) and alcohol- a big salted margarita to be exact! haha!

@ Melissa, I am reluctant to do 4 meals... and yes, I'm starving when I wake up also, but I'm literally so flippin busy, I just push through it ( I know, not the best idea). How are things going for you?

Hi all! I didn't realize there were all these posts here until today! How is everyone doing? Day 10 for me! First few days were tough for me because I was really tired. This week I definitely feel less puffy and bloated which is good.

My energy levels fluctuate. Some days I'm good, some days I'm in bed at 8:30. Like yesterday I couldn't finish my workout.

On to day 10!!
