Ancestral Foodie
I'm sure I've read somewhere that Rice Vinegar is okay, but I can't see how, considering one of the ingredients is Rice - can anyone advise? It's actually in at least one of the recipes from Melissa Joulwan's blog.....
Moderators Tom Denham Posted March 8, 2013 Moderators Share Posted March 8, 2013 The fermentation process makes rice vinegar okay. The original Whole30 guidelines left room for only apple cider vinegar and balsamic, but deeper studies opened the door to many more vinegars. Ancestral Foodie
Oh great, thanks Tom! I'm not a particular fan of vinegars except balsamic, but as it is in many recipes, I thought I should get some (but only if it was Whole30 compliant!). would apple cider vingegar be okay if it has manuka honey added? I find it so strong and really hard to handle, but am hoping the manuka honey (with it's antiseptic qualities) will make it a good choice instead? Kirsteen
Hi Carla, I'm afraid honey, like all sweeteners, is out while you're doing a W30
Moderators Tom Denham Posted March 8, 2013 Moderators Share Posted March 8, 2013 I used apple cider vinegar exclusively when I first started cooking Whole30 meals and it can be strong. I learned to be avoid using "too much." Later I started using balsamic vinegar and found it accomplished much of what I wanted to achieve. A few months ago, I discovered infused balsamic vinegars and I am wildly happy with the experience. I bought 3 bottles of balsamic vinegar this week - blackberry ginger, pomegranate, and jalapeno balsamic. All of them are exciting to cook with. 1Maryann
carlah, the rice vinegar is much milder than ACV. I think you will really like it.

Mercy
The infused balsamic vinegars are amazing! I was pretty frustrated though when I bought that big bottle from Costco of regular balsamic and it has sulfites...ugh! I guess back to my little bottles for awhile... laura_juggles
Vinegar has sulfites and "contains sulfites" must be listed on the packaging. But you just need to check the ingredients list and see if sulfites are specifically listed there as having been added. If they're not added sulfites, you can still have the vinegar. praxisproject
Always read your vinegar labels too, I saw a rice vinegar this week that was loaded with syrup! The "contains sulfites" warning also differs from country to country, different labelling laws. Natural sulfites are fine. Cheap balsamics tend to add artificial ones to fake aging in taste, so if it's very cheap, read carefully.
Kaelisan
There are 2 kinds of rice vinegar. The sweetened kind for making sushi and unsweetened, which is allowed if it doesn't have non-compliant ingredients.
