How much snacking is too much??

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was day 3 for me and I definitely was feeling a tad bit crazy food wise. I decided to snack on some pistachios, but went a little bit overboard. The first handful was closed fist, then I had a few more fistfuls. Do I need to start over? As I am only on day 4 (today), starting over wouldn't be too bad, but it would definitely be a kick in my self-esteem. I know this program is going to work, but I am so afraid of failing as I have failed at so many other programs in the past.

On a positive note, I feel much better today regarding the food craziness. Developed a slight headache which is uncomfortable (I never get headaches) and slept poorly last night, but I know this is all a part of the process.

Congratulations on starting up! I had a very similar first few days, and ate a lot more often than recommended until about Day 6 or so. Also got the headache (and what they call the Kill All The Things reaction on the fourth day, but fortunately nobody was around!). Overeating nuts isn't what you want to keep doing for a number of reasons, but they are not non-compliant foods, and so you don't have to start over. I would recommend (and I'm only in the middle of my first W30 so don't pretend to being an expert, just having been where you are pretty recently) find a way (notebook, small calendar, something like that) to note when you are eating, what time of day seems to be the most problem for you, and then picking a handful of alternative activities that you could try instead of eating.

I was the Empress of compulsive eating (3-4 p.m. was my bad time) for so many years, and by Day 19 now, it's very rare that I even want to snack, or even think about food unless I'm hungry. Like they say, if that could happen to me, you've got some great days to look forward to. So, be patient and compassionate for yourself, and keep it going! Congrats again and good luck!

Thanks for the response! It's so nice to have the same experiences as others. :)

I am going to take the dogs for a walk today if I get the urge to snack. I received Day 4 of the Whole30 newsletter that explained the difference between cravings and hunger, so i will also use the techniques to determine what I am really after. I am also going to read the book again to help with the motivation.

If you were truly hungry then take this opportunity to look back over your meals and see if you need to make some adjustments. I'm typically satisfied from one meal to another. There are rare occasions when I actually feel the rumble and need a snack to make it through. You might need a little more protein or fat at your meals to lessen or end snacking. But if you truly need a snack and are honestly hungry try to keep it within the template, protein/fat/veg.

As far as starting over, no I wouldn't. But be honest with yourself about why your hand was going back to pistachios, if it's a food without brakes for you it might be best to not keep it around during your 30.

Thinking about it in retrospect, I know I wasn't hungry at the time. I was giving into the craving. I think my husband may have just finished off the nuts (shaking my head) so I am safe from them and will not be buying anymore. Pre-Whole30, I wasn't a huge sweets eater. I dealt with the Salt Dragon and Wine Dragon. Even typing and reading the word "wine" illicits salivation and desire. That's going to be the hardest thing to kick for me.

I ate 4 or 5 meals per day during my first Whole30. Not snacking at all was easy for me. :) I consider adding an extra meal preferable to eating some nuts or a piece of fruit. It doesn't have to be a full-size meal, but there is no need to go hungry during a Whole30.
