maryteam2
Hi, I have a different question. I read somewhere that sweet potatoes are slightly goiterous. Basically, they might slow down the thyroid a bit. Since I already have a low thyroid I don't want that. Then, I have seen some information that says the goiterous effect might be nullified when cooking sweet potatoes. Can someone shed some light on this for me? I would love to add sweet potatoes to my diet since I do P90X. However, if they are going to slow down my thyroid, I am going to have to find some other carb to eat. Zoodles
I don't know, however I have Hashimoto's as well and have been chowing down on the sweet potatoes. After my first Whole30 I had to cut my meds, so for me it doesn't seem like sweet potatoes or the truckloads of cauliflower/broccoli etc were having a noticeably negative impact! I haven't heard of sweet potatoes containing goitrogens, I thought it was more the brassicas and soy....but as you say, cooking these veggies well usually destroys most of the goitrogens, so I say enjoy your sweet potatoes
maryteam2
Okay, I will give it a shot then. I really need the carbs. The way I make sweet potatoes is I slow cook 3 of them for 6 hours, put an apple in there, some cinnamon, mash it up and it tastes so good. So, maybe 6 hours of slow cooking makes a difference.
