jillmick
I am on day 5 of Whole 30. All three of my kids got sick and I tried fighting it off with all my herbs, but to no avail. I went to the doctor and I have a sinus infection & brochitis. I had to force myself to eat today, but I did and stayed on course. I don't want to stop, but I'm wondering if the meds with have an adverse effect on this whole process?? Honestly, I'm sticking with this regardless, but I was just curious. I won't be on the meds for long..so we shall see. I just want to be healthy again!
Moderators Tom Denham Posted March 16, 2013 Moderators Share Posted March 16, 2013 I got sick five days ago and finally went to the doctor today. Diagnosis: sinus infection and bronchitis. Treatment: Heavy duty antibiotics for 5 days. I took my first dose today and soon after needed a two hour nap. My coughing is already better and I am feeling better after about 6 hours. Wow. I wish I had gone to the doctor sooner. Curiously, I have been extra hungry while sick. I would eat a big meal and become hungry again after a few hours. And I woke up in the early morning hungry. I think most people lose their appetite with an illness like this, but not me, at least not this time. Your Whole30 experience will be colored by being sick and by the meds. Antibiotics kills good stuff in the gut and not just bad stuff in your sinuses. You should be sure to eat probiotic rich foods like good sauerkraut and kombucha, but your gut will probably just be recovering at the end of your 30 days. That said, I think you can still have a good experience. It just won't be quite as good as if you had 30 healthy days in a row.
jillmick
Thanks so much for the response Tom! I'm a little bummed to hear this, but not surprised. Guess I'll have to load up on sauerkraut & kombucha (both of which I've never liked in the past)...would taking probiotics help too? I need to read up on what you all say about supplements...I have the articles saved, but I've been too tired to read them. Thaks again..
Susan W
Jill, what Tom said is that you "may not" get the great results from your W30. He didn't say that you won't. Not everyone is affected so adversely by antibiotics. Give it a chance to help you and don't assume it will be a nightmare. I agree that they do destroy the good bacteria and that sucks, but breathe and see how you feel.
Kirsteen
Hi Jillmick, yes every time I'm given antiobiotics I take probiotics as well. As Tom says, foods like sauerkraut and kombucha are great but I'm justa belt and braces sort of person . I too was a bit bummed to take really ill during my first W30 and have to take meds but I reckoned if I was ill while eating really healthy food, adding in crap was in no way going to help. So kudos for just carrying on. If you don't feel you've got all the benefit you wanted, you can always extend the W30 for a bit. good luck and hope you feel better soon. Colleen Roy
Hmmmmm....three people on the whole30 forums diagnosed with sinus infections and bronchitis-me too! I'm beginning to wonder if maybe reading the forums is getting all sick? Some sort of "virus"? Kidding of course, but it does seem like a lot of us have been fighting one thing or another recently! Tis the season, for sure. Hope you feel better. I saw a HUGE improvement within 12 hours of starting antibiotics and haven't had any gut issues. Hang in there-like Kirsteen said-if you feel poorly while eating good food, imagine how much worse you'd be feeling if you were eating bad food! Holly
It was so awesome to go through a whole 30 and feel all the results, for me. I'm sure I would feel differently if I were sick while doing it, because being sick makes you feel lousy. I am recovering from strep throat that has morphed into a cough and also on antibiotics right now, and it is enough that I am not feeling the great results of having been on a Whole 30 turned Whole Extended version. I miss the good feeling....because of the illness. So for me, I wonder how much more satisfying a Whole 30 would be while not feeling sick? Not that you should stop eating this way just because you are sick....it's a great time to eat healthy.
EileenRBe
I got a cold after my W30 but while still eating 90% compliant. I got over it in 4 days, a record for me. I totally give credit to the program.
