mskellyw
Today I started my second Whole30 at 25 weeks pregnant! My first was last summer and I'm pretty sure it's the reason I ended up pregnant to begin with : ) Anyway, even though I've (miraculously) only gained 12lbs so far since I've been pregnant, I know my diet has definitely not been the best. I've been eating way too much sugar and not nearly enough veggies. I'm hoping that completing a Whole30 will be the jumpstart I need to carry me through the next few months. I've been really lucky with my pregnancy so far (this is my first and it's been pretty easy), but I am starting to get a little bit of swelling in my feet so I'm hoping that eating better will help nip that in the bud. Last time I did the Whole30 I was strict... In addition to the recommended exclusions I also cut out all seed oils, caffeine, all food additives, etc. I wouldn't even eat food that I hadn't prepared myself, for fear that it was made with seed oils, non-compliant spices, etc. This time I won't have the luxury of being quite that strict (too many plans involving restaurants already on the books), but I'm still going to do my best to be as compliant as possible. I also want to experiment with some paleo bread recipes I've recently come across, so I'm not sure how well that fits into the "paleo-ified" crap guideline... I do have celiac though and it's pretty rare that I partake in any kind of gluten-free bread or baked good, so that kind of stuff isn't really a trigger for me. I've always viewed the dividing line on that guideline as not making things to satisfy cravings you should be trying to squelch altogether. So since I won't be making them as a substitute for anything else, I'm going to go ahead partake without guilt (if I even get around to actually making them!) I plan to start a log over in the "Your Whole30 Log" forum to keep me accountable. Also, I was looking over my last log and was so thankful to have some ideas to get me started that I figured I'd do it again in the interest of helping out future me if she ever needs it : ) I'd love to hear about anyone else's experience doing the Whole30 while pregnant! Did it help with any late pregnancy symptoms you were experiencing?
IronMoe
Hi there! I started my first Whole30 at 29 weeks. The first 14 weeks were wonder bread grilled cheese sandwiches and, well, anything else I could eat. I gained more in my first trimester (15, when I was already about 10 lbs up from optimal) than you have so far :-P After that i was less nauseated and cleaned it up a lot, slowing the gain. Then the week before I started, I had a solid week of holy sugar batman. Bad mental, emotional, and physical food behaviors. I knew that I couldn't keep going (for the little bugger OR me) and really trust the Whole30 philosophy, both for physical and mental/food issue healing. As a sports nutritionist, tri coach and physician, I have to really trust in the process. I can't stomach much in the way of veggies so fruits are prob higher than "normal" As for symptoms, I'm sleeping better in my third trimester - UNHEARD OF! GI tract is better, meaning it actually moves :-) I'm halfway through today, and very happy with both my ability to see a greater reason for change, as well as some physical changes. I would like to weigh myself though! But I'll wait...
ajclemons5
Thank you so much for posting! I have done a few whole 30's over the last year and eat primarily paleo when I'm not. I'm 11 weeks along with my second child, and all i want to eat is white bread and goldfish crackers!! I try and make sure that 2 meals a day are completely whole 30 acceptable, and those are usually really hard to choke down. The other meal usually consists of a PB sandwich with goldfish crackers (seriously am I a 4 year old ) I'm trying not to stress too much, as I'm hoping the "all day" sickness will pass in the next couple of weeks. Looking forward to getting my eating back on track in the 2nd tri. UGH, i forgot how much morning sickness sucks!! I'm just really surprised at how little will power i seem to have against these sugar cravings.

mskellyw
Yeah, I definitely went a little (or a lot) carb crazy during my first trimester! In fact, my first sign of being pregnant, starting just a few days after conceiving, was that I was completely unable to stomach meat. Once the morning sickness kicked in around six weeks pretty much all I could eat was grain products (gluten-free due to celiac), dairy and fruit. I continued to have nausea and food aversions through about week 19ish, so I'm really doing my best to clean things up from here on out!
IronMoe
I finished my first Whole30 fabulously! I did, however, take a rapid downhill slide that started on a 3 day trip to the in-laws at 33 weeks preg. That dragon got me. So now, my thought is that I really need to do a second one. I really want to sleep better again! And it almost eliminated my Braxton-Hicks! Have a couple events soon, and won't be able to cook for myself in the hospital, so may not start the full 30 until after my csection. But in the morning, I'm having my "usual" breakfast! Then I'll pack well for work for 2 days. Can't wait to feel better!!!
Anandi
I also credit my first WHole30 for my second pregnancy That baby is now 7.5 months old. I didn't do a W30 during pregnancy (was way too nauseous for the first 15 weeks or so) but after I nearly failed my glucose tolerance test, cut out all grains and sugar and it worked wonders for my blood sugar. (The doctor was impressed, too.) It didn't help with the swelling, unfortunately, but I never did get elevated blood pressure or pre-eclampsia, thankfully, despite having ridiculous swollen calves and feet. (Think the people in the movie WALL-E.)
