Dana Binns Grummer
I'm looking for local pork and found a farm near my house. Their advertise to have pastured pork. Then I see on FB where someone asked them what they feed their animals - and the response was: "The hogs are fed a blend of corn soybean meal, crimped oats and hog grower feed." So I realize I'm new to all this - but how is this 'pastured'? I'm guessing this pork is non-compliant. They do have grass-fed beef and free-range chickens so I think I might at least get that there. Susan W
Call them. Hogs have to eat things other than what they root about. If they get to roam and root, they ate happy hogs.
AmyS
It's compliant, though it may not be your first choice. Grass-fed and pastured is only an absolute requirement for the butter you use to make ghee. (I agree with Susan, though, call them and ask what they do.) Sharon Simpson Thumann
Buy the best you can afford. I am finding that WF's step 5 pork is decently priced and tastes pretty good. I was buying from a local butcher and spending $15 lb just for pork chops, which meant two chops cost about $30. Not ideal at all.. so WF has been my savior for pork. NMG
Pigs don't graze - they are omnivores so need other foods. Sounds like these pigs aren't fed ideally but at least are able to lie in the sun and mud.
