I can't force myself to eat meal 1 :(

Recommended Posts

Today is day 9 and I have been making myself eat meal 1 within the hour of waking up... Until now. I could not force anything down but a couple of macadamias. I think my meal 1 options are causing me to be sick of the smell/taste. Any new ideas on more breakfasty-type meals? Sausage and eggs are probably out now. It's hard to get used to protein that early in the morning!

Side note: I don't allow myself fruit in the morning as I'm trying to cut the sugar there. I'm also choosing to cut all nightshades during whole30.

Make yourself a "dinner" meal. Leftovers are standard fare here, usually some mashed squash, broccoli or other cooked veg, and meat or even fish. I made pan-seared scallops for breakfast the other day, and they were very easy and delicious.

My new favorite is a little bit of ground beef mixed with leftover cooked sweet potato. It mixes up like a porridge.

Just keep a bunch of cooked ground beef (mine has onion and garlic, and shredded carrots in it) in the frig. Make a few sweet potatoes and keep them on hand, too. In morning scoop some of the meat and potatoes and just reheat! You can even top it with coconut milk to make it more porridge-y.

Diced and herbed sweet potatoes and pan grilled pieces of tilapia. Light tasting, filling and not the traditional eggs and sausage. Maybe a frittata ( egg in a different form) slightly warm with a couple strawberries.

All fantastic ideas! Thank you for the input! I'm definitely going to do the tilapia and sweet potato and the ground beef mix! Left overs are a good idea but I'm always saving those for my lunches! Thanks everyone!

A few weeks after our 30 days, my husband told me he has been cutting back his portion sizes at meal one because he gets nauseous. We eat all sorts of leftovers and some frittattas or hashes. I have to be awake about a half hour before him, if not longer. He thought it would help if he was awake for 15 minutes before eating, but the scheduling got tough to get my food in within an hour - which was easy before I was cooking/warming a big meal and before we discovered the joy of sitting together in the morning. The logistics have become a mess. He is fine with any food at any hour, and ate breakfast foods or leftovers before. Now, he says he is still nauseous 2 hours later. :(

Also you are only 9 days in and the hormonal shift that would make you hungry when you wake up maybe just hasn't happened yet. In a week or two you may find meal 1 more natural feeling.

I think Robin had mentioned this before as well, but determining the texture you find appealing and go with that. Did you eat yogurt before? Maybe something cold and wet- cold sliced chicken dipped in cold mashed sweet potato- could do the trick.

Perhaps I'm not the best one to chip in here (brekky is my hands down favorite meal of the day); however, I have to say that there are a couple of things that help me get it down when I'm having one of those rare off days where I just don't feel like eating meal 1. First of all, I need my java--I've never liked it with cream and sugar, so that was a non-issue for me; however, I enjoy the ritual of grinding the beans, boiling the water, and enjoying the house begin to smell of delicious coffee as it steeps in the French press. Second off, I have to be awake enough to enjoy the process of making my first meal o'the day--I have pretty much the same thing every morning (because I like it, and because it's easy to come up with variations on the theme)--and usually after my first cup o'Joe, I'm to a point where I enjoy the ritual of first heating the coconut oil I use to pan-fry my sweet potato hash browns (these are a great thing to dice up for the week on a Sunday)--they smell divine when they start to get all crispy and especially after they get their seasoning blend for the day (favorites--garlic, salt, white pepper, oregano, and a little bit of onion powder or cinnamon, nutmeg and a tid bit of sea salt). While those finish up, I get my meat all heated (usually compliant bacon, or leftovers, or tuna), and by the time my meat and yams are plated and tempting, I usually wilt some spinach/cabbage/Brussels sprouts in the yam pan with some EVOO while I fry up a couple of eggs (I'm so partial to runny yolks and crispy edges, it's criminal). 20 minutes later, I have a delicious meal that I enjoyed cooking(and if it's a particularly wonderful morning, I remember to brew more coffee in the meantime), have gone through my morning ritual of allowing myself some wake-up time through my favorite hobby in the world (cooking), and since I've been inhaling the yummy brekky smells, it's pretty much a guarantee that I have little to absolutely no trouble enjoying a compliant and delicious meal 1. (in fact, I have brekky for dinner all the freakin' time, love me my eggs :) ) Find foods that work for you, that excite you, and allow yourself enough time in the morning to put together a ritual that helps you to look forward to getting out of bed and breaking that fast!
