Jinkse21
Does anyone buy Amish Chicken? My local farmers' market has a few stands that sell it so I was wondering if this would be acceptable,
Susan W
I am quite sure it would be. I picture them in a pasture able to peck around happily...not watching TV. I would speak to the farmer and ask how they are raised.
bookluvingbabe
Ask if they use a soy-based feed. I try to only buy directly from the farmers too.
Robin Strathdee
just for clarification: even if they use a soy-based feed, the chickens are compliant Chickens are, inherently, compliant.

Jinkse21
So we should be more concerned with purchasing drug-free birds, not so much about what kind of feed they had (sans drugs), right? If so, that make me one happy bird eater!!
Susan W
Just use your best judgement and buy the best bird you can. If you don't buy from a farmer, there is no way you will know what they are fed so buy Organic if you can. To me, a chicken that is allowed to roam in fresh air and gets to peck around and is not fed hormones or antibiotics is most important to me. I can't always afford them. If I end up buying a typical grocery store chicken, I try to get organic. If I can't do that, I don't eat the skin.
Jinkse21
I almost forgot how good chicken skin is! I roasted organic, free-range chicken pieces and ate the skin...it was so crunchy-yummy! I'll go out of my way to buy Organic just so I can eat the skin!

When I roast a whole chicken, I yank the wing ends off as soon as it comes out of the oven and it becomes a salted and peppered morsel.
