JaneA
My kids have been real troopers about giving up their beloved carbs. I have made, in the past, sweet potato "pancakes". All it is is puréed sweet potato, spices and eggs. Then I fry it up in clarified butter. We can call them sweet potato patties. But I don't want to Paleo-ize junk food, which I know defeats the purpose of the Whole30. It's a yummy, easy and fun way for me to get the kids veggies for Meal 1. Am I breaking rules, here? MattD
Sounds yummy. A mod will give a definitive answer, but those sound like just another way to prepare sweet potatoes not SWYPO. I guess the major exception would be if you are totally craving pancakes and use these to satisfy that craving - this would make them an obvious "no!". JaneA
Nope. No pancake cravings. Actually, I'm past most cravings. I enjoy it, but it's more for the kids, the oldest of which is 8, with two younger. Thanks!
JaneA
By the way, what does SWYPO stand for? I'm on day 12 of my first Whole30, so I'm still learning.
JaneA
I forgot, there is a little almond flour -Probably for cohesiveness.

Susan W
Here's how I feel...first, congrats for getting your kids on board. Lots of people have a whole bunch of trouble doing that. I would say that it could be SWYPO (sex with your pants on) for you or them (then again maybe not), but if they were my kids, I think I wouldn't hesitate to serve them occasionally. The almond flour really is kind of turning them into paleofied pancakes and if they are craving pancakes, it may be better to simply grate up some sweet potato, use an egg to bind and fry then up to go with their other protein. Wow..I sound very wishy washy. I think it's because I don't know how all of you are eating otherwise and whether you are simply having one patty to go with the rest of your protein and veggies. I always think of the meal template and it hasn't let me down yet.
JaneA
There's 1/4 c almond flour for the whole batch. You can also use 2T coconut flour. They don't have the texture of pancakes. They just kinda' look like them. I can try it without it, next time and see how they hold together. They're definitely not SWYPO for me. I don't know about the kids. But, there are so many changes I'm putting them through, I look at it as a treat for them. I can call them patties to take the image of the pancake out of their minds. It's not something you'd want to put syrup on, for sure!
JaneA
We have been really trying to stick with the template. I made homemade grassfed beef sausage patties and the sweet potato patties. I usually have 2-3 veggies on the plate in the morning. But this time, just the sweet potatoes.
Susan W
Oh no worries. Don't leave the flour out..they'll be a sticky mess. You are doing great!! I really mean that. Your kids are very lucky.
JaneA
Thanks. I feel like such a stick in the mud when I tell the kids, "No, you can't have that corn dog and French fries." But, they're really trying and although they do have a few slip ups away from me, I'm very proud of them. They don't really understand the SWYPO idea. I'll be using a different analogy when I explain, though! Lol!!! I'm really grateful for this forum. I seem to be the "expert" for my friends who are just starting. But, I'm just a newbie who's learned to crawl. I appreciate all you walkers and runners helping me take my first few steps!!!
Keianna
I don't think it is a bad thing. My 3 year old is 90% along for the journey. She is whisy washy on sweet potatoes, but the other day I sliced them thinly and oven roasted them. I said they were sweet potato chips and she gobbled them up :-) I didn't feel bad. She is getting the veggie in. She will happily eat other veggies but not sweet potatoes.
Beets
I don't see any reason to be sticklers with kids unless there is a serious health concern. I personally would not eat them myself as they veer towards a baked good (a problem for me and something I am loathe to give up), but your kids, while I'm sure they are benefitting greatly!, didn't sign up for a Whole 30 and don't--I think--need to follow all the same rules. I guess it also depends on the kids but giving my kids a little bit of choice and power goes a long way when you are laying down the law! And changing their diet like this is a big change. My kids are still asking for cereal everyday even though I haven't had it in the house for over a month.
EmilyB456
I don't see how it's a lot different from Johnny's oh-my-god-good sweet potato fritters that he eats with breakfast and everybody loves, ingredient-wise. I'd say enjoy them...unless you're topping them with a bunch of maple syrup and butter.

This is where the gray lies so it really is hard to make it a clear yes or no. I totally agree on easing up on the kiddos. For the adults..it depends. jennrider
I make those for my kids. I usually make about 30 and freeze them. They just pop them in the toaster to heat. The transition to paleo has been a gradual process for my kids. I can't keep enough food around for them. Breakfast is the hardest meal for me so I take any shortcuts I can. Getting four kids out the door by 7:30 is nothing short of a miracle most days. One of the greatest things to come out of my W30 was the quality of sleep I get now. Getting out of bed ready to face the day has greatly improved our mornings.
Moluv
They don't really understand the SWYPO idea. I'll be using a different analogy when I explain, though! Lol!!! Kirsteen
I totally agree that kids get cut more slack and Jane, it sounds as though you're doing awesome with your kids. Yeah I had a good laugh at the birds and bees but I know when my kids were little they would never have got the SWYPO thing and I don't just mean literally I mean they never thought of one food substituting for another - they simply either liked a food or they didn't. Jane, the meal template of sausage patties, sweet potato patties and usually another veg sounds great. You're getting good nutritious food into your family. when am I coming for breakfast
NMG
I would also venture to say that if the kids aren't yet "broken" in terms of how they think about food, they they won't need clever analogies to help them "get it"
Beets
Yeah. My kids are five and almost two and I can't imagine getting into the psychology of "pancakes." My son would say, "but mom can I'm huuuuungry and I hate all this food!" sixteen more times and my daughter would keep screaming "cake!" But bravo for doing this with them!
