maryteam2
Hi, Someone gave me some kefir water made from sugar on Sat. I didn't know that you can't have kefir water not made with sugar. So, how do you make kefir water without the sugar? Does someone have a recipe they wouldn't mind sharing? I have never made this before. Thanks! Kirsteen
To be honest I don't think you can make it without sugar. Just as sugar is what feeds the scoby in kombucha, I'm pretty sure you need sugar to feed the kefir grains. At least that was the way I did it and I've never heard of any other. annabel
I think fermentation needs sugar to occur... at least that's what I vaguely remember from when I was a teaching assistant in a Biology class (over a dozen years ago)
Moluv
I have made water kefir with fruit juice and coconut water, both of which have naturally occurring sugars for the culture to feast on.
Kim Christensen
Be sure not to use honey though as it can kill your grains.
