Jinkse21
Tahini is made from chickpeas so it would not be compliant. Sesame seeds, while not ideal, can be used in moderation. Not sure on the sunflower seeds.
Susan W
Tahini is made from chickpeas so it would not be compliant. Sesame seeds, while not ideal, can be used in moderation. Not sure on the sunflower seeds. Tahini is a seed butter. It is made from sesame seeds. Hummus is made from garbonzo beans and tahini and therefor not OK. The other 3 are okay as an ingredient but full of omega 6 so I would not overdo.
Susan W
Cant edit my post but I meant tahini, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds are okay as ingredients..not hummus.

30Canandaigua
Tahini is ok, but I would limit it... as it may throw off your omega ratios. ((I like to toss roasted acorn suash & raisins in it and serve over arugula with a dash of cinnamon ))
Nicole1775
I read something on here that it was fine so I have been eating tahini salad dressing. I use tahini, garlic, lemon, evoo and cilantro. Is this compliment? I drizzle over my salad at lunch and dinner.
Kirsteen
As Susan said, tahini is technically compliant but very high in Omega 6 (not the good one). For every ounce of sesame seeds you're only getting 0.1 g of Omega 3 to a whopping 6.7 g Omega 6. So, whilst it would be OK occasionally, if you're having it twice a day, most days, you've quite an imbalance there which isn't really healthy. It would benefit your health more to limit the amount of tahina and swap with other salad dressing at least part of the time
dmdean
Speaking of salad dressing, what salad dressings are acceptable to eat on the whole30 program?
Nicole1775
Would the omega 6 imbalance cause weight gain?
Susan W
Omega 6 can take over where we want the Omega 3s which causes inflammation and all diseases (including weightgain by inflammation) connected to that. Here is a good link to what Chris Kresser says about Omega 6 vs Omega 3. http://chriskresser.com/how-too-much-omega-6-and-not-enough-omega-3-is-making-us-sick

DanaB
So glad to hear tahini is OK since I'm hosting a happy hour - I agreed to this way before I'd even heard of the Whole 30 - and would love to serve my veggies with this Sweet Potato Hummus - http://www.tgipaleo.com/2012/05/28/sweet-potato-hummus/ - YIPPEE! Emily T
How much tahini is too much? I put 1 tablespoon in my cauliflower hummus, which made about 1.5 cups - I have been eating a few tablespoons per day (of the hummus, not the tahini).
