Emma
I've taken the Natural Calm for four nights now and the first few nights my sleep was a bit restless, but overall okay. Last night, however, I was wide awake - WIDE - until two fifteen. I'd gone to bed at ten. Overall, I'm a decent sleeper and generally able to fall asleep even after a stressful day, but there was no falling asleep last night. I've also noticed that my stomach has been upset, gurgly and bloated feeling during the night and in the morning. The Natural Calm is the only new thing in my life. I read on the other post about folks splitting the dose and perhaps I'll try that. Is it possible that the magnesium is stimulating for some people? Or is possible that I'm taking in too much magnesium or too little calcium? I am eating a healthy diet of squash and almonds these days which are decent magnesium sources. Suggested plan of action? Moderators Tom Denham Posted May 3, 2013 Moderators Share Posted May 3, 2013 Calcium tends to rev you up, magnesium dials you down. If you are taking the combined calcium and magnesium supplement that is available, you could be revving up too much from it. If you are taking the ordinary, magnesium only Natural Calm, I don't think it would keep you wide awake. Many people have diarrhea when they first start taking Natural Calm because magnesium has a laxative effect. The reason to take a smaller dose is to let your body adjust (and not experience diarrhea).
Emma
Tom, I read what you wrote and I thought, "I AM taking the one with added calcium. How brilliant." And then I went and looked at my container and it is just the plain 'ol Natural Calm. Dang it. Now that my morning is over, perhaps I'll try taking some now and see what happens. It will either let me take a much needed nap with the kids or it will not, in which case I'll get some work done. I really am a decent sleeper and I've been sleeping really well the past few weeks so this is throwing me for a loop. I'll try it again tonight, but I'll only do a half teaspoon. janetdawn
Is there a form of Natural Calm without Stevia? I've been using it before going on Whole30, but since it has stevia, haven't been using it while on the plan.
Emma
Is there a form of Natural Calm without Stevia? I've been using it before going on Whole30, but since it has stevia, haven't been using it while on the plan. Try looking for the original version. It has no stevia and is just citric acid and magnesium. I thought it would taste horrible, but I find I rather like it - reminds me of tea without sweeteners.
