Toni Casassa Gatlin
With the heavy emphasis on protein, especially from animals, are there special concerns on the W30 (or Paleo-style in general) for someone who already has compromised kidney function? Are there some recommended supplements that could make the increased protein easier to handle?
Tristen Dubz Waters
I would recommend reading through these posts by Robb Wolf: http://robbwolf.com/2011/05/19/clearing-up-kidney-confusion-introduction/ http://robbwolf.com/2011/06/16/clearing-up-kidney-confusion-part-deux/ I have Polycystic Kidney Disease, and have decided, with the help of these writings, that my moderate protein intake is not going to harm my kidneys further, and that the lifestyle changes of Whole30/Paleo will help them overall. I had blood work done a few weeks ago, and everything was functioning properly. I'm having my blood work redone a week after this Whole30 to compare. I am psyched to see actual before & after data!!!!
mcomcnair
I too, have PKD and am on my second week of W30. It's my first w30, so I'm not sure that I can offer much, but I'm glad there are others with renal issues that are giving this a go. I read the above Robb Wolf links before I decided to take this on. My doc wants me on a low sodium, moderate protein diet. He also said I could NOT do "low carb". Even though W30 suggest not tracking food, I have been doing so to keep an Eye on these three issues. Some days are better than others. I've actually been too low on my sodium (half my allotted 1200mg) on some days and had leg cramps at night (my potassium was fine those days). Some days I'm a little high on my protein, but not by much. Carbs have been steady. I'd love to hear how this is going for others with similar issues. Be well!
