    Sleep

Help! I'm on day 21 and haven't slept properly in over a month. It wasn't the reason for doing Whole30 but I thought it was a good benefit. Having done it before I was expecting 7-10 days in, clear head, sleep of kings, great mood etc. All this eludes me and I don't know why. I have had a Stroke nearly 30 years ago and so I do have night spasms occasionally but not every night. I just can't seem to switch my brain off. I've tried meditation, music for sleep, insomnia guided meditation, nothing works and I'm at the end of my rope. I'm getting roughly 2 hours a night, for example I was so tired last night that I took myself to bed after I'd sorted my children out so lights were out by 7:45pm! by 9:30pm I'm awake and apparently that was all the sleep I was getting. WTF? Does anyone have any ideas? Hubby thinks it could be lack of calories but I'm not hungry or anything and definitely not counting calories so I'm stuck. I'm just not getting the sleep I need (because of Stroke fatigue I have to have a solid 7-8hrs a night) and am just not functioning anymore. #zombie Please help...

Whole 30 with performance swimmer daughter

Aw thanks for your response, sorry if I wasn't clear. No, my question was completely regarding how to feed her to support her training. I have done the whole30 so know what she should and shouldn't be eating, the example I gave was her current diet, I don't particularly wish it to be her diet going forward so I can alter that myself. I am relatively sedentary due to health difficulties and have never done performance sport so don't have the first clue on things to add or supplement on the whole30 plan. I hope this is more clear...
  4. Hi, I have done the Whole30 a couple of times now so like to think I can figure it out where I'm concerned. But now, my daughter (8) has been invited into the Swimming Club where she will be swimming longer, harder and more often. As they do they recommend a standard western diet, high in grain yadda yadda, but I'm loathe to allow my daughter to eat this way, at least until I've explored every avenue. Can anyone offer advice please? We loosely follow the plan as a family and are aware that protein and fats are better than grain but are carbs really necessary? I think this may be where I have become unstuck. Her rough day will look like brekkie - omelette/boiled eggs snack - generally fruit lunch - at school a cooked meal along the lines of potatoes, meat and veg/ a meat with rice eg a curry/ sausage and mash and veg at home a baked potato and beans/chicken salad sandwich/wrap with homemade soup snack - generally fruit dinner - a cooked protein containing dinner more often than not but quite often with her grain of choice; rice/pasta I am very aware now that she is swimming on 3 consecutive days and on a fri evening - sat morning with very little recovery time. Can you please advise things I can prepare for her as pre/post work out snacks, especially straight from school on a Friday? Perhaps things she needs more/less of on her training days? A certain food group for energy?? I want to help her fuel her body correctly and you never know where she may take this swimming mallarchy :-) Thanks so much in advance

    Teaching a 5yo

Up to now, my husband & I have always made the food choices for our nearly 5yo & she has pouted about it and dug her heels in but she has had no choice. When she turns 5 I hope to be able to back off a little & let her make choices and learn from her experiences, especially when out; the way her body reacts to things etc. I know initially she will go bread, bread, bread and bread & I am expecting it to be tough on both her and us with the tears etc. What I don't know is how to do thios constructively. How do I encourage her to make the right choices but not get cross as and when she doesn't? How do I then help her to link the reaction of her body with what she has eaten?

    ...for weight loss

Thank you everyone, your responses have made me see some sense. 6.5lb is a good start, not where I want to be but this is a marathon not a sprint. I want to lose it and keep it off. This month is difficult as I have a few events and my birthday so I am not committing to another 30days but am committing to eating W30 style outside of these events. My sleep has been great, though I may say excessive, that is one of the reasons that I've not done more exercise. I am just so exhausted after a full day with 2 children that I generally want to eat then bed. One day I'm sorry to say that I put the children to bed, skipped dinner and went to bed myself at 7:45. I didn't have the energy to even do myself a boiled egg. Most days I'm even mnaging a half hour nap so I wouldn't say my energy levels have increased any. The exhaustion levels are a little worrying

    ...for weight loss

Okay, here's the thing. I started paleo about 18months ago following my 2nd pregnancy and I feel 100% better all round. I have completed my 2nd W30 and didn't have to make drastic changes as I was used to the 3 meal planning etc. However... Part of my reason for doing my 2nd W30, besides altering my relationship with food, was to lose weight which I had all but shifted, then got ahead of myself, ate far too much sugar and put it all back on :-( I had a whopping 28lb to lose and thought that initially it would fall away quite quickly (1st W30 I shed 10lb) but I lost 6.5lb, still a loss but no were near enough. This is baby weight so it's not like I don't need to lose it at 160lb. I need help, I have not weighed or measured the food I have been eating and eaten until I am full 3 times a day but am thinking that maybe I got the portion sizes wrong, e.g. Today Breakfast; diced chicken thigh with spinach and red pepper and 2 scrambled eggs all cooked in coconut oil Lunch; left over salmon fishcake & turkey burger heated through with coconut oil (our dinner and children's dinner yesterday), a boiled egg and half a plate of salad(lettuce, tomato, cucumber, radish, pepper, celery, avocado mixed in 2tbsp olive oil and 1tbsp balsamic vinegar) Too much fat? Protein? I haven't done a massive amout of exercise but I've done 1 aerobics seesion a week, 2/3 weights sessions (reasonably light weights as I'm a newbie) and a few chillout mediation sessions. Please help me as the more frustrated I get with my weight (I know, focus on health not weight but it's difficult when I've so much to lose) the more I'm inclined to do a radical weight loss program instead of one that gets my biochemistry right. Please help and sorry for the long post. Thanks Jenni

    kids breakfast

Hi there, My girls are being extremely faddy at the moment and pretty much refusing everything. They aren't doing a whole 30 but I am but we have eaten paleo as a family for about 18months. Suddenly they are refusing everything, especially breakfast and I'm at a loss of what to do. Typical breakfast is chicken, veg and an egg on top. We would vary this with various spices, maybe port instead of chicken and vary the veg. Sometimes it will be an omelette if we are in a rush. At a w/e when there is more time we will give them palro pancakes which they devour. My husband is getting fed up of wasting good food as it ends up in the bin or the dog. Any ideas on what to do or even kid friendly meal ideas. It is important for timescales that we aren't prepping different meals for each person. Any ideas would be great. Thankyou. Jenni

    Worcestershire Sauce

Just to let you know that fish sauce instead of worcestershire sauce was excellent!

    Worcestershire Sauce

Ooooh that's an idea, and cheaper as I already have some. Bonus!

    What am I doing?

For about 6-8weeks my 4yo has been up every single morning at 6am for a poo (TMI I know!) She doesn't have confidence yet in wiping herself so shouts for me or Daddy which wakes us and her little sister. It is driving us crazy. She also complains that she is always hungry and I don't know what more to give her that will fill her up and sustain her. Average daily food 7:30am veggie omelette, sometimes with extra pork tenderloin or chicken thigh on the way to school a handful of almonds and a brazil nut 9:30-10 a peice of fruit at school 12ish a school lunch (they are very good and cater for our requirements) 2pm a snack that I send her to school with, a Lara bar or an egg or seeds etc 5pm dinner at home; meatballs and veggies or 2 chicken thighs and veggies She will then complain before 7 (bedtime) that she is hungry and then despite going to the loo before bed, is still up at 6am going to the bathroom and will basically refuse to go back to sleep so sings in her room for an hour which also keeps the rest of the house awake. DDoes anyone have any idea how I can tweak her diet that will avoid the early morning poo call?
