Anyone have advice on learning to run?

Hey ThyPeace, I think it was this thread that inspired me to even consider running. You mentioned the couch to 5k app and that sounded like a feasible challenge to me. So I researched the heck out of it, found the podcast I mentioned above. Listened to her talk about how to stay away from injury and fall in love with running. I'm a teacher and I think her teaching-passion really won me over. So. I'm about to go out on my Week4Day1 run on the C25K app. My goal is the "oldest 5k in MoCo", the Rockville 5k in early November. Just wanted to tell you that you're a small part of my running journey. Cheers! oh and I love the exercises and stretches on the link below. I laminated (with tape) a copy, and rubber band it to my phone when I go walking and running. http://www.beginnerrunnervillage.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Prepare-Your-Body-to-Run.pdf

Re: strengthening for runs: http://www.beginnerrunnervillage.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Prepare-Your-Body-to-Run.pdf The author has a great podcast called Beginner Runner Village by Debbie Voiles https://itun.es/us/GZDtQ.c She's generous with her running expertise and really wants newbies to love running for life. Like what you said in your original post about running at 100. I'm gaining interest and haven't started yet. Oh, and I'm upcounty from you in MoCo.
  3. Well, the reasons you all mentioned are the exact reasons I was hoping to find some fellow pregnant ladies giving this a shot. Because pregnancy has a slew of emotional and food turmoil, (among other turmoil) and wouldn't it be great to be support for each other. So here I am to tell you what you already know but hopefully hearing somebody else say it will encourage you even a smidge. bonus if it encourages you more than that. @lbosmer, so sorry to hear day one was so bad. And you're even past 2st trimester... what are your goals moving forward? are you going to try to really do a whole30 all the way? its kinda a rough program since its all or nothing, in a sense. which is why I'm considering a modified version, personally. Of course I wont get the full benefits in all of their glory, I know, I know. But I might hold on to my sanity and hope to not fall into traps of giving myself too much lee-way. geesh. @Ordinarily, Wow, you're brave to do this during 1st trimester. Let us know what you find that works, and what even sounds good to you...I can relate on the binging. i did ok my first pregnancy but this time around I already gained 10 in my first trimester. maybe this means its a boy this time? (which we'd love!) but I keep beating myself up over how many cookies and crackers and bread Ive eaten after really getting them out of my life this past summer. @Kelzie, 36 weeks? you're so close to holding that little one! Great work backing off of bad stuff this past month. Kudos especially for doing that during the holidays. And for even getting back on board. @MrsK, Rock on with your bad self. you appear to be a pro.
  4. I'm 14 weeks and in need of a reset. Any pregnant ladies out there considering one, too? It would be nice to share the journey with somebody? Connie

    When will I be back?

Thanks for bringing this up. I haven't been devoted nearly as long as you but have been eating non stop and eating all sorts of bread and sweets because they sound so good. Im 14 weeks now, so I think I can stomach real food now. I'm hoping to transisition back slowly into more veg, and switch back to sweet potatoes as my main carb. I'm guessing that I'm giving in too much to the sugar dragon and using my tiredness as an excuse, as in I'm just being lazy. Would love to hear an update or what's working for you? Connie
  6. Can somebody school me in the ways of Sauerkraut? Specifically, does quality vary from one place to the next? I saw a bag of it in my normal grocery meat case. What should I be looking for re: best quality? What other fermented foods should I try and same question, how do I tell quality on them, too? (obviously compliance, but anything else?)

    Corn reactions

I'm surprised we haven't heard more about this. Is it the GMO factor? or is corn just bad? yikes.

    Corn reactions

Yep, may be a cultural thing. I grew up in Mexican family in Texas where we ate lots of corn, tortilla chips, and corn tortillas. Like several times a week. I sorta miss them. But seeing my reaction to them keeps me away. I'd like to try Popcorn, too but doubt will go over well. @RVing pilfrim & @angelajl: So corn syrup bothers you too? like anything labeled "high fructose corn syrup"? Can you tell me specifically what kinds of products you especially have to stay away from? I know its prolific, but what in particular were you surprised about?

    Corn reactions

Has anybody else had strong reactions to corn? Yesterday was my non-gluten grain evaluation day. I had tortilla chips with guac from Chipotle with lunch. And corn on the cob with ghee with dinner. After lunch I had a headache and tummy pain. After dinner I had a slight headache and later different tummy pain when trying to sleep. Then most of today I've had a slight headache. I was surprised by it. Any ideas?

    July Group - Reintro

My Dairy Evaluation Day Today the research begins! I've chosen to go along pretty closely to what they recommend for Reintroduction. 1: Leftover fritatta w ground turkey and veg, 3 dates w almond butter (treat!), some cherries, and chobani vanilla greek yogurt, pecan pieces + felt heavy after this meal. but ok. I could take or leave yogurt. 2: turkey rolls, mini sweet peppers, carrots, green olives, caprese salad with fresh Mozzarella cheese + the cheese was so creamy and lovely. But I slowed into a foggy state. turning into a gross headache. throat feels funny, like I've been congested, kind of burning feeling. oh boy. headache worsened later on and heart burn, too. 3: 2 ckn thighs, squash, sw potato, green olives. free small cup of Bruster's choc chip ice cream. + heart was still burning from lunch. Ice Cream tasted really amazing and creamy. after I ate it my mouth felt like it was burning. flemmy throat. low grade headache and more heartburn. Oy. Pity.

July 1 Start Date - Who's with Me?!

The Results are in. Clothes fit better! Before/After photo have a noticeable difference in my waist. Met one of my goals! Lost 4-8 pounds. (weighed a couple times on day 0) Skin is “brighter Shiny in a non-greasy way. Not entirely cleared up but getting better. I knew going in to this that it takes more than 30 days to get dairy and gluten entirely out of your system. But encouraged by the results. More confident. Sounds funny to me, but I think it's a combo of the increase in energy and knowing that I'm doing good for my body. This has resulted in wearing pre-baby clothes for my husband around the house. Fun. This was my first whole30. There are several things I could do better at. But I wasn't even sure I could do it beforehand. Now that I'm over that, the next time through I'll have different goals (water intake, sleep, exercise) and more variety for my meals. And in between now and the next time, I plan to mostly eat this way. Thanks for all of the support, and congrats on your results, too. Even small gains are pretty great. This is our health we're talking about.

Idea: if we want to follow Tom's suggestion, we could do a July Sugar Reintro, July Dairy Reintro, July gluten reintro, etc. thoughts?

    July Group - Reintro

My re-intro plans for Day31 Dairy: yogurt at breakfast (want this the least, just trying to get full benefit of full dairy evaluation. maybe I should rethink and slather butter on something? heh.) Caprese Salad: Mozz cheese w fresh basil + tomato _ olive oil Brewsters Ice Cream after dinner

July 1 Start Date - Who's with Me?!

I'm already thinking about how I would do this better next time. For my next Whole30 I will focus on: getting regular sleep drinking more water daily consistent exercise It's tempting to be a downer and think of how much better I could have done this time through. But it's my first whole30. i learned plenty and surprised myself that I could get through it and make so many changes. And I'd love to experience the magic so maybe a whole100 is in order. hmm.

July 1 Start Date - Who's with Me?!

@Freylah, love your icing story! Great job with that! My toddler is constantly trying to get me to eat her food. I love that she's learning to share (slowly) but I usually make a munching pretend noise and she giggles. @mrsR I agree with others that your outlook is helpful. Thanks for shooting straight. I'm more nervous about hidden oils or small mistakes I've made that didn't allow my body to get full benefit. The scallop w butter and 4 grains of rice... Did they keep my body from really getting full benefit? The dates... Was it too much sugar? I'm not seeing drastic changes. Wish I had measured. Hopefully my before and after photos will help me see change. Maybe my skin will clear up on day 29? Sigh.
