I understand why everyone says no snacks...but as a fellow nurse, I have to think that for us (and perhaps for other professions) this may just be unrealistic. I'm also a nurse, and I work 12 hours shifts that usually stretch at least to 13. I pack all my food for the day. I eat breakfast before I clock in at 7am. Lunch is never...never never ever before noon, and usually around 1 or 1:30 (and some days, none at all, or not until 4). That's a long time to be on your feet without eating anything. So a quick snack, like a compliant larabar or apple slices with almond butter, or a handful of almonds, might literally be what is holding me together until I have time to sit down and actually eat a meal. We can't all get to the template every single time. Is it not better to eat a snack of compliant ingredients than to get so hungry, you blow the Whole30? Sorry for highjacking!

    Lara Bars

I include compliant larabars in my Whole30. And *for me*, I'm fine. It doesn't set off the sugar dragon (for me!). And as a nurse, a larabar has saved me more than once. We don't always get a chance to sit down and eat that wonderfully compliant meal that you packed last night! For me, hard boiled eggs and larabars keep me going until I can eat that meal. As many have mentioned though, they aren't all compliant. Check the ingredients. Funny, I'm also a tennis player and ALWAYS have larabars in my bag.

Hi y'all! I'm sad to say I have to start over, but I'm ok with that. I played in a tennis tournament this weekend, and just could not physically keep going without having *something* off plan. There are only so many bananas a person can eat. So, I'm in my final tomorrow (whoo hoo!), lost in the semis in another draw today. So finally only one match tomorrow (after two days of two or three matches in the heat and humidity). Tuesday I'll get back on the wagon! *thumbs up*
  5. Well, I got floated to another unit yesterday, so I wasn't tempted by the beautiful giant loaf of banana bread (haha...NOT). I did notice when I went back to our break room to eat my lunch, that the banana bread was completely gone. Whew. My coworkers saved me from myself! It is getting easier to say no to the sweets, and for me that is HUGE. My sleep isn't consistent, so I bet if I dialed that in, my waxing and waning would even out too.
  6. Kerith, I started Aug 12, so I'm almost halfway!!! One day with a bad headache, but other than that, the biggest thing I'm struggling with is just fatigue. I'll have bouts of 'tiger blood', but it doesn't last...at least not yet. Just finished another cookup in preparation of my 3 days today...every Monday our manager buys us 'treats'...so at least I'm ready and prepared!!!
  7. Kerith, I'm a newbie nurse, usually days so far, and on my very first day of my Whole30, there was a huge, delicious looking chocolate cake in the break room! ARGH! And one of my dear patients gave me a cookie from Not Your Sugar Mommas...I took it, but wrapped it up and stuck it in the freezer! Cookies are my weakness!!! I switched to nursing from teaching, and it was the same temptations there...always treats in the staff room. So far so good, but it is so much harder on the night shift! On day shift, if I have to, I know I can go down to the cafeteria and get something compliant from the salad bar. No other options on night shift (well, other than the vending machines, and they aren't an option!). Good for you being so strong!

Ok, went for a slow run, but made the whole 5k loop around where I live. Hmmm, maybe a bit Tiger-Bloodish? I do enjoy working out and not feeling totally ravenous afterward. Forgot to mention I picked up some Tessamae's dressing, my first time trying any of it. I got Lemon Garlic, and just tossed it with some tuna, zucchini noodles, onions, and bell peppers with seasonings. Very tasty!

LIttle low on energy again today, but I know I am low on sleep. I plan to get to bed on the early side tonight. For working out, I have some bodyweight AMRAPS (20 min) that I rotate around, a few DVDs I like to do (mainly HIIT stuff and weights, though I gotta say, I love step), I do hill sprints every so often, and I play tennis. I try to workout when I have the day off, which gives me 3-4 workouts per week. With how active I am at work, I feel like that is plenty. Trying to decide what to do now actually...I'd like to get outside, but its rainy. Thinking maybe some weight work inside is what is more likely to happen. Browsed around Whole Foods today, mostly just to see what they have that I can't get at Trader Joe's. Nice selection of meats...I didn't buy anything because I would be walking around with it for awhile, but I have it on my list to go soon and pick up and stock up on some meat! I did pick up some Larabars, and actually found myself putting one flavor back because I know, from having it before, that it is super sweet. Hunh. That never would have been an issue for me before! I grabbed some lunch at the salad bar, and loved the fact that they list ingredients for all the things they have on there...but disappointed by how few things on there are Whole30 compliant. Sugar pops up in so many forms, and soy is everywhere!

I'm finally not working today, and feeling VERY hungry and tired. Contemplating a nap at the moment. But overall, my mood is still improved, just feeling quite low on energy.

@bstombaugh, are you getting ready to go back to school...you have one more year, right?

No problem...I think I am 'lucky' in a way that I constantly get reminded of that perspective! Its funny, I thought I would have very specific sugar (sweets) cravings, but mine are more carby in general! Did that even make any sense? Haha! I wonder if I was taking in more carbs than I realized before? If nothing else, this program really gets you thinking!

Something to keep in mind...those other people may be 'just fine' now, but our bad diets do catch up with us. It hit me hard when, during my first clinical rotation in my last year of nursing school, my assigned patient was 450 lbs., and, of course, diabetic. She had already lost one toe, and was about to lose a foot. And her kidneys were starting to fail. She had already had one open heart surgery. She was...52. 52!!! And now that I've started in ICU, so many of the people we see (we aren't a trauma center, so no car accidents or things like that) are sick with things that are the result of many, many years of not taking care of themselves. Diabetes is rampant, and we always have COPD patients (most with histories of smoking). And not all patients who have diabetic complications are overweight! One patient was a man in his 50s, tall and lean *looking*, and he was having his lower leg amputated due to gangrene...the poor circulation was due to years of uncontrolled diabetes and high blood glucose levels. You are making an investment in yourself so that you will not be one of those people who spend so much time not living and literally disabled by their acquired conditions. And a good amount of these patients just really had no idea what they were doing was harmful (well, except for the smokers!, but addiction to anything isn't easy to stop)...one patient literally told me her high blood glucose level was due to the steroids she was taking (which were given because of her COPD, she was STILL smoking)...and then she argued with the doctor to take her off the 'diabetic' diet because she couldn't eat anything. smh And then she ordered carbs and sugar. Ok, this kind of turned into a longer rant than I meant...but the takeaway, we need to remember that what we see on the outside is not necessarily an indicator of health, and that what we do know *matters* so much in later years!

HI everyone, I'm still here, too! My cravings last night were more just...easy, quick food, mostly carbs. Not specifically sugar I think. Which is still really flooring me, because I used to eat something sweet every day. I thought I 'needed' it. But now, perhaps not so much! Amazing to see how much is mental when considering our relationships with food. So far, yes, I've also noticed clearer skin. I actually noticed that improving even when I was 'practicing' with some W30 meals earlier. I'm 30. At work the other day, someone said she thought I was still in my 20s!!! Yay!!! (she's know my BFF forever, haha!) As far as energy, it is hard for me to tell. But I did have two pretty rough 12+ hour shifts in a row, and I'm feeling...ok. Not necessarily Tiger Blood, but I'm also not wrecked like I have been sometimes, and I feel like I have the energy today to do what I want! It is a lot of work, but still making and packing all my food for work days, and yesterday I didn't snack! (Amberino is cheering somewhere!) I ate my breakfast when I got to work (around 6:45am), then had my lunch around 1:30pm, and didn't feel the urge to eat a small mountain of food when I left (late, at 8pm). But when I got home and started eating, that's when the cravings hit. I wish I could just not eat when I get home, and maybe I'll try that one day, but then I feel like I won't have enough in the tank if I have to work the next day. So, I need to try it when I have the next day off. Just packing my food and not going down to the cafeteria where temptation lies helps a lot I think. I also get to enjoy and relax for more time during my short break, because I'm not wasting it in line at the cafeteria. Thank goodness they aren't open when I'm leaving, and my resolve is at its weakest! Now, I didn't weigh myself before this started. I know the number wasn't something I wanted to see, so I just didn't do it. I was weighed during my physical this summer, so I know my ballpark. But the bellybloat and gas are definitely reduced. *thumbs up*

Ohhhh, I'm having a hard time with cravings today, too. I'm so hungry after my day (a VERY hectic day in the ICU) and I ate all my prepared stuff already. ARGH.
