Prenatal Vitamins with DHA - Yes, No, or It doesn’t matter?

Recommended Posts

Hi:

I am 33, and I am trying to get pregnant. I am starting my Whole30 July 1st. I have been talking prenatal vitamins for about 3 months now but they contain sugar and that is definitely not compliant(these are the one I am taking ( http://www.cvs.com/shop/vitamins/health-goals/fertility-prenatal-care/cvs-prenatal-gummy-vitamins-with-dha-folic-acid-gummies-skuid-889924 ) - I searched the forum and I found out that Melissa recommends Nutrient 950® with Vitamin K( http://www.pureencapsulations.com/nutrient-950-with-vitamin-k.html) and I am ready to buy them but I just noticed those does not contain DHA (Docosahexaenic Acid). I was told once by my previous Dr. that DHA would help with the baby’s brain so now I don’t know which one to take. Help… J

Thank you!

Hi Silvia!

I was taking a chewable prenatal bc huge "horse" pills (as prenatals often are) were not an option for me.  There is a trace amount of sugar in the ones I was taking- these:

I am on Day14 of my Whole30 and for me, and this is my personal choice, the importance of a good prenatal vitamin I could chew up trumped the minute amount of sugar I was consuming- it was on par with what I would have in my kombucha (yes I get that those are natural sugars).  So I made my peace with this.  You know how the Whole30 book says God > Whole30 in terms of taking communion (for those that do)?  That's the same as this for me.

Now, I have been taking these:

They are great, small and easy to swallow- you just have to take 3 over the course of the day, doesn't even have to be all at once.

Regarding the DHA, a lot of prenatals actually don't contain it unless specifically indicated.  As mine didn't my doc had me get some, I am using these:

Small-ish, easy to swallow, no funny tasting burps  ;)   I understand this to be vital, especially in early development, for brain and also vision in the growing baby.  It's also said to help chill the Mamma out as well, and who doesn't need that?

Sounds like you may have found a good CVS brand.  I am not sure how concerned you are about sugar but if having the chewable is a dealbreaker for you I guess just try to find the lowest amount?  Rainbow Light is a really great brand and very safe.  I ADORE CVS and spend a ton of time there but to be honest, and this is just me, for something like a prenatal I chose to go with the highest quality/best reviewed I could find.  For certain OTC items, I just don't always trust the generics.  I do tend to be a little Type A though....

Hope this helps and I am SURE you will find the right vits/supplements for you!  You are already ahead of the game starting this while TTC- way to go!!  I take my vits in the morning and am actually also adding an extra folic acid at night bc I understand you can't have enough of it and I am advanced maternal age.  Whatever that means these days!!

Be well and hope to see you around!
