    Accountability partners for January 1st 2018

    Hey everyone! This is my first forum post this time around (2nd Whole 30). Started on 1/1 after a VERY glutenous December, and have been cruising along more easily than expected. Happy Day 16 people! I've been cooking about three meals a week from the Whole 30 Fast & Easy cookbook, and I am loving these recipes. Only one so far that's not a keeper. My favs, in order of my personal ratings: p.77 Almond-Crusted Pork Picatta with Zucchini Noodles (delicious and totally company/guest-worthy!) p.47 Ginger Shrimp and Zucchini Stir-Fry p.145 Apricot-Lamb Loaves With Roasted Cauliflower p.57 Spanish Chicken and Cauliflower (one of those dishes that's better the next day, though still good the day of) p.81 Zucchini Basil Chicken Hash p.8 Cashew-Crusted Chicken and Wilted Kale Salad (chicken was tasty, but was not a fan of the kale salad - probably won't make this one again, other than the chicken) Next up this week are turkey meatballs (p.115) and sheet pan roasted sausage/potato/cabbage (p.139). Definitely adding sheet pan broccoli and shrimp to my list after Shelley's review! I'm having a lot of fun cooking again. Used to love it, but the kitchen at my last house was cramped and kind of horrible to be in, so I cooked as little as possible. We moved last month, and Whole 30 is a great way to break in the new kitchen!

    @scottsp64 - sounds like you are making awesome progress! Congrats! Yeah, Orange Roughy is not cheap fish, but it also doesn't taste like cheap fish. Glad you like it. I don't eat it on a regular basis, partly because of the cost, but I always have a pack or two in my freezer in case I find myself without a compliant protein ready to go. I miss sugary, creamy coffee, as well. I will probably indulge on occasion when I'm done, but I will have to keep a close eye on it to make sure I'm not reverting to an unhealthy relationship with creamer. STAY OFF THE SCALE!!!

    Day 30 for me, too! So many NSVs, and feeling really confident about reintroductions. The holiday season scares me a bit, but I will have many opportunities to practice mindfulness when deciding what to eat. I know food freedom will be a constant work in progress, but I'm looking forward to it! Also looking forward to wine this weekend

    Yes, your numbers can improve

    Amazing results! Congrats! I have always had trouble trying to "reform" my eating and exercise habits at the same time. Too much effort all at once, I guess. This time around, I focused on getting back into a running habit first (started in July, and it took three months to really become routine), and then tackled the Whole30 this month. Sounds like you're in an awesome groove with your eating habits! Perfect time to add some extra movement to your life I would say start small and build from there. Good luck!

    NSV's but little weight loss

    Here's the thing about the scale - for those of us who want to lose weight (and I am definitely in that group), the point of losing weight is to be healthy, to look good, to improve at our sport of choice, etc. I will be completely honest and say that looking good/fitting into smaller clothes is my biggest goal, followed by improved runnning, and then by health (I know the order of importance should be reversed). The number on the scale is just one indicator of the progress we've made. If you're fitting into your smaller jeans, THAT should mean a hell of a lot more than what the scale tells you. We've all just been so conditioned to put the scale on a pedestal and ignore every other indication of improved health that our body is throwing at us. I know this will be a struggle for me, too, when I finally step on the scale after my Whole30 next Friday. If it shows a small loss, I will be bummed, but I am committed to teaching myself not to care about the scale anymore. I am going to pay way more attention to everything else my body is telling me. I love this program, and I think if we follow it, do the reintros, and live a life of Food Freedom, our bodies will eventually find a healthy ideal as far as body weight (and everything else) goes.

    Kitchen gadgets

    I have a spiralizer that's kinda like this one, though mine didn't come with the extra tools. $10 bucks sounds pretty good to me! I also ditched my mandolin for noodles and switched to the spiralizer. So much easier! The immersion blenders are a little more pricey, but it looks like you can get one for around $30 on Amazon. I think mine is a Cuisinart, and it's been going strong for at least five years.

    Do you have access to the Whole30 book? There's a whole section in there for Vegetarians, which I can only assume gives guidance for protein without meat (I didn't actually read that section). There's also a section in the forum for vegetarians/vegans - I would skim through those topics and read the ones that discuss protein.

    I had my first food dream last night! I was happily shoveling Triscuits and cheese into my mouth (one of my old go-to binge-worthy snacks), when I realized with horror that I would have to start my Whole30 all over again. Big wave of relief when I woke up and realized it was a dream How's everyone doing on Day 25 (23 for me)? Almost to the finish line! Though there isn't really supposed to be a finish line, so maybe I should say, almost done with Phase 1!

    Started this past Sunday, October 23rd

    Some thoughts: My favorite tea is white tea - none of the bitterness of black, though also not as much caffeine Made ghee for the first time this weekend using the recipe from Whole30 - so easy! And kinda fun My fav frozen fish is orange roughy. Throw it frozen in the over at 425 for 15 to 20 minutes. So buttery and delicious (I brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and dried dill before cooking). My local grocery store sells it in the frozen fish section, but not sure how easy it is to find elsewhere (one of my two local grocery stores does NOT carry it). I did have to run to my freezer just now to make sure it was compliant! Didn't even think to look at labels for simple frozen meat. I don't have kids, but I do have a husband who is not doing this with me. There is non-compliant stuff throughout my kitchen, and not at all sequestered. My two cents is this - with a "diet" plan that is very strict like the Whole30, it can be easier on your brain not to be tempted by off-plan foods since there's no decision-making that needs to happen. For example, if you're doing some kind of generic diet, it's easy to be tempted by off-plan treats because your brain tells you that you can just get back on the diet tomorrow, no harm no foul. But on the Whole30, you're committed to 30 days with no cheats, period, so there's really no room to talk yourself into non-compliant foods without having to start over. I know I'm not explaining this very well, but Melissa does talk about it in one of the books. I am a straight-out junk-food-aholic, but I was shocked to find that there was absolutely no temptation for me to eat any of the goodies in the house. In any case, I would weigh the consequences of possible added stress from rebelling kids vs the extra will-power to say no to non-compliant foods in your house. The former may be harder to deal with than the latter...

    Meal preps

    I made a huge batch of mashed sweet potatoes for the week on Sunday, and realized yesterday that I would not make it through the whole batch by the end of the week. Decided to put half in the freezer. No idea if it will still taste good once I defrost it, but we shall see... I'm happy to see that the consensus is five days - I thought it would be less.

    I was going to say the same thing that Laura posted - I don't really care for fruit, except every once in a while, so I asked the forum if I should force myself to have some every day to comply with the meal template. The answer was "no."

    October 3rd start

    Hope your headaches go away soon! I think just posing the question here about reintroductions helped me work through my own thoughts. I know reintroduction is a crucial part of the program, and the only time you can do it correctly is after a reset. Looking at my calendar, the time between my San Fran trip and Thanksgiving is the longest stretch I'll have without major holidays/events going on until January 15th. I don't want to wait that long to do another reset! I also want to have the knowledge from my reintroduction to make informed decisions about what food is "worth it" during all the events coming up. That being said, I think I'll just reintroduce after this Whole30, and think about doing another one starting January 16th. Reintros will hopefully look like this: Days 32 to 33 - Reintroduce alcohol, keeping everything else Whole30 compliant ( yes, I know it should only be one day, but I don't care! My best friend + San Fran is worth it) Days 34 to 36 - back to Whole30 Day 37 - Reintroduce non-gluten grains Days 38 to 40 - back to Whole30 Day 41 - reintroduce cheese Days 42 to 44 - back to Whole30 Day 45 - reintroduce gluten-containing grains Days 46 to 50 - back to Whole30 Day 51 - Turkey Day! I'm not interested in legumes, or any dairy other than cheese, and this schedule gives me some wiggle room in case I need to take a few extra days in between reintros. I may take a day later on to see if I can handle hummus and soy sauce (the only form of legumes that I might like to add back in). After that, I will most likely stick to the Whole30 in between the holiday parties and trips. We'll see how it goes!

    October 3rd start

    Three weeks down! How's everyone doing? My energy levels have slumped a bit over the last week - more of an overall lazy feeling than a crawl-under-the-covers feeling, but definitely a move in the wrong direction. I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is, though: not enough food, and especially not enough vegetables. I have not eaten three full meals since Thursday, so I definitely need to work on that this week. This weekend I made the salmon cakes from Well Fed 2 - YUM! Looking forward to popping those babies out of the freezer for future meals. It's funny, though - the recipe calls for Old Bay seasoning, and I couldn't find it at either of the grocery stores I went to. I was a little shocked. Maybe it's just more of a staple on the East Coast where I grew up than it is here in AZ? I ended up buying a random seafood spice mix, and it worked out just fine. I'm having a dilemma about what to do after 30 days. I know I will be off-roading on a trip to San Fran on day 31, but hope to keep my food Whole30 and just indulge in alcohol. I do feel like I'm going to need more than 30 days to fully heal/reset, so I'm thinking about going back to strict Whole30 after the trip. The problem is, with Thanksgiving only a few weeks after that, I kinda want to get some reintroductions out of the way so that I can make informed decisions about what non-Whole30 foods to indulge in on Turkey day. The other option is to Whole30 all the way until Thanksgiving, eat whatever looks too good to pass up (my uncle is an AMAZING cook, and I'm so excited to be able to spend Thanksgiving at their house), then go back to Whole30 the next day. I'm sure I'll pay for it, and I won't know which foods caused the negative consequences, but I just don't know which option is better. Decisions decisions...
  17. Just wanted to chime in and say that I enjoy reading your posts here I "used" to be a runner, and am trying to claw my way back into it. I've never been fast - my last and best marathon was at a 9:45ish pace I think (waaaay back in 2005) and I was usually happy to complete any run in under 10:30 minute miles - and right now my pace outside is typically around 12:30, never going more than 3 miles. I'm also 40 lbs heavier than I was 11 years ago, so I know if I can tackle the weight, things will get easier. Regarding your app miscalculating your distances - don't let it get you down! I know it seriously sucks, but regardless you are still making progress in your running! I'm a nerd for running stats/graphs/data, so I always run with my Garmin watch. Used to have the expensive - and awesome - Forerunner, but now I run with the Garmin Vivoactive ($150 on Amazon). It can't do as much as the fancier watches, but it's very accurate with distance and pace, which is what I care about. Keep up the awesome work!

    So tired of eggs

    I like to make this recipe, and freeze individual servings. It still has eggs, of course, but it's not boring! I'm a big fan of frozen breakfasts (or leftovers) since there is no way I'd have the motivation to cook on weekday mornings.
  19. My husband is a REALLY bad snorer, and has been since I met him 11 years ago. He got a CPAP last year, and it works like a charm (when he doesn't rip it off his face in the middle of the night). Ear plugs - the regular old orange ones - actually worked really well for me most nights. There were a lot of nights where the volume was too much for the plugs, and I ended up in the guest room, but for the most part they did do the trick, and I never had a problem with missing my alarm.

    If/Then Help Needed

    IF I find myself craving junk when I'm bored and/or watching TV, THEN I will knit/paint/go for a walk/[insert other distracting activity here] until the craving goes away. That's the only one I've come up with so far for myself. The new book, Food Freedom Forever, dives into IF/THEN and other strategies in depth - I highly recommend it! Still in my Whole30 at the moment, but I've read through the book, and think it will be a big help once I enter the next phase.

    I love my Well Fed 2, and I haven't even cooked from it yet. It's just such a beautifully put-together cookbook! Will definitely be perusing it at length this week to get inspiration for my weekend cook-up. I'm a bit behind most as I'm on Day 14, but man-oh-man are the NSVs piling up! Energy is on the rise, clothes are looser, skin is getting better, mood is awesome, no cravings, and my run this morning was better than ever. The whole popping-out-of-bed-bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed thing still needs some work, but is seems to be getting easier. Let's have an awesome second half of our Whole30!

I am a little late to the party with meal planning! Gotta get it done today. I decided to buy Well Fed 2 (already have the first book), and it's coming today. I love Amazon prime one-day delivery...

    Best coffee creamers

    I am a pretty heavy coffee & cream drinker, but as @jmcbn said, I've discovered that coffee is just a way to shovel loads of flavored creamer into my mouth. During my first whole 30 waaaaay back in April 2015, I tried coconut milk and other ways to fancy up my coffee, but none of it worked. This time around, I just switched to tea. Turns out I actually like the taste of plain old tea - much better than black coffee!

    @4windsrider - My guess is that the coconut milk will not make it through security. Not sure about the chia squeeze, though, I guess it depends on how "liquidy" it is?
